Record-breaking Wallaby James Slipper makes call on Super Rugby future

Record-breaking front-rower James Slipper is returning for another season with the ACT Brumbies, with the all-time Wallabies and Super Rugby appearance leader signing on for the 2027 campaign.

Slipper is the most-capped player in Super Rugby history, going clear of the long-held tally held by former Crusaders prop Wyatt Crockett. ‘Slips’ also stands alone as the all-time appearance leader for the Wallabies, having played 154 Tests in gold.

The 36-year-old had initially retired from Wallabies duty after the second Bledisloe Cup Test against the All Blacks last October, before returning to the national team’s setup for the Nations Championship matches in July.

Slipper was called into the Wallabies by then coach Joe Schmidt after a strong season for the Brums, having played just shy of 700 minutes, making 112 tackles, beating a handful of defenders and running for 85 metres.

The Brumbies shocked 2025 champions the Crusaders in Christchurch during the early rounds of the fresh campaign, with Slipper crossing for a try in what was also his 200^th competition game, before going on to break the appearance record soon after.

“I still love coming in every day and competing with this group. We’ve built something really special at the Brumbies, and I still get a lot of enjoyment out of being part of it,” Slipper said.

“The body still feels good, I’m enjoying my footy and I feel like I’ve still got plenty to contribute, both on the field and around the group. As long as that’s the case, I’m excited to keep pulling on the Brumbies jersey.

“We’ve got a great coaching staff, a playing group that’s hungry to keep improving and I genuinely believe we’ve got what it takes to compete for championships over the next few years. That’s something I want to be a part of.”

Slipper debuted at Super Rugby level for the Queensland Reds in 2010, going on to become a club centurion before eventually heading south. The front-rower joined the Brums ahead of the 2019 season, suiting up on club debut on February 15.

Fast-forward to last season and Slipper started in all 14 appearances, which led to higher honours with the Wallabies. Slipper hasn’t closed the door on playing more Tests, but is for now focused on what lies ahead in the capital.

“Slips is still playing outstanding rugby. He was one of our most consistent performers throughout 2026 and he’s shown he can continue to make a big impact for this team,” Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham added.

“What he brings away from game day is just as important. He’s an exceptional leader, he drives standards every day and the knowledge he passes on to our younger players is invaluable.

“Our players, members and fans love what Slips represents. He’s become synonymous with the Brumbies through his toughness and consistency, and we’re excited they’ll get to see him pull on the jersey for another season.”
