Griquas crowned back-to-back Currie Cup champions after tense final

Griquas have retained the Currie Cup after overcoming the Pumas 23-16 in a tense final in Kimberley, with veteran fly-half George Whitehead marking his 150th appearance with a decisive display.

The hosts controlled much of the opening quarter and were first on the board through Whitehead, only for the Pumas to strike against the run of play. JC Nell produced the intercept before Darren Adonis finished the move, with Clinton Swart converting for a 7-3 lead.

Griquas responded through Mnombo Zwelendaba after sustained pressure from their forwards, Whitehead adding the conversion to restore the advantage. Swart then landed two penalties to send the Pumas into the break 13-10 ahead, while Griquas were left regretting two opportunities that went begging over the try line.

The second half remained just as tight. Whitehead levelled the scores from the tee before landing a huge penalty from inside his own half to put Griquas 16-13 ahead. Swart responded almost immediately, leaving the final locked at 16-16 heading into the closing stages.

Whitehead then produced one of the defining moments of the contest, finding a 50:22 with seven minutes remaining to give Griquas an attacking platform deep inside Pumas territory.

The hosts made it count. Their forwards set the maul, absorbed the resistance and eventually powered over for the match-winning score through replacement hooker Janco Uys, with the conversion opening up a seven-point advantage.

The Pumas were handed one final opportunity after stealing a late lineout, but a loose pass sailed into touch to bring the contest to an end.

Whitehead was named Player of the Match after steering Griquas through the decisive moments, completing a memorable 150th outing as the Peacock Blues secured a second successive Currie Cup title.

“This is what I wanted for Kimberley – a home final. I get emotional,” Griquas head coach Pieter Bergh said.

“To see the stadium like this, and the people come to support us, this is all I dreamed of. This is amazing.”
