Griquas

Griquas, known as Tafel Lager Griquas for sponsorship reasons, is a professional rugby team in South Africa that competes in the annual Currie Cup competition. The team is nicknamed the 'Peacock Blues'.

Read on to discover more about Griquas, including the team's history and an analysis of their current squad. On this page, you'll also find all of the team's latest results and upcoming fixtures, as well as breaking news about the side.

The history of the Griquas rugby team can be traced all the way back to 1886, when the team was formed in the British colony of Griqualand West. Only five years later, the team faced a touring British Lions side. The Lions decided that Griqualand West were the best provincial side they faced on the tour, and they presented the side with the Currie Cup.

Griquas then went on to win the Currie Cup competition in 1899 and 1911. However, since the Currie Cup became an annual championship in South Africa, the team has only won the competition once, in 1970.

Today, the Griquas rugby team plays its home games at Griqua Park, which has a capacity of 11,000. The stadium is at its fullest when the side plays against its two main rivals, Western Province and the Free State Cheetahs.

Due to the side's rich history, the Griquas rugby team has produced several Springboks stars over the years. This includes some household names, such as Bjorn Basson and Willie le Roux.

Although the Griquas rugby team is no longer a powerhouse of South African rugby, the side remains highly competitive in the Currie Cup. No current or former Springboks currently represent the side, but the Griquas squad is littered with young and exciting talent. They're now led by captain Ruan Steenkamp
