Glasgow Warriors player ratings: Franco Smith’s side off to a rotten start at Ellis Park, conceding three tries in quick succession as the Lions established early breakdown dominance and never really loosened their grip.

The second half offered little respite. Missed tackles and ill-discipline allowed the hosts to walk through defensive lines, piling on points with alarming ease.

There was scant impact from the bench, and little structural cohesion to stem the tide. This was a season low for a Glasgow side soundly exposed in Johannesburg 54-12.

15. Josh McKay – 5.5
A very mixed afternoon. He conceded two early penalties inside the opening quarter and looked under pressure as the Lions relentlessly targeted the backfield. To his credit, McKay did produce one sharp line break midway through the first half that momentarily lifted Glasgow, but Erich Cronje won the penalty for holding on. Defensively he was far from alone in struggling as the Lions ripped through flimsy tackling in wide channels.

14. Kyle Rowe – 7
Glasgow’s most consistent attacking threat. Rowe repeatedly made Lions defenders miss and ate up metres whenever he touched the ball. His work from the set-piece was excellent, carving through off a lineout move in the build-up to Lancaster’s first-half try. Even when the game ran away from the Warriors, Rowe kept asking questions and rarely hid.

13. Huw Jones – 5
There were flashes of good work; his involvement helped spark Glasgow’s brief second-half revival, but he drifted in and out of the contest. Caught offside on 63 minutes to hand the Lions another attacking platform, and at fault for a number of the late defensive lapses as the hosts cut loose. On this evidence, the Toulon-bound centre might not be as big a loss as feared.

12. Stafford McDowall (c) – 7
Led by example amid the chaos. McDowall was central to Glasgow’s best work with ball in hand, delaying passes superbly and running hard support lines. His try early in the second half, off crisp first-phase play involving Ferrie, Vailanu and Afshar, briefly hinted at something more. One of the few Warriors to consistently get over the gainline.

11. Fergus Watson – 5.5
An eventful outing. Watson was penalised for taking Angelo Davids out in the air, but immediately made up for it with outstanding defensive awareness, sprinting back to shut down Horn’s grubber and somehow staying infield two metres from his own line. Defensively busy, though the Lions eventually found space out wide.

10. Dan Lancaster – 6.5
A blend of composure and the odd misjudgement. Took his try superbly in the first half, running into the hole after McDowall’s delayed pass and converting his own score. He remained brave, taking the ball flat and challenging the line, but sliced a number of conversions after the break and occasionally found himself isolated.

9. Jack Oliver – 5
A baptism of fire on his first start. Oliver looked nervy early, fell off four tackles in the first half alone and struggled to assert control as the Lions dominated the breakdown. There were one or two tidy box-kicks, but he was replaced just before the hour and will know there are better days ahead in a Glasgow jersey.

1. Rory Sutherland – 5
Struggled badly against Asenathi Ntlabakanye. Sutherland rarely got on top at scrum time and was forced into defensive work as the Lions rolled through phases. A tour afternoon he will want to forget.

2. Seb Stephen – 4.5
A poor start, compounded by an early turnover that delighted the home crowd. He battled on but accuracy deserted them for long periods, and Stephen found himself under sustained pressure before making way early in the second half.

3. Fin Richardson – 5.5
Looked the most comfortable of the front row at scrum time and remained busy around the park. Not spectacular, but did his job and avoided some of the more glaring errors that crept into others’ games.

4. Jare Oguntibeju – 6
One of Glasgow’s more reliable performers. An excellent lineout option, he provided some stability in the set-piece and worked hard defensively before being replaced just after the hour.

5. Alex Samuel – 4.5
Conceded two first-half penalties and found himself targeted at the breakdown as the Lions built momentum. Work rate couldn’t be questioned, but accuracy let him down on an afternoon Glasgow were second best in the tight exchanges. Missed a few conspicuous tackles.

6. Euan Ferrie – 6
Led Glasgow’s tackle count – very much a loser’s statistic given the scoreboard – and was involved in the build-up to McDowall’s try. His awareness alongside Watson to hold up a Lions carrier on the five-metre line was a rare defensive highlight.

7. Sione Vailanu – 6
A handful with ball in hand. Vailanu carried hard, particularly during Glasgow’s best attacking spell late in the first half, but missed a few tackles and, like the rest of the back-row, was outgunned at the breakdown before being replaced on 65 minutes.

8. Jack Dempsey – 5.5
Got through a decent volume of carry work but struggled to make serious dents in the Lions’ armour. Industrious without being influential, as Glasgow’s back row were comprehensively outplayed.

Replacements – 5
This was not a game the bench could rescue. There were moments; Afshar injecting tempo and forcing a ruck penalty, but errors followed quickly, Zander Fagerson immediately giving away a peanalty after coming on.

Generous.

Lions defence was excellent. Almost impenetrable.
