England coach John Mitchell has made 13 personnel changes for their Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 Pool A meeting with Samoa on Saturday as Marlie Packer returns as captain.

The Red Roses began their home tournament with a 69-7 victory against USA in Sunderland on Friday with vice-captain Megan Jones and winger Jess Breach – who is one try short of a half century for England – the only two players to retain their places for the match at Franklin’s Gardens.

Breach shifts from the left to the right wing against Samoa, with Claudia Moloney-MacDonald returning from injury on the other flank and Emma Sing coming in at full-back.

Portia Woodman-Wickliffe receives Women’s Top 50 award

New Zealand Women’s superstar Portia Woodman-Wickliffe spoke to RugbyPass after receiving the prestigious, inaugural RugbyPass Women’s Top 50 award this week.

Jones is joined in the centre by Olympian Jade Shekells while Helena Rowland, who missed the opening win with a rolled ankle, is handed the No.10 jersey and Lucy Packer gets the nod at scrum-half.

Up front, Kelsey Clifford, Lark Atkin-Davies and Sarah Bern form a new-look front row with World Cup debutant Lilli Ives Campion and Rosie Galligan named at lock.

In the back row, there is a first World Cup appearance for Abi Burton at blindside flanker. She lines up alongside captain Marlie Packer and No.8 Maddie Feaunati.

Captain Zoe Aldcroft is ruled out of the match through injury and is set to miss England’s final Pool A assignment, against Australia, too. Mitchell’s selection means that Holly Aitchison is the only member of England’s World Cup squad yet to be included in a matchday 23.

Mitchell said: “It has been in our planning to give everyone game time over the first two pool matches and, bar Holly, we’ve been able to execute that with this selection.

Everyone knows Robertson is not supposed to be doing the coaching

Yeah it’s not actually that I’m against the idea this is not good enough, I just don’t know whos responsible for the appalling selections, whether the game plan will work, whether it hasn’t worked because Razor has had too much input or too little input, and whether were better or worse for the coachs not making it work against themselves.

I think that’s the more common outlook rather than people panicking mate, I think they just want something to happen and that needs an outlet. For instance, yes, we were still far too good for most in even weaker areas like the scrum, but it’s the delay in the coaches seemingly admitting that it’s been dissapoint. How can they not see DURING THE GAME it didn’t go right and say it? What are they scared of? Do they think the estimation of the All Blacks will go down in peoples minds? And of course thats not a problem if it weren’t for the fact they don’t do any better the next game! And then they finally seem to see and things get better. I’ve had endless discussions with Chicken about what’s happening at half time, and the lack of any real change. That problem is momentum is consistent with their being NO progress through the year. The team does not improve. The lineout is improved and is good. The scrum is weak and stays weak. The misfires and stays misfiring. When is the new structure following Lancasters Leinster going to click?
