Stick or twist? It is the question that hovers over Union kingmakers when results dip, confidence in the head coach ebbs and a World Cup starts to loom into view. For the RFU, after the Six Nations from hell for England, that conundrum now centres on Steve Borthwick.
With only 18 months until the 2027 tournament in Australia, England’s hierarchy have a critical decision to make.
There are likely to be 16 Tests left for the side before the tournament begins. That is not an abundance of time – but equally the hour-glass is not on its last grain here.
The RFU should not feel boxed in by the time factor. The idea that Borthwick must be given the remainder of the World Cup four-year cycle simply because he has already been in position for the majority of it is fanciful.

The belief that a head coach needs a full cycle to create a side capable of contending for the sport’s biggest prize has traditionally shaped international rugby. It is neat, familiar and often repeated – particularly by head coach’s agents. It is also a myth.
Yes, there are plenty of examples of long-term projects bearing fruit. Logically so, given that this is the ideal. Some are real slow-burners.

Clive Woodward took six years to scale his Everest with England. His team evolved over time and learned from their mistakes, layering on experience and tactical clarity until they eventually became world champions. But to treat that as the only model is to ignore how often international rugby has shown the opposite.

In 1995, Kitch Christie was summoned to replace the axed Ian McIntosh after a series defeat to New Zealand only nine months before the Boks’ own home World Cup.
It was, in his own words, an “ambulance job” which needed a rapier focus and universal buy-in but Christie, under huge pressure to deliver, pulled it off.
He won all his 14 matches in charge as South Africa became world champions. Their story became a film.

The Springboks were in an even more wretched state when Rassie Erasmus took over as head coach in 2018. Up a creek without a paddle under Allister Coetzee, they had slipped to No 6 in the world rankings and had just been humiliated 57-0 by the All Blacks.
But Erasmus turned the super tanker around and by the following year, his Springboks were world champions too.
South Africa are the masters of this sort of quickfire revivalism, but they do not hold a monopoly on it. Michael Cheika almost pulled off a similar trick with Australia. His predecessor Ewen McKenzie’s reign had unravelled amid poor results and damaging off-field discord, leading to the emergency call for the charismatic Waratahs coach a year out from the 2015 World Cup.
His early months were testing and the 2014 European tour offered only patchy encouragement, but by the time of the World Cup, Australia were transformed. Aided by his inspired breakdown double act of David Pocock and Michael Hooper and the inspired reintroduction of Matt Giteau under a relaxed overseas selection policy, Cheika’s Wallabies surged to the 2015 final where it was only one of the greatest sides in history, the back-to-back All Blacks, which stopped them going all the way.
If Borthwick could take over so late and still produce a World Cup run in short order, then his backers at the RFU can hardly pretend a successor would need four years to make an impact.
So the turnaround can happen anywhere. Borthwick himself is proof of the dramatic progress that can be made in a short window. He had just nine Test matches between his appointment as England head coach and the 2023 World Cup in France after Eddie Jones’s dismissal. It was hardly ideal, and England lost six of them, yet they still finished third. Had it not been for Handre Pollard’s nerveless late penalty for South Africa in the semi-final, they would have reached the big dance itself.
The rugby was at times so ugly as to be almost unwatchable. England also benefited from a favourable side of the draw. But facts are facts – Borthwick got England to the last four and within touching distance of something even bigger. With minimal time at his disposal.

Ironically, that knowledge may work against him now. If he could take over so late and still produce a World Cup run in short order, then his backers at the RFU can hardly pretend a successor would need four years to make an impact.
That is as it should be. The RFU, in its review, must resist being swayed by the mythology of the four-year cycle. If Borthwick stays, it should be because the Union believes he is still the right man to lead England to Australia. If he goes, it should be because the RFU believes someone else gives them a better chance of winning the World Cup.
What cannot be allowed to creep into the thinking is the excuse that England are simply too far down the road with him to make a change now.
That is not to say replacing a head coach – and by extension his coaching team – is painless or risk-free. Change comes with no guarantees.
But tactical adjustments, selection shifts and cultural recalibration can be embedded far faster than convention likes to admit, particularly in international rugby where clarity often trumps complexity in importance.

Borthwick has World Cup-related arguments in his favour. He has served at one already as a head coach last time around and has previous tournament experience as an assistant to Jones with England and Japan. That matters.
But after England’s 12-match unbeaten run appeared to suggest they were approaching lift-off velocity, the Six Nations was sobering. Results regressed badly and, until the final-round display in France, the collective under-performance was alarming. In that context, it is only natural that questions should be asked about the head coach.
The RFU may conclude that the downturn was a stumble rather than a dead end and that Borthwick has earned the chance to retune the orchestra.
Equally, they must acknowledge that international rugby has shown time and again how quickly a new coach can alter the direction of travel.
Stick or twist? That decision will define England’s road to Australia. But one thing is clear – the clock cannot be used as an excuse.
I suspect that SB has taken this group of players as far as he can unless he is willing to be more flexible. I cant see him being sacked but there will be some significant changes, in coaching staff,(someone has to be the fall guy), in the captain,( MI for all his attributes is not a leader), in tactics and in certain players. All that would happen with a new head coach anyway but the RFU will keep Borthwick if they possibly can.

The irony for the writer here of course is that the ABs were the product of a stable coaching dynasty spanning 10 years that failed miserably in its first run at the Cup (though I admit with a huge win rate throughout).

Isnt the real question whether Borthwick has shown he can produce a WC winning team and has the players to do it? He showed the former already, and his players looked as good if not better than the French.
The next question is what does the counterfactual look like? Who is the Messiah in waiting. With respect to the names mentioned in multiple posts here - I have never heard of most of them - now thats likely because I am based in the SH - but if they were that good then you would think they would be on our radar. Maybe Mitchell? Chieka and Jake White?
The ABs sacked Razor frankly hoping someone better was out there - crazy stupid in my view - but at least they had two options with two important things - international experience as head coaches and expert knowledge of the NZ game. Who in England has that, not already in the reject pile and is available for England (Farrells taken as far as I can tell)?

Razor didn't know anything else and had he had international experienced coaching staff and some stricter guidelines things may have been different who knows? I CANT see SA do that who resort to forward oriented slogging after QFs. in 2023 they needed a weak opponent in England and a huge dollop of luck. France or NZ are likely final opponents.
To get their it will require a likely QF win over Australia. That will be hugely problematic. And then either Ireland/Scotland/Argentina. That’s what Borther, Blackett and the new defence coach will face. I think Rassie will have better insight as to why no line speed against teams like France than some other SA pundits. When teams are regaining possession in transition, unstructured play, they are hitting 2 second scrums, Scotland are doing it after any kind of momentum. Now some of those pundits should try to rush in defence off 2 second rucks and see what happens. The idea that the 6N attacks are lethal because defences have decided to NOT RUSH is naieve nonsense. SA have peaked too early.

The Rassie situation was different, The Boks brought back their overseas players, they shifted to a conservative style and they had a new group and 19 to 20 matches in which to perfect their style before 2019. KC also won the WC in 1995 because he leveraged the immense momentum of a home world cup and a Nation desperate for success in a new post apartheid South Africa. He didnt have the players but in the transitional era between professional and semi pro rugby he had enough time and feeling in the squad to win. Its fair to say nobody would be able to do that in the modern age. England have the ingredients and Borthwick is a coach who took them to a semi with less. The draw is favourable. Give him the time to develop the team. Changing a coach so soon before a world cup almost never works, it takes unique circumstances to pull it off. Englands circumstances are not unique

We have a Head Coach who can’t decide which tactics to play and has been pretty poor with selection throughout his tenure.
He’s capable of having good short term runs but we have lacked the consistency of the best teams.
It’s one bad year, one good - that doesn’t cut it at this level.
Borthwick’s done a good job with the forwards but he looks utterly lost with the backline & attack.
Had he done what he has done with England with a different team, they wouldn’t give him the ENG job today, so you then have to ask is he the right man for the job going forward and you’ve answered your own question.

This debate is probably 12 months too late and 4 months too early. Which leads me to - don’t sack him, but bring in help.
12 months ago, imo, England were as bad as they seem to be now. In 4 months time they will probably surprise everyone with good performances against the grain of expectation. Like they did against France.
England are currently inconsistent. But they have the players and they clearly can play well on the day. We just can’t be sure when.
A skilled and experienced consultant is probably needed because dumping SB now will set England further back.
I’m not sure he has the best assistant coaches in his team.

The issue with replacing him - if or when they do - is not just who they get but the fact most coaches come with a family. The rugby wife and kids as it were - the handful of assistants
They would need to recruit 3 to 4 positions with staff proven collectively and not individually, of working together
It's obvious who would work, especially if they watched the recent France performance - but would they want the gig?

The cycle isn't unique to coaches either. The players are part of that cycle. It's not like a new coach would need to build a brand new squad which is the first part of the cycle. That is already done. Old players were put out to pasture and new younger players have been blooded. So yes starting fresh after the WC is beneficial but that's partly because you need to blood a new squad for the next cycle. England have shown they're very capable of playing good rugby. Bring in a new head coach, a new defence coach and let Blackett continue to evolve the attack. The only caveat is I would not give them a long term contract as we need to see how the land lies after the WC. We don't want to take whoever is available now and get stuck with them if the likes of Farrell, JVG, Edwards (unlikely and not a head coach) become available after the WC. So bring in a war horse with leadership and experience like John Mitchell, Cheika (🤢), Razor or RoG and let them have a crack with the potential to keep them pending results. It's taken yet another player revolt to get England playing good rugby, it's abundantly clear at this point Borthwick is limiting their potential and how Wigglesworth is still in a job is beyond me. I'm sure he's a lovely coach but he's only marginally more qualified than me to run England's attack or defence.

Tom, as the dust has settled on the Six Nations campaign, I guess the real question is;
Can Steve Borthwick and his assistant coaches get the best out of the current squad of players, or is there a better coach and coaching team that would take them further?
When you see how the same players perform in the Bath or Saints structures, I’ve come to the conclusion the latter would likely be the better option if you added some wider experience at the top.

SB won one premiership playing his brand of Rugby but then the other teams found them out, fronted up physically and Tigers game plan was exposed. Under Parling they are a much more attractive version of the Tigers. When the current coaching team were appointed my heart sank because they are inexperienced at test level, they bring nothing fresh and the approach they bring is inflexible. They are completely out of their depth (Blackett apart) I agree what on earth is Wigglesworth doing coaching defence? Think the results speak for themselves. Some of their selections have been unfathomable and lacking imagination. Freeman is not a 13 at the highest level. He is a world class winger. Steward same; just not the same standard as Ramos, Kinghorn and Keenan (when he is fit).Furbank has to come into the equation. Marcus is a 10 not a 15 but he needs a strong 12 to play around. It is way too soon for Pollock to be in the side and he is increasingly a distraction. We need a proper 8 as well. Last night I watched Lawrence, Ojomoh et al take a good Saracens side apart. Why can’t England play like Bath Bristol and Northampton? The answer is because SB doesn’t believe in that style or maybe doesn’t understand how to implement it. The time for change is now not after the RWC. Most England fans would forgive getting beaten in South Africa and Argentina over the summer if there was a new regime in place and signs of change. Fans pay well over the odds to watch England play boring ineffective rugby. I can’t see it happening, but boycotting home games is probably the only message the RFU would understand. The list of names available all represent an improvement. I would also add Rob Baxter; not a fan of Exeter but he always speaks a lot of sense. All said, it’s depressing to think that we are saddled not only with a poor coaching team, but also with the RFU none of whom should be allowed anywhere near the national team(s). Sweeny et al are the real culprits in all of this.

Get rid of Borthwick as he has achieved very little and overseen some low moments in English rugby. In terms of who you get to replace him well you either go down an interim route where Cheika, Mitchell or Mapletoft would be realistic candidates, and have an eye on an established international coach post RWC like Edwards or Farrell. The other option is to offer someone in the Prem with a good knowledge of the players an opportunity to jump up to international level, which would include Van Graan, Dowson, Baxter, Lam or Parling. There’s no point looking at anyone that isn’t close to or has recent experience in the English game as there isn’t the time to get up to speed with all the players

A short term project requires a particular skillset. That might be a guy like Cheika but I’m not convinced that the RFU will take an expensive punt on another Australian.
Farrell is a pipe dream for RFU. He’s a leaguie for starters. The top three contenders last time around were Borthwick, Robertson and O’Gara. I’d put evens on one of the other two getting the job.

Get an experienced consultant to help him deal with the pressure, and stick to a plan when things don’t go his way.

I’d make two points:
Firstly, the RFU made a laughing stock of themselves by sacking Eddie Jones without having a replacement lined up.
Hopefully they have learnt from that.
Secondly, they need to invest in the right man (be that Andy Farrell, Michael Checka, John Mitchell, or whomever). If that means spending more now (in paying off Borthwick and maybe buying someone else out of their contract) .. then spend it.

Cheika seems to be the best option for quickly turning around struggling teams. The best option might be to bring him in for 18 months, then try to secure Andy Farrell for after the RWC.

I suspect that SB has taken this group of players as far as he can unless he is willing to be more flexible. I cant see him being sacked but there will be some significant changes, in coaching staff,(someone has to be the fall guy), in the captain,( MI for all his attributes is not a leader), in tactics and in certain players. All that would happen with a new head coach anyway but the RFU will keep Borthwick if they possibly can.

Certainly got more out of his England players when they returned to Bath this week than what Borthers managed to get from them - they certainly have a difference in output.

The irony for the writer here of course is that the ABs were the product of a stable coaching dynasty spanning 10 years that failed miserably in its first run at the Cup (though I admit with a huge win rate throughout).
And is there really any logic in changing coaches because its worked for other teams? The Aussies have taken two years to recover from the Jones chaos
Isnt the real question whether Borthwick has shown he can produce a WC winning team and has the players to do it? He showed the former already, and his players looked as good if not better than the French.
The next question is what does the counterfactual look like? Who is the Messiah in waiting. With respect to the names mentioned in multiple posts here - I have never heard of most of them - now thats likely because I am based in the SH - but if they were that good then you would think they would be on our radar. Maybe Mitchell? Chieka and Jake White?
The ABs sacked Razor frankly hoping someone better was out there - crazy stupid in my view - but at least they had two options with two important things - international experience as head coaches and expert knowledge of the NZ game. Who in England has that, not already in the reject pile and is available for England (Farrells taken as far as I can tell)?

The crazy stupid thing was that idiot Robinson giving the gig to a rookie international coach then letting him surround himself with same and telling him just do what you do at the Crusaders and you'll be fine. Razor didn't know anything else and had he had international experienced coaching staff and some stricter guidelines things may have been different who knows? Regarding the RWC, England don’t have to worry about NZ or SA before the final. I could see NZ beating SA and then France. I CANT see SA do that who resort to forward oriented slogging after QFs. in 2023 they needed a weak opponent in England and a huge dollop of luck. France or NZ are likely final opponents.
To get their it will require a likely QF win over Australia. That will be hugely problematic. And then either Ireland/Scotland/Argentina. That’s what Borther, Blackett and the new defence coach will face. I think Rassie will have better insight as to why no line speed against teams like France than some other SA pundits. When teams are regaining possession in transition, unstructured play, they are hitting 2 second scrums, Scotland are doing it after any kind of momentum. Now some of those pundits should try to rush in defence off 2 second rucks and see what happens. The idea that the 6N attacks are lethal because defences have decided to NOT RUSH is naieve nonsense. SA have peaked too early.

The Rassie situation was different, The Boks brought back their overseas players, they shifted to a conservative style and they had a new group and 19 to 20 matches in which to perfect their style before 2019. KC also won the WC in 1995 because he leveraged the immense momentum of a home world cup and a Nation desperate for success in a new post apartheid South Africa. He didnt have the players but in the transitional era between professional and semi pro rugby he had enough time and feeling in the squad to win. Its fair to say nobody would be able to do that in the modern age. England have the ingredients and Borthwick is a coach who took them to a semi with less. The draw is favourable. Give him the time to develop the team. Changing a coach so soon before a world cup almost never works, it takes unique circumstances to pull it off. Englands circumstances are not unique

It didn’t really help South Africa in their case, they lost the next series probably worse.
Probably a better line and angle to take to the decision.
We have a Head Coach who can’t decide which tactics to play and has been pretty poor with selection throughout his tenure.
He’s capable of having good short term runs but we have lacked the consistency of the best teams.
It’s one bad year, one good - that doesn’t cut it at this level.
Borthwick’s done a good job with the forwards but he looks utterly lost with the backline & attack.
Had he done what he has done with England with a different team, they wouldn’t give him the ENG job today, so you then have to ask is he the right man for the job going forward and you’ve answered your own question.
So 3rd place World Cup and then a 12 match winning run counts for nothing. So fickle

This debate is probably 12 months too late and 4 months too early. Which leads me to - don’t sack him, but bring in help.
12 months ago, imo, England were as bad as they seem to be now. In 4 months time they will probably surprise everyone with good performances against the grain of expectation. Like they did against France.
England are currently inconsistent. But they have the players and they clearly can play well on the day. We just can’t be sure when.
A skilled and experienced consultant is probably needed because dumping SB now will set England further back.
I’m not sure he has the best assistant coaches in his team.

I agree with you.Timing is not right for a new coach,help is needed.England have a lot of outstanding and classy players and with time and a bit of patience it will all come together.

The issue with replacing him - if or when they do - is not just who they get but the fact most coaches come with a family. The rugby wife and kids as it were - the handful of assistants
They would need to recruit 3 to 4 positions with staff proven collectively and not individually, of working together
It's obvious who would work, especially if they watched the recent France performance - but would they want the gig?
The cycle isn't unique to coaches either. The players are part of that cycle. It's not like a new coach would need to build a brand new squad which is the first part of the cycle. That is already done. Old players were put out to pasture and new younger players have been blooded. So yes starting fresh after the WC is beneficial but that's partly because you need to blood a new squad for the next cycle. England have shown they're very capable of playing good rugby. Bring in a new head coach, a new defence coach and let Blackett continue to evolve the attack. The only caveat is I would not give them a long term contract as we need to see how the land lies after the WC. We don't want to take whoever is available now and get stuck with them if the likes of Farrell, JVG, Edwards (unlikely and not a head coach) become available after the WC. So bring in a war horse with leadership and experience like John Mitchell, Cheika (🤢), Razor or RoG and let them have a crack with the potential to keep them pending results. It's taken yet another player revolt to get England playing good rugby, it's abundantly clear at this point Borthwick is limiting their potential and how Wigglesworth is still in a job is beyond me. I'm sure he's a lovely coach but he's only marginally more qualified than me to run England's attack or defence.
Tom, as the dust has settled on the Six Nations campaign, I guess the real question is;
Can Steve Borthwick and his assistant coaches get the best out of the current squad of players, or is there a better coach and coaching team that would take them further?
When you see how the same players perform in the Bath or Saints structures, I’ve come to the conclusion the latter would likely be the better option if you added some wider experience at the top.
SB won one premiership playing his brand of Rugby but then the other teams found them out, fronted up physically and Tigers game plan was exposed. Under Parling they are a much more attractive version of the Tigers. When the current coaching team were appointed my heart sank because they are inexperienced at test level, they bring nothing fresh and the approach they bring is inflexible. They are completely out of their depth (Blackett apart) I agree what on earth is Wigglesworth doing coaching defence? Think the results speak for themselves. Some of their selections have been unfathomable and lacking imagination. Freeman is not a 13 at the highest level. He is a world class winger. Steward same; just not the same standard as Ramos, Kinghorn and Keenan (when he is fit).Furbank has to come into the equation. Marcus is a 10 not a 15 but he needs a strong 12 to play around. It is way too soon for Pollock to be in the side and he is increasingly a distraction. We need a proper 8 as well. Last night I watched Lawrence, Ojomoh et al take a good Saracens side apart. Why can’t England play like Bath Bristol and Northampton? The answer is because SB doesn’t believe in that style or maybe doesn’t understand how to implement it. The time for change is now not after the RWC. Most England fans would forgive getting beaten in South Africa and Argentina over the summer if there was a new regime in place and signs of change. Fans pay well over the odds to watch England play boring ineffective rugby. I can’t see it happening, but boycotting home games is probably the only message the RFU would understand. The list of names available all represent an improvement. I would also add Rob Baxter; not a fan of Exeter but he always speaks a lot of sense. All said, it’s depressing to think that we are saddled not only with a poor coaching team, but also with the RFU none of whom should be allowed anywhere near the national team(s). Sweeny et al are the real culprits in all of this.

He has coached in SA, Australia, France, Japan. He has won a World Cup and he is astute in building a sound management team. With the WC draw he will be very well placed to get to the semi’s at least.
Structurally, yes. Jake would help build an appropriate team. He could, feasibly, get England closer to a World Cup final than with what England has now. There’s no way this kind of consistency in performances from good players will see them win 3 knockout games in a row.
Get rid of Borthwick as he has achieved very little and overseen some low moments in English rugby. In terms of who you get to replace him well you either go down an interim route where Cheika, Mitchell or Mapletoft would be realistic candidates, and have an eye on an established international coach post RWC like Edwards or Farrell. The other option is to offer someone in the Prem with a good knowledge of the players an opportunity to jump up to international level, which would include Van Graan, Dowson, Baxter, Lam or Parling. There’s no point looking at anyone that isn’t close to or has recent experience in the English game as there isn’t the time to get up to speed with all the players
Cheika has made a test career out of rescue jobs
He doesn't suffer fools either which is what they need (but the RFU fear)
There would be none of this shyte about a 3 way shootout to settle on a #10, for example. He's decisive in a way that Borthwick isn't
Wingers as centres, a dozen #7’s in the back row or whatever. None of that nonsense
He'd get their house in order. Getting him on an interim is good business too as it could be an extended probation period. He's left his stamp on most teams, club and test level

A short term project requires a particular skillset. That might be a guy like Cheika but I’m not convinced that the RFU will take an expensive punt on another Australian.
Farrell is a pipe dream for RFU. He’s a leaguie for starters. The top three contenders last time around were Borthwick, Robertson and O’Gara. I’d put evens on one of the other two getting the job.
Not sure Farrell is a pipedream. What does him being a leaguie have to do with it? He's already been head coach of England once before. After the world cup, if they throw enough money at him I reckon he might come. Not saying it's likely but I don't think it's a fantasy.
Stick with him, but he doesn’t have much international experience, or experience around him.
Get an experienced consultant to help him deal with the pressure, and stick to a plan when things don’t go his way.
And get Enoka to improve his players ability to handle pressure.
I’d make two points:
Firstly, the RFU made a laughing stock of themselves by sacking Eddie Jones without having a replacement lined up.
Hopefully they have learnt from that.
Secondly, they need to invest in the right man (be that Andy Farrell, Michael Checka, John Mitchell, or whomever). If that means spending more now (in paying off Borthwick and maybe buying someone else out of their contract) .. then spend it.
Fair enough, tho it’s not just the head coach. Any of those you mention would want bring their own ppl with them…. That’s a lot more expense, sometimes buying ppl out of contracts…

Gatland would take it. No doubt. Jake White. Definitely. A lot of people would take it.
Unlike the AB job, nobody would really expect the incomer to win a WC or becoming the greatest team since the ABS of 2015. So it’s a neat little pay packet, with a an 18 month England Stint on the CV for a next big move.

I know it's not a dream ticket to come in right now with 18 months of job security but surely the RFU can get one of them if the price is right? England showed their untapped potential against France, there's gotta be at least some temptation to have a crack at WC glory.
Post-WC they've gotta throw the kitchen sink at Big Faz, even if it's an outside shot.
Cheika seems to be the best option for quickly turning around struggling teams. The best option might be to bring him in for 18 months, then try to secure Andy Farrell for after the RWC.
