Bath player ratings: Bath turned up to Franklin’s Gardens on Saturday with a heavily rested side ahead of their Investec Champions Cup semi-final next week, but almost came away with a draw, only for Fin Smith to break their hearts with a late penalty, delivering a 41-38 win for the hosts.

The result may not have gone the Gallagher PREM champions’ way, but there were many performances that will give Johann van Graan a lot to think about ahead of next week. Here’s how the players rated:

15 Tom de Glanville – 7
Took his try well to keep Bath firmly in the contest during the second half and showed bravery under pressure. Absorbed a huge hit from JJ van der Mescht but still retained possession, which summed up his resilience. Quiet otherwise, but composed when called upon.

14 Louie Hennessey – 8
A major attacking threat. Took his opening try well in the corner and was heavily involved throughout, finishing with nine carries, 71 metres and three line breaks. His offload for Arthur Green’s try and pass for Tom Carr-Smith’s score were moments of real quality. A constant problem for Saints, although it was perhaps a defensive lapse that allowed Tommy Freeman to break on the outside for Saints’ late try.

13 Chris Harris – 5
Worked hard in midfield, making six tackles and winning two turnovers, but didn’t impose himself enough in attack. Seven carries for 58 metres showed some effort, though he lacked a decisive moment.

12 Will Butt – 6
Carried strongly at times (seven carries, 30 metres) and helped create Green’s try with a key contribution in the build-up. Defensively solid with nine tackles, but like Harris, couldn’t quite take control of the midfield battle.

11 Will Muir – 6
Bright early involvement, including a strong kick chase, but his yellow card for a deliberate knock-on proved costly and could easily have resulted in a penalty try. That moment swung momentum and overshadowed the positives.

10 Ciaran Donoghue – 7
A mixed but largely positive performance. Landed four from six off the tee and orchestrated much of Bath’s attacking threat. His long pass for Hennessey’s first try and a superb cut-out ball in the build-up Carr-Smith’s effort were standout moments. However, missed kicks and defensive lapses proved expensive in such a tight game.

9 Bernard van der Linde – 6
Sharp early on, spotting a gap around the breakdown to force Saints’ early yellow card. Unfortunately, his game was cut short by injury soon after, limiting his overall impact.

1 Scott Kirk – 5
Struggled at scrum time, notably folding under pressure and conceding a penalty before half-time. Offered little around the park beyond his set-piece duties.

2 Dan Frost – 5.5
Perfect at the lineout with 100% success and active around the field with 14 tackles. Nearly had a nightmare moment before the break when Josh Kemeny almost stole the ball over the line. Could have done more to prevent Sleightholme’s close-range try.

3 Kieran Verden – 6
A steady shift in the tight exchanges. Made nine tackles and carried five times but lacked dominance at the scrum and didn’t stand out in open play.

4 Ewan Richards – 5
Worked hard defensively with eight tackles but didn’t impose himself physically. Limited impact with ball in hand.

5 Ross Molony – 5
Busy enough with eight tackles but conceded two penalties at crucial moments. Couldn’t provide the control Bath needed in the tight exchanges.

6 Josh Bayliss – 7
Produced a standout moment by chasing down Ollie Sleightholme with impressive pace. Eight tackles and solid defensive work throughout. Energetic and committed across the 80 minutes.

7 Miles Reid – 8
Outstanding defensively in a player of the match display. Led all players with 21 tackles and produced a huge try-saving effort on Alex Mitchell. Also carried 16 times, showing real work-rate and physicality. One of Bath’s best.

8 Arthur Green – 7
Took his try well with good support play and added seven carries for 26 metres. Also produced a huge hit on Fraser Dingwall in a key defensive moment. A solid, all-action performance.

Replacements
16 Kepu Tuipulotu – 8
