206cm ‘world-class lock' re-signs with Super Rugby club and Rugby Australia
Another Wallaby will remain in Australia until the end of 2027, with 25-Test Wallabies lock Nick Frost inking a new deal with Rugby Australia and the ACT Brumbies. This is another coup for Aussie rugby, with Frost emerging as a “world-class lock” during last year’s Spring Tour.
On the same day it was announced Queensland Reds hooker Matt Faessler had penned a new deal with Rugby Australia, Wallabies fans were treated to more good news on Thursday before the clock had struck 1:30 pm AEDT.
Another consistent member of the Wallabies will be eligible to represent the team at the 2027 Men’s Rugby World Cup on Australian soil, with Frost set to continue playing in Super Rugby Pacific for the Brumbies for at least a little while longer.
Frost debuted for Australia against Eddie Jones’ England in 2022, with the 206cm lock going on to make nine appearances that season. The towering second-rower has since played a total of 25 Tests in Wallaby gold, which included a place in Australia’s squad for the 2023 World Cup.
With the British and Irish Lions Series now just a matter of months away, and the World Cup on home soil just around the corner, Frost was eager to sign this deal in a bid to be part of the Wallabies’ squads for those history-making events.
“I’m really pleased to secure my long-term future with the ACT Brumbies and Australian rugby,” Frost said in a statement.
“I feel I have a lot more growth as a player and a person and here with the Brumbies is the best place for me to do that.
“As a kid growing up I always dreamed to represent the Wallabies and with a couple of really key milestones coming up in Australian rugby I’ll be doing everything I can to be part of those in a gold jersey.”
Frost was part of a star-studded Junior Wallabies quad that made the World U20 Championship Final in Argentina, with the men in gold going down to France in that decider. Harry Wilson, Fraser McReight and Noah Lolesio were among the others in that matchday side.
The 25-year-old was part of the Brumbies’ side that claimed a famous Super Rugby AU title in 2020 and has since gone on to make 67 appearances for the club. On the back of those strong performances, it seemed like a matter of when Frost would enter the Test arena.
Frost has gone from strength to strength with the Wallabies since getting that first shot against the English in 2022. Under coach Joe Schmidt, Frost started three of four Tests during last year’s Spring Tour, which included one try in the big win over Wales in Cardiff.
“Nick’s a great athlete who has performed well consistently for both the Brumbies and the Wallabies over a number of years, so to have him re-commit is a positive for Australian rugby,” Rugby Australia Director of High-Performance, Peter Horne, explained.
“We’re looking forward to continuing to watch him develop as a player and a person and to support him to achieve his goals on and off the field.”
ACT Brumbies CEO, Phil Thomson, added: “We’re delighted that Nick has committed his future to the Brumbies.
“Since joining the club in 2019, he has gone from strength to strength and he showed on the recent Spring Tour with the Wallabies how important he is to Australian rugby, having developed into a world-class lock.
“We’re looking future to seeing Nick develop even further in the coming years as part of the Brumbies rugby program and hopefully deliver success on the field with the rest of the team.”
