Despite the All Blacks securing three wins from three games so far on Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry Tour, head coach Dave Rennie is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

His side put 50 points on the 2026 United Rugby Championship runners-up, the Bulls, 54 on the Sharks, and 38 on the Stormers, charging to six wins on the trot ahead of the four-Test series.

But Rennie is clear that they are far from the perfect product, and will need a shift in quality if they want to secure a famous victory at Ellis Park next weekend.

Touching on the contest post-match in Pretoria, the All Blacks head coach said the scoreline is a positive, but there were still aspects of the game that were “frustrating”.

“50 points against a very good Bulls side is a positive. Now, we played a team that was prepared to play today and really took it to us,” Rennie explained.

“I thought our set piece was really strong, especially the scrum. Which I thought, from a discipline point of view, was a lot better tonight.

“We created so many opportunities, eleven line breaks to one. So we probably left a few points out there, which is a little frustrating. But can’t fault the efforts, and a number of boys will be better for the opportunity to run around at altitude.”

“I thought we had a lot of opportunities tonight to really play on top of the Bulls and force defenders to make decisions, and it was almost like we were training for the Springboks.

“We’re coming a lot harder defensively, so it’s good for us. We’ve now got a game at altitude, and guys got an appreciation for that. I thought we worked really hard in those circumstances, and we’ll be better for it.

“So, what we know that the intensity level, the quality that we’re going to come up against next week is three, four, five-fold. We’ve played reasonably well on tour, and we know we need to up the ante.”

When asked specifically about the improvement at scrum time, Rennie shifts the credit to assistant coach Jason Ryan.

“I think it’s a result of just a lot of hard work, a couple of little technical things around the Stormers game that we’re doing better now, and so a lot of lot of good work from Jason Ryan and his group.”

Stand-in All Blacks captain Codie Taylor, who scored a double in his first appearance on tour, said he feels his side has made considerable strides during these tour outings.

“Yeah, I’m sure they’re [Springboks] going to be asking a lot more questions come next week, and from where we started with the Stormers and built our way through these club games, I feel like we made some great strides as a forward pack, and by no means are we the finished product,” Taylor said.

“There’s going to be so much more we can work on, and it’s going to be even tougher come next week. But we can be really happy and confident with the steps we’re making.”

I think it is very obvious these URC teams arent set up to be competitive for reasons we are all aware of ie pre season no boks players etc etc

Sure, glorified training runs and the real test will be in the games called …. ‘Tests’.

However, these games are not worthless to the All Blacks. Match fitness, cohesion, and identifying areas for improvement are all being achieved.

The All Blacks are a vastly better side today than they were against the stormers.

But, which is it?

“The all blacks suck because they let in 3 tries against rubbish urc sides”.

Or,

“It doesnt matter the All Blacks gave them hidings because the URC sides suck. We can’t tell anything”.

Seems pretty contradictory. What exactly do we want to measure progress on?

What improvements is he talking about?

Winning a scrum on their own 5m mark!

Kiwi press have no idea what they are talking about. They think that depleted URC teams missing their Boks and a handful or regular players, playing in their pre-season is good enough to gauge their scrum, and other areas.

Good to get the win and see the discipline improvement. Still improvement needed before the test and Hopefully Jordan and McKenzie are fit and can play the test.

Two training runs that found out Billy Proctor and Caleb Clark from gaining probable Test selection…

Fortunately or unfortunately, a few niggles were identified in the Bulls clash that didn't involve AB's Tour Captain Cody Taylor who displayed his calf strain recovered and leadership prowse, with two tries to seal a Test spot…

Cody will be the starting hooker and Asafo Aumua to impact off the bench...

Fitness after their final training run will sort out who gets a start and I expect that Cam, Ruben, Jordie, Quinn, Fehi and Jordan are injury free and play...still its early days and always be prepared for the unexpected…

That’s a weird post B. I hope it’s the other way round.

Dave Rennie is a rugby man, and a gentleman. Truth is all the sides thus far have been weakened by pre-season form and rest protocols. In all the matches only a handful of the Boks that are in the current squad played. Hardly any of the frontline URC players played.

None were good sides as Rennie kindly said post matches, but they did at least provide training runs for the AB’s

PB I hear you but if we have not heard this a thousand times already just is what it is.

You can only play what’s in front of you and I will add this they all professional so for periods passages situations things not always going to be easy and that’s how it’s played out.

ABs have also changed up their lineup a heap between games.

The depth has looked good they have shown a bit of everything Renz won’t be stoked but will be happy

One tough one might have been OK (I think the first one was good) but really the level of opposition is fairly spot on for what a touring team would prefer imo.
