Watch: Jorja Miller scores 100th SVNS try as All Blacks Sevens miss semis
Two completely different sets of results on Day one of the HSBC SVNS Series circuit for the two New Zealand sides, with the Black Ferns Sevens off to the semi-finals, while the All Blacks Sevens will battle for fifth to eighth place.
The All Blacks Sevens, who lost to Spain, 12-5, to start their Vancouver campaign, finished pool play with a victory over Great Britain, and then a narrow defeat against the Blitzboks.
Tomasi Cama’s side, who are without their head coach after he was unable to travel to Canada, missed out on the final four, finishing third in Pool A, behind both South Africa and Spain.
They will have to settle for the fifth to eighth semi-finals, where they will take on Argentina at 7:52am NZT. France will play Great Britain in the other second bracket fixture, straight after the Kiwis’ matchup at 8:14am NZT.
For Cory Sweeney and the Black Ferns Sevens, they’ll take on the USA in the first SVNS semi-final on Monday morning at 10:17am NZT.
The Black Ferns Sevens started with a convincing victory over Great Britain in their first match of Pool A in Vancouver, before smashing both Japan and France to finish top of Pool A with three wins from three.
During their pool play clash against Japan, SVNS superstar Jorja Miller brought up a special milestone, her 100th career SVNS Series try for New Zealand.
Miller did it in style, picking up the ball inside her own half as she started to drift towards the right-hand touchline, with what looked like nothing doing.
Miller then attacked the line like she has done so often, brushing off two Japanese defenders to break through the line.
The 7-Test Black Fern and reigning HSBC SVNS Series Women’s Player of the Year then burst away from the chasing defenders to go in under the posts, to bring up a significant career milestone.
Jazz Felix-Hotham was quick to cross the white line in the second half, before Miller and Alena Saili added two more before the final whistle.
The Black Ferns’ semi-final opponents, the USA, finished second in Pool B, beating Fiji and Canada, but going down to Australia in their final pool play clash.
The second semi-final for the Women’s circuit in Vancouver will be between Australia and France, at 10:39am NZT time on Tuesday.
On the Men’s side of the draw, current second-placed team South Africa take on Australia in the first semi-final at BC Place, while Fiji meet with Pool A’s runners-up, Spain.
