Things get worse for France as ugly Oscar Jegou incident caught on camera

France’s miserable afternoon at Murrayfield could yet take another turn for the worse after a controversial incident involving Oscar Jegou was caught on camera during their 50-40 Guinness Six Nations defeat to Scotland.

The optics are not great to say the least. Slow-motion footage circulating online appears to show the French back-rower, at best, making blatant contact with the face and eye area of Scotland hooker Ewan Ashman.

The clip has already prompted widespread and scathing criticism of the La Rochelle star and could yet trigger disciplinary action.

If the citing commissioner decides the incident meets the threshold, Jegou could be summoned before a disciplinary committee.

Should he be found guilty of making contact with the eye area of Ashman, the potential consequences are severe and could well end his season.

Offences involving the eyes carry some of the heaviest bans in the sport. Low-end reckless contact can result in suspensions of four to six weeks, while deliberate gouging generally starts at a minimum of 12 weeks and can stretch to 24 weeks or more depending on the severity.

The maximum sanction available for intentional eye gouging is 208 weeks, equivalent to four years.

Even a charge of “contact with the eye area”, which sits below deliberate gouging on the sanction scale, can still result in a significant suspension.

Retired referee Nigel Owens was less than impressed and said as much on the BBC’s coverage of the game: “It definitely should have been looked at. It doesn’t look good, to be honest.

“Looking at that footage, that player is going to be in a bit of trouble. There will be a process in place now to deal with that, but it should have been looked at it in the game, because it is quite clear what the actions were.

“It was a great game of rugby and it didn’t really matter in the context of the game, but on another day, in games where the score is tight, things like this are the ones where you really want the TMO to come in, for the clear and obvious. Even if they look at it and then decide.”

The incident comes at the worst possible moment for France after a chastening defeat that blew the championship race wide open.

Scotland produced one of their greatest performances of the professional era, running in seven tries in a sensational 50-40 win that puts them firmly in contention for a first-ever Six Nations title.

France remain top of the table on points difference ahead of their decisive clash with England in Paris next weekend, while Scotland travel to Dublin knowing a historic title remains within reach.

Whether Jegou will be available for the finale is another matter.

Honestly, I can’t for the life of me understand why the gouging incident was overlooked first by the Ref (who I actually thought had been quite good) who was standing RIGHT IN FRONT when the incident was taking place, nor by the TMO who are usually “sticking their oar in” when not needed or called for)… I sincerely hope that the powers that be, will be fair, wise and just and give this French sorry example if a rugby player, what he deserves… also, (wishful thinking) that the bonus point will be removed from France's performance…

Question is why the tmo missed the very clear replays and the ref didn’t want to know when he was asked to look at it?

If Jegou is cited, he’ll be okay. All he has to do is to get a character reference off Ardie Savea. It worked for Eben Etzebeth…

How will he be okay? Etzebeth got 12 weeks?

Not sure if a character witness is going to be that helpful to be honest. Given his character. Perhaps his solicitor will speak for him?

Unacceptable and very dangerous.

He’s had reprehensible behaviors before, I’m all for a proper sanction.

Maybe he’ll start to think at some point that he doesn’t need to make all the mistakes in order to avoid making them.

Annoyingly good on the pitch, but humanly problematic - he needs therapy.

Website deleting comments of mine based on the same news they reported themselves. Pathetic.

Should be cited.

Clear and obvious eye gouge.

he is French: it is at least 52 weeks, maybe doubled and doubled again, just because. Would his mother be english it would be nothing at all of course.

They wanted to give Even Etzebeth 12 weeks, and that wasn't nearly as nasty as this. Let's see just how consistent the disciplinary panel will be. That is absolutely disgusting. Anything less than 12 weeks is a joke

You're kidding right ? Etzbeth's action was awful and clearly 100% intentional.

Jegou can claim he was reaching for the ball, trying to grasp anything to make his way through the maul. Unlike Etzebeth, no strenght applied on the eyes, the scottish player doesn't even have a reaction.

Etzebeth should have been banned 40 weeks, he got 12. Jegou should never get more than half.

Double dip. Went for them twice.

Optic nerve damage is irreversible.

If it was on the streets after the pubs close, you’re talking 12 years in prison.

That looks bad. Jegou appears to have a second go .. and that’s the difference between an accident and gouging!!

Surely he HAS to be sanctioned!!

He went again for sure.

Most animals don't even do that to each other

6-12 weeks. Depending on if they deem it intentional. Looks that way.

He has a clean disciplinary record if you ignore his cocaine and arrest record.

Should be 12 weeks I reckon.
