Springbok power reigns supreme in Greatest Rivalry thriller

FNB Stadium was roaring for the third Test of the Rugby’s Greatet Rivalry series in Soweto, with more than 85,000 fans recognising the historic nature of the encounter between rugby’s iconic heavyweights.

South Africa’s power at scrum time was a feature throughout 81 minutes of breathless rugby, and while New Zealand produced their own moments of magic, their discipline didn’t hold up in the Bok pressure-cooker. The visitors pulled ahead after a first half that was too tight to call, ultimately prevailing 29-14.

There were signs of early nerves, with Ruben Love firing a pass into touch and South Africa’s first kick pushing long. The Springboks had a chance to attack in the third minute and rumbled forward with a Jasper Wiese carry, but Peter Lakai won a breakdown penalty soon after.

VIDEO

New Zealand were next to break the game open when Lakai broke free down the blindside just one phase after a scrum, and while the ball was stripped and kicked ahead, Will Jordan recovered and broke the line again. Cheslin Kolbe won the race to Jordan’s ensuing chip-and-chase, but it would only relieve the pressure for a moment. The All Blacks’ attack had the wind in its sails, and when Ardie Savea attempted an offload to an unmarked Lakai on the right wing, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu was yellow-carded for sticking his hand out and knocking the ball forward.

New Zealand kicked to the corner, and Asafo Aumua was given the ball, running at full tilt off the ensuing lineout. Savea picked the ball up from the base of the ruck and powered over the line for the first try of the game.

The All Blacks were then penalised four times in a row, starting deep in South African territory and ending up on their own five-metre line, and while they won a penalty during the rolling maul once there, the Boks were soon back on the attack. Playing under another penalty advantage, South Africa charged at the Kiwi line before sending the ball wide to Damian de Allende, who stepped Leroy Carter and drew the final defender to put Cheslin Kolbe over in the corner.

Within minutes, New Zealand made another half-break through Carter, and while Kolbe provided another try-saving tackle, Feinberg-Mngomezulu swiped the ball out of the ruck, and it was collected by Savea, who scored again.

South Africa’s next charge upfield ended with an Eben Etzebeth knock-on and Savea leaving the field injured. Luke Jacobson took over the captaincy for the remaining 50 minutes. The Boks came close to scoring when Ethan Hooker won a dynamic breakdown steal five metres from the Kiwi line, but Will Jordan returned the favour by getting over the ball and winning a penalty.

Jasper Wiese bulldozed through the New Zealand line for the next big break of the game, connecting with Ox Nche, who in turn found a dancing Manie Libbok, who was caught just inches shy of the line. From there, the Boks came up agonisingly short of scoring on successive phases, with the pressure culminating in a yellow card to Ruben Love. The ensuing scrum roared forward, and New Zealand’s attempts at halting the momentum were deemed illegal, with a penalty try awarded.

The seven points evened the scores at 12 apiece just in time for the halftime break.

Related

The All Blacks lost Quinn Tupaea to a knee injury shortly after the second half began. The visitors made it within 10 metres of the Springbok try line, but Will Jordan spilled the ball forward. South Africa then won another scrum penalty, prompting New Zealand to bring their reserve props into the contest.

While the next scrum ended with the same result, the All Blacks won a penalty in the scrum after, and Ruben Love lined up a shot at the posts, missing to the right.

Both teams were hungry for the next points of the game, and who else but Will Jordan to spark something for New Zealand. The winger chipped the ball ahead, and Carter won the race to collect it, popping the ball off the ground once tackled for Jordan to run in his team’s third try of the night.

When South Africa needed a response, Jesse Kriel stepped up to the plate, beating the tackle of Carter and running in a try of his own just two minutes later. Feinberg-Mngomezulu managed to do what Love couldn’t and converted the try, giving the Boks a two-point advantage heading into the final quarter.

The Boks were back on attack when a Jordan clearance ran dead, and another scrum penalty was won. The team went to their driving maul and rumbled forward, with Malcolm Marx splitting off once the line was in sight and putting his side ahead by nine.

Fabian Holland was penalised for cleaning beyond the ruck, and Feinberg-Mngomezulu stepped up to the tee from directly in front of the posts, adding another crucial three points.

A Springbok counter-ruck won another penalty in the 73rd minute, and another maul set the platform for Kriel to make another half-break before an offload to Feinberg-Mngomezulu saw him tackled out just shy of the line.

The final few minutes consisted of more Springbok attack in All Blacks territory until Wallace Sititi got his hands on the ball and inspired one final New Zealand break. More metres were then made down the right edge before Samisoni Taukei’aho finished the game with a consolation try for New Zealand. Final score: 29-24 to South Africa.

Still the power game but with an added dimension with Libbok’s playmaking.

Formidable.

They may be the first team to know what their nailed on best 23 looks like, a year out from RWC

D
Doos 45 days ago

The best attack vs the best defence, maybe a bit simplistic, but one way to sum up this great match up.

P
PMcD 45 days ago

I think it’s the best forwards pack vs the best backline - I think the overall full strength FRENCH attack may be a little better at the moment but the AB’s are improving all the time and should be in a much better place by RWC 2027.

Congratulations totheBokson a superb win!

However as an Englishman the most painful aspect has been that we have been exposed to the excruciating South African TV coverage and commentary!!

The halftime so-called analysis was particularly myopic, biased, and painful!!

Utter crap!!

J
JW 45 days ago

Well done Springbok, you played you’re A game and were better than when the All Black last visited in 2024. We also had the added bonus that the game was a joy to watch (disclaimer all stoppages got skipped).

P
PMcD 45 days ago

That was my favourite game so far of the series.

Boks are getting better each game but AB’s have hung in there.

The AB’s need to reinforce the forwards and play 6|2 if they want to beat the Boks in Aussie. I just don’t see them doing it without a greater forward presence in the final third of games.

J
Jordon 45 days ago

Plenty of gracious bok fans, but it wasn’t as close as some are saying. AB pack got beaten up fair and square. Series clinched 2-1. Well done bokke.

J
JW 45 days ago

That’s just how we play though isn’t it. All Blacks have always done the job despite looking beat all around the park. Different picture than Schmidt or Razors teams.

B
Bazzallina 45 days ago

Boks deserved winners won the muscle battle and imposed themselves in the key moments especially during that 15-20 minutes.

ABs just couldn’t find that purple patch Boks did and the mistakes we made they made it pay tad more especially on the back of a dominant scrum add that together with the turnovers won really squeezed us .

On to Baltimore but Boks get the “series” win in many minds and rightfully to think so .

Few booboos in this one but still a great watch

.

J
JW 45 days ago

Some shocking level of officiating, also some pleasing intent from them though. They’re trying.

2-2 would be a fair representation of the two teams but the Bok certainly won the game the matters here and in good style.

p
proooooovince 45 days ago

What a game! Well played NZ but, too much power and skill from the Boks.

Boks bossed the 2nd half when it was supposed to be all NZ.

On to Baltimore should be a cracker! Starts at 23:00 where I am what’s the time in NZ 😬

J
JW 45 days ago

NZ are strong second half starters and finishes. SB won the battle in between using space and power. 8am broadcast I guess it was saying, so 9am kickoff. Will be able to at least catch one game live!

H
HENDRIK 45 days ago

But the Boks are scrummimg skew!

Clowns🤡🤡

J
JW 45 days ago

It was hilarious when the Boks deliberately twisted the first scrum to the right, just to prove the left side wasn’t their crutch lol

And then got penalised for skewing when pretty much driving straight through!

It was pretty clear today. The Boks are the better team. But it’s not a big deal… there are still 14 months to improve this New Zealand side, and I think the future will be bright.

Love is still learning at this level. We have some big-name players injured back in New Zealand — Tamaiti Williams and Shannon Frizell. Add those two players to the team when they’re 100% fit, and the forward pack will be significantly stronger.

I would really have liked to see Anton Segner against the Boks. It’s a shame he got injured just before the Tests.

Other young players will emerge as well. And I forgot about Leicester Fainga’anuku. The future looks bright.

Now there’s still a fourth match to play in the USA. The Boks have the momentum behind them now, but anything can happen in a one-off game.

L
Lou Cifer 41 days ago

Real pity Segner had to go home. He seemed like the type of player who could make a real difference to the back-row for NZ from what little I saw of him

P
PMcD 45 days ago

Great post B/M - The Boks are finding their rhythm again and have got better each game.

Your post is spot on and with Williams, De Groot, S Barrett, (possibly Brodie), Frizzel, (fully fit) Sititi, Segner, Mounga, Fainga’anuku and possibly Clarke coming back into that matchday 23, it’s going to be even stronger than we have seen on this tour and that will make a meaningful difference over the full 80 min performance. Lots of reasons to be optimistic in the run up to RWC 2027.

J
JW 45 days ago

Lol dude as I said only a handful of this team should be starting in next years Final.

I feel your depression though, we’ve gone from competing at set piece to waving the white flag but at least we get a lot more heart in mouth rugby these days!

R
RugCs 45 days ago

The power scrum was a thing of beauty. Lomax and Bower were in reverse gear and were scrummed back 5 meters past their own goal line. The maul power was just as impressive it was 20 meter drive and will be showed on the highlight replays for years to come.

Well done Bokke, you made us proud wrapping up the series 2-1.

P
PMcD 45 days ago

I’m surprised Rassie hasn’t played Ox/TdT starting and Steenekamp/Louw from the bench, those combo’s seem to be better than playing them the other way around.

Nortje is turning into a very impressive starting lock and will be interesting when RG Snyman returns to add what he brings from the bench.

I also thought Hanekom & Vd Berg have really added impact from the bench - they and Hooker were the big positives from yesterday.

c

All very fair Rug. As much as I hated it, it was awesome to see the machine click and go into overdrive.

H

Unfortunately - this series is destined for a draw in Baltimore.

Well played to the ABs in this home leg for the boks. Really ran the Boks close.

P
PMcD 45 days ago

Great 3 game series HH - I was a bit surprised how rusty the Boks were but they have got better with each game and are hitting their stride again.

I don’t think the Bok team has hit the heights of last Autumn yet but the starting team are finding their ryhthm and there are some nice positives emerging from the bench (Hanekom, Vd Berg) and Esterheizen is looking a true hybrid with each game he plays. I thought he made a strong impact off the bench yesterday.

J
JW 45 days ago

Enjoy the series W.

c
cnw 45 days ago

Thanks HH for the acknowledgement. There is a gulf between the teams in terms of scrummaging - that is very clear. But the ABs showed they have their own kind of lethal too. Great series.

R
RugCs 45 days ago

Don’t underestimate the impact and loss of Ardie. Without him they have no world class forward on the park.

B
Blackmania 46 days ago

It’s highly likely that De Groot, Tuipulotu and Lord will be brought into the team for Baltimore. Taylor should also come back into the mix. I imagine Lakai will replace Ardie at No. 8, with Vaa’i and Jacobson at 6 and 7. Mo’unga will play alongside Roigard, while Rieko will replace Tupaea. Moorby or Fineanganofo will come in for Carter.

c
cnw 45 days ago

Mania why not Sititi at 8 and Lakai at 7 after that performance - what else does Sititi have to do to start. He was instrumental in two tries, tackled and carried like a demon and was mistake free. He had most defenders beaten and most carry metres for a AB forward and only behind Jordan in the backs.

U
Utiku Old Boy 45 days ago

For me, Fehi before either Moorby or Carter. Taumoefolau and Fihaki for EOYT with Tangitau getting a shot next year. Also, I’d like to see Blackadder replace LJ who is ragged. Lakai could play seven, Sititi at eight and either Vaa’i or Parker at six with Blackadder off the bench. The front row is not getting better and the lighter scrum did not help.

T
TokoRFC 46 days ago

Good game Springboks, very composed when the heat got turned up and took their chances when they got them.

The result was well earned. The All Blacks are tracking well but there are some fundamental things that need to be sorted before we can expect to consistently beat the top sides

A couple of defensive misreads under pressure - no names - and it's 14 PTS

It's a huge compliment to both teams. They are both operating at the pinnacle of the sport and it's ruthless

Brilliant run of 3 games so far. Brilliant stuff.

U
Utiku Old Boy 46 days ago

Congratulations Springboks. Played your game and controlled the second half. More convincing than the final score margin. ABs have the opportunity to grow from this defeat and I hope they do. Some individuals were found out and we will see how the coaches adapt. I feel the trajectory of this ABs team is still encouraging but the execution in these tests has been ragged at times. We’ll see what happens in Baltimore but overall, this series seems to be reflecting an accurate advantage to SA.

J
JW 45 days ago

That’s a little negative Utiku, felt the ABs had a lot left out there (for various reasons). That’s I suppose where this AB group is at.

G
GrahamVF 46 days ago

Hi UOB - it could have gone either way - what a fascinating test - Bok power winning the day but All Black magic and congrats to the All Blacks on some absolutely breath taking rugby. What a spectacle - there are no other two teams who could have produced a test of such high quality and such entertainment.

Can’t wait for next week

H
HS 46 days ago

I guess there will not be another debate about scrums after today.

Hope that Cheslin and Ardie will be back soon. ABs missed Ardie a lot, and their depth will be tested next week with 13 likely out as well.

Roigard gets the Nick White trophee.

One easy try and a good pick up from Ardie vs two soft shoulder moments from Carter.

The try by Marx was a thing of beauty. ABs lucky that no prop was carded.

G
GRB13 45 days ago

Chelsin has a broken jaw and Ardie will likely be out for 6 months at least according to a physio.

J
JW 45 days ago

I guess there will not be another debate about scrums after today.

What on earth makes you say that? Just how the sb scrum is great getting a shove and catchings teams or all the erroneous penalties they got awarded by a ref out of his depth?

Gotta say even though Louw was propping against the hook instead of his opposite I loved the way he engaged even when NZ were trying to take his space.

ABs missed Ardie a lot

Lol 🤦‍♂️

Share the hope though. The maul try was great strategy and yeah you’re talking about the penalty try, what on earth happened there, unless the SR law that you don’t need to card on penalty tries is in play? Lots of other gifts going SA’s way by Nika though!

B
Blackmania 46 days ago

The better team won. Far too many individual errors from the All Blacks to have any chance of winning this game. Leroy Carter’s defensive mistakes were extremely costly… two duels lost = 14 points!

Rennie said he was a better defender than Moorby!? Really… I don’t think we’ll be seeing him in the No. 11 jersey again anytime soon.

Some players now seem to be running out of gas, Roigard and Jordie being two examples…

Love wasn’t good enough. He’ll give up the No. 10 jersey to Mo’unga in the USA. This team is still learning… but the team on the other side is simply one, if not two, levels above. There’s still one year to close the gap.

As for the injuries, Savea seems to have picked up a serious one. We’ll have to wait and see, but it doesn’t look very promising for the rest of the season.

And finally, the bench… I wasn’t convinced by the choices regarding the backline cover. This game shows that I was right…

The All Blacks can still go 2-2 in the USA, but at the moment the momentum is clearly with the Boks for a 3-1 series win.

PMcD 45 days ago

Great post.

Lots of progress on this tour for the AB’s. Front row is taking shape (Williams will be a welcome return addition). Holland is growing with each game and the stocks are building at lock. I think Lakai & Ardie are starters in the back row and I still think it will end with Frizzel, Lakai, Savea and I would have a 6|2 bench with 3 x front row, Darry, Vaa’i & Sititi off the bench, which looks a solid combo to help finish games.

They were edged by the SA bench this week, so 6|2 would help and Sititi did well to show you what you have been missing from the pine.

The back line has been great but I think 11 & 15 are still the question marks and it feels like Clarke & Love could perfectly solve those problems at 11 & 15, with Ritchie at 10 and Rieko on the bench in a 6|2 split.

I think those changes would improve this team further and maintain the positives in the back line, whilst adding a bit more firepower up front.

However this ends, it’s been a lot closer than I thought since last November and the AB’s have made a lot of progress under Rennie and are still on the up. Key question is how much further can they improve.

c
cnw 45 days ago

Agree Mania - we were marmalised in the scrum. Carter was bad, but we just cant win rugby if you cannot get parity in the scrum. And its a whole of pack thing. For me the boys need Cron back and 10 months isolation in a scrumaging training camp! On the positive - another four tries even with a marmalised scrum. Kick receipt not bad, and our carriers were excellent - great to see Sititi in full flight again. And all that said - this has been a great series - the boys have done us proud.
