Halfpenny’s future had been the subject of speculation months before Toulon opted against offering the British and Irish Lion a new contract.

Wasps were among the clubs keen to recruit the 28-year-old, but the Premiership side’s director of rugby said they are not prepared to wait any longer for Halfpenny to decide what his next move will be.

“We were really keen to get Leigh on board and we tried over a period of months,” Young told The Rugby Paper.

“But we found it very hard to get a decision out of him and in the end we couldn’t get one. We have moved on since then.”

Bath are now thought to be the front-runners in the battle for Halfpenny’s signature.
