The 12-player team travel to the UAE today in preparation for the event. They are grouped with Thailand, Czechia and Mexico in Pool A.

At the conclusion of the tournament, the top two men’s and women’s teams will automatically qualify for HSBC SVNS 2.

The second tier competition begins in February and has stops in Kenya, Uruguay and Brazil before its conclusion in March.

The top four men’s and women’s teams from HSBC SVNS 2 will earn a spot at the HSBC SVNS World Championship events, which will take place across three legs in Hong Kong, Spain and France.

Afrika has selected the same 12 players that won the Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens two months ago. Nadine Roos will captain the side again and will be joined by her 15-a-side teammates Zintle Mpupha, Bryhandre Dolf and Ayanda Malinga again.

Cecil Afrika, Springbok Women’s Sevens coach, said: “The players sacrificed a lot of the last couple of weeks, training while everyone else was seemingly having a break or a good time.

“They all know what is at stake though and I cannot fault the effort of everyone that was involved. The 12 players selected have to go and do the job on behalf of the whole group and with the experience in the squad, I am confident we have what it takes.

“Our focus is on our standards and processes. We know what we need to do and by keeping our focus, how to get there.”
