It was ruled correctly, he perhaps shouldn’t have even been carded at all as the onfield ref missed the mitigation the TMO used to take it no further.

Rugby laws are structure around intent. It was ruled Beirne being offside caused that incident, and you can clearly see him stand up at just the wrong time to block LJ.

Yeah he’s always been considered to have a strong shoulder but he’s not displacing Russell nor Tuipulotu but with Kinghorn out he’s found room at 15 yeah.

But he’s a really nice footballer and, from little I’ve seen on Burke, can beat any of the other contenders for those spots for a while yet.

At some point on this tour I would like to see Ardie come off bench and Lakai or Wallace start at 8 or even both to start in whatever mixer of the loosies you wish..

Using those young legs if they can do the biz for 50-60 show Boks something different to then bring on Ardie to go full throttle could prove a difference in getting a win down the track.

Yeah agree. I am more nervous / ampted about this game then I was before the Eden Park game. This year we clearly have a clash of two styles - the Bok machine like efficiency, clinical power and speed against the Black Hurricanes. It is just too hard to call how this will pan out, though the odds clearly favour the Boks. While early days in the AB “revolution” - it is a game that goes to the identity of the ABs. A loss here playing well and without fear will be received well - a step in the journey - play poorly and without confidence and the hype and hope around Rennie will fade very quickly.

Ranking 21 England back-row options ahead of the 2026/27 season

It will be interesting to see what shape Lawes is in having been away but I heard his interview and he is clearly targeting a spot in the squad, so it wouldn’t surprise me if we see Lawes, Earl, Pollock with possibly Chessum, Curry & Pepper off the bench, which would certainly add energy and experience from the bench to help close out games.

Well don’t know what Rennie thinks! But Sititi a must on the bench. He has the best test carry and tackle stats between him, Segner and Lakai. The club games dont tell us much in my view. Key among those stats is a 90+ % tackle completion in tests. Segner had great stats in the club games, but test match is another level. Lakai had poor tackle completion - in the 70s. I also think Sititi ruck performance is the best of those three as well.

Personally i’d have Chessum, Pollock and Earl. so many attacking and defensive options. Second row Cole’s and Martin. i think that back 5 would have a great balance of grunt and speed

As a Saffa and Bok fan I have never been a Jake White fan. Him slipping in that he’s won a junior WC and a WC is typical of him - look at me!

Before the 2007 WC he had a poor record, was summoned back to SA in the middle of the November tour to answer to a “No confidence” vote against him and somehow wormed his way out of it. Eddie Jones was then brought in, and the Boks won the WC - go figure.

I think we both are old and wise enough to know that World Rugby are trying to protect the referees from online fan abuse etc and both Rassie & Rennie should know better but this current frenzy between both sets of fans probably isn’t helpful.

Personally I am just looking forward to the Tests and I really hope they live up to their billing and expectations (which they should do).

Its about optimal combination of scrum power, aerial performance, carry and tackle capacity, and mobility. Paddy and Holland are the ABs power scrumagers, Holland, Darry and Lord the ABs aerial go too (alongside Vaa’i who will play 6), Lord and Darry are the most mobile / agile and Darry has big carry and tackle numbers. For me we need a combination of all four against the Boks - ideally mix of all attributes maxed. So for me its Paddy and Lord to start and Holland and Darry to finish, and one of Segner, Sititi or Lakai on the bench. But failing that, Holland and Paddy start, Darry on the bench. Darry’s numbers have him playing like a 2.03 flanker - he is a must off the bench against the Boks. I would have Sititi sub Ardie - yeah everyone wants Segner or Lakai - but playing the Boks aint like playing the club teams - and Sititi had the best numbers across the key carry and tackle stats playing test matches. But hey Segner or Lakai not a bad option.

Ranking 21 England back-row options ahead of the 2026/27 season

England’s back-row depth remains one of the deepest pools in world rugby, which is exactly why selection will keep causing headaches. Earl as the most consistent performer over the past 18 months makes sense at the top; Chessum’s hybrid role at six reflects a clear coaching preference rather than a shortage of specialist flankers.

The interesting tier is the one just below the locked-in group: Underhill’s form when selected, Pollock’s impact from the bench, and the wildcards of Lawes returning and Sotutu arriving. With Willis gone to France and several players managing mileage or injury, the 2026/27 Premiership season will sort who is genuinely in the World Cup conversation and who is still waiting for a clear run of club form. Depth is an asset only if the hierarchy stays coherent under pressure.

Either way, win or loss, this tour is a great coup for NZR in terms of next year's WC. Such great prep and leanings. I reckon the ABs have so much more to gain than SA in that context.
