Le Crunch or Le Sack? 11 potential candidates to replace Steve Borthwick

The RFU might have circled the wagon around beleaguered boss Steve Borthwick, but it seems as if he is only living on borrowed time after Saturday evening’s embarrassing defeat to Italy in Rome.

Predictably, within minutes of the final whistle in the Stadio Olimpico, press releases from bookies started to drop into journalists’ inboxes and here are who we think are the runners and riders.

Scott Robertson
Razor lost a dressing room power battle with some of the All Blacks bigget stars following an internal review into summer defeats to Argentina and South Africa. His availability to take the England job would depend on the terms of his settlement. Unlike England, when they released Eddie Jones, he immediately got a job with Australia because the clause stopping him from taking a job with another Tier One nation wasn’t included.

Ronan O’Gara
The former Lion is supposed to be under contract to La Rochelle until the end of next season but there have been whispers about his future all season. He is the favourite to land the Ireland job if Andy Farrell decides to move on when his contract runs out after the World Cup. And after Graham Rowntree left his job as Munster head coach, he said he hoped his next rugby was in charge of an international side.

Andy Farrell
Without a doubt, Farrell, who led the Lions to success in Australia, would be a popular choice among the fans and is out of contract after the World Cup next year, which is the problem. Despite being set for talks with the IRFU after talk of a £1 million offer to return to Saracens, he is extremely unlikely to leave with the World Cup being so close.

Rob Baxter
It was always assumed he would spend his entire career in Devon, but he was willing to speak with the RFU when they were looking for Eddie Jones’ successor four years ago. He has just started to rebuild the Chiefs, but if Twickenham’s top brass wanted an Englishman to succeed Steve Borthwick, he would have to be in the conversation.

Phil Dowson
The Northampton Saints have done a brilliant job taking the club to the back of the club game, and he is known to have ambitions of coaching England one day. Insiders say his last one contained an International release clause, and it should be assumed his new one does as well. Sorry, Saints fan, but he would be among the front-runners.

Shaun Edwards
One of the RFU’s biggest mistakes in the last 20 years was not snapping him up before he went to Wales. They have let him slip their fingers a couple more times. A born winner, he deserves a crack at a top job, but could be problematic getting one of the greatest defence coaches out of his deal with France.

Johann Van Graan
He has done what many other coaches failed to do by turning Bath into a trophy-winning machine. He has been earmarked to take over as Springboks boss when Rassie Erasmus eventually decides to call it a day, so he may decide to keep his powder dry for then rather than risk everything by taking the England job.

Jamie Joseph
He fell just short of getting the All Blacks’ top job to Dave Rennie, but after getting into the final two, would probably fancy a crack at the England job, but would be a rank outsider.

Michael Cheika
Someone who certainly has the pedigree to do the job, but is working in the NRL this season, where he is already being tipped for a top job, so it could be a year too late.

Michael Cheika of <a href=

John Mitchell
Would be a left-field choice, but he is already employed by the RFU after taking the Red Roses to World Cup glory, and if they wanted to avoid paying any compensation, he has worked in the senior men’s coaching team in the past.

Jake White
A former Rugby World Cup winner with the Springboks, White definitely has the experience to do the job and is looking to get back into coach after being interviewed for the Treviso job.

Borthwick was over promoted, he doesn't have the vision or man management to lead an international team.

Someone like Cheika would do a good job, tho’ I believe he left Tigers because he wanted to go back to Oz so can't see why he'd take this on.

JVG has done an excellent job at Bath, they play some decent stuff and Pat Lam would certainly be a break from the kick it up in the air and hope approach and always seems to get the best out of players.

There are good players in the England squad, my big concern is that there doesn't appear to be anyone with the strength of character to tell the coaches what they're doing is wrong and force a rethink. I don't think Johnson & co would have just meekly followed the game plan when it so obviously doesn't work.

If England want to be great again Scott Robinson is by far the best . He could win the WC .

Of the rest Jake White would also lift them .

The forwards are fine . The back are ordinary and the coach is poor .

I’d add another name .. Geoff Parling. He’s a British& Irish Lion .. whose been part of the Australian national coaching set up (so he ticks various boxes).

All would be better than Borthwick. Van Graan, Edwards, and Dowson would be my shortlist. Cheika, Mitchell and White would be great options for interim role to the end of next year

JJ would never go for the England job. He outright said he moved back to NZ to see his children more. Ridiculous suggestion.

Any prospective coach would have to think long and hard

The RFU currently seems to be where careers and reputations go to die

No mention of Sir Clive Woodward.

It’s clear to all and sundry Borthwick is a limited coach - many saw this before his unveiling, you have all the talent readily available domestically to challenge top honours so the notion of overseas based players making a massive difference is mute imo. England need brains within that coaching setup which is nowhere near international standard. Arrogance has always been a trait within England rugby and their unpalatable press, until this changes I don’t forsee any World Cup wins. 12 changes to the match day squad to play away from home in Rome - against the best scrum and midfield in the 6N (sorry Scotland - Italy have edged this one for quite some time ) reeks of cluelessness. Players are being led by mediocrity and their self importance and poor attitude is playing out like a car crash. Wales have next to nothing comparatively speaking but look at their last 2 results - mindset - attitude - passion.

Hands off Van Graan! You can have White..

I disagree. Him joining the boks after a stint with England would make him an even better prospect as a future Bok coach.

Can I have a word your Honour? 23 hours ago

Even Warren Gatland or Ian Foster maybe?

Or how about some of those POD Blokes or Pundits like Andy Goode, Matt Dawson etc? Instead of doing the talking, they can do the walking!

If England hire Gatland I'm done.

John Mitchell would have to be high on the candidate list.

D

Quality no doubt however he’s off the pace in terms men’s rugby, how much patience would the public have with him getting up to speed?

Slightly off topic, but a point that should be considered if a change to the England head coach is now being seriously considered.

If England’s current form impacts gate receipts at Twickenham in the fall, then some sort of eligibility rule change definitely has to be introduced.

When you weigh-up the cost of sacking Borthwick and recruiting a new coach against tweaking selection policy rules, then the latter is a far cheaper option, which is ultimately all the RFU care about.

That being said, even with all England players available to Borthwick, would he still be able to fashion a winning side? Many - and I’m also leaning this way now, think Borthwick just doesn’t have the rugby vision regardless of the tools available to him.

Mark Mcall is the free and blindingly obvious candidate if they want a domestic candidate/miss out on rog, Robertson or Cheika.
