Ireland head coach Andy Farrell has included uncapped duo, Munster lock Edwin Edogbo and Ulster scrum-half Nathan Doak, in his squad for the 2026 Six Nations.

Edogbo was due to feature in the Quilter Nations Series in November, but was ruled out through injury, while Doak will provide cover for Jamison Gibson-Park and the fit-again Craig Casey.

Other big winners include Six Nations rookie, winger Tommy O’Brien, and his Leinster team-mate, fly-half Harry Byrne, who has worked his way back up the pecking order after being cast out on loan to Bristol last season.

The four-times capped Byrne will compete with Sam Prendergast and Jack Crowley for Ireland’s No.10 jersey.

Munster winger Robert Baloucoune has also been recalled, having won the last of his four caps in November 2022.

Caelan Doris will once again captain Ireland.

Ireland have been been beset by injury with Andrew Porter and Robbie Henshaw missing the start of the competition because of respective calf and knee issues.

Cormac Izuchukwu, Calvin Nash, Jimmy O’Brien, Ryan Baird, Shayne Bolton, Mack Hansen, Jordan Larmour and Paddy McCarthy are also in the treatment room.

Hugo Keenan is present despite not having played this season because of hip surgery that was completed after the British and Irish Lions tour to Australia.

“I’m getting there,” Keenan said. “I feel I’ve turned the corner in the last couple of weeks.

“I’ve been back out training fully with Leinster the last week or two, so starting to come good.”

The Ireland squad will assemble in Dublin on Sunday before travelling to Quinta do Lago in Portugal for a warm-weather training camp.

Additionally, it has been confirmed that Mick Kearney will return as Team Manager ahead of the start of the Guinness Men’s Six Nations, which kicks off with Ireland’s visit to Paris to play France, on Thursday, February 5th.

Previously Kearney had fulfilled similar positions with Leinster and the Ireland U20s. This will be the Lansdowne man’s third stint as Ireland Team Manager.

Commenting on the squad announcement, Andy Farrell said: “I am delighted to announce the squad for the forthcoming Guinness Men’s Six Nations. I believe that we have a talented and committed group who have the aptitude and drive to bring success to Ireland over the coming weeks. The Six Nations is an incredible tournament which brings out the best in players, and I have no doubt that these fixtures will be keenly contested once more.

“The squad has evolved over the last 18 months, with 12 players making their international debuts over the last year alone, and I know how keen this group is to make its mark for Ireland. Led once more by Caelan (Doris), we know that we have to hit the ground running and we’re looking forward to regrouping on Sunday and meeting the challenges ahead in a positive frame of mind.

“In congratulating each of the players on their selection, I am also pleased to welcome back Mick Kearney as Team Manager. Mick is vastly experienced and has played a key role in mentoring a vast number of players for many years. I have no doubt that he will continue to positively influence the squad in this campaign and beyond.”

The two rookies deserve the call up and I hope they get game time. I think that Doak has a high ceiling and if he can ups his pass speed and decision making a couple of clicks to international level then it would be a great outcome. 3 starting SH in 3 provinces. Edogbo is a big fella and pads out the ‘row. I think we look light at 2d row so it is good to see him in there and Ahern as a hybrid, Beirne can’t (or shouldn’t) play every game for 80 mins.

The props will be a real exercise in adversity. Back row looks very much as you were.

Couple of surprises in the backs. Happy to see Balacoune in there as he has electric pace, he just needs a bit of luck. Apart from Tommy O’Brien, he is the only speedster in that squad of backs.

I am less convinced by the centre stocks. McCloskey is the form guy, Ringrose looks off the pace and after that it’s an out of form Bundee and Tom Farrell who is a very good provincial player but I don’t think has the pace or skill level for international. Maybe he gets a new lease of life in the international squad. Chances are Frawley gets the bench spot as he can cover 10/12/15.

As long as the total squad ups their cap numbers and experience, not just the same guys, and the performances match the aspirations then I’ll be happy to see AF building towards ‘27.

Edogbo is an absolute unit but the back row is starting to look a bit thin on the bench.

It wouldn’t surprise me if they play McCarthy, Edogbu and play Beirne at 6, who will also contest the lineouts.

This Six Nations is going to be a real test for the Irish youngsters.
