Hurricanes provide season-ending injury update for departing midfielder

Higgins, who has played 19 games for the Hurricanes since making his debut in 2022, will miss the rest of the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season.

In April, the 23-year-old signed a three-year deal with Scottish side Edinburgh, starting at the conclusion of this year’s campaign with the Hurricanes.

Higgins has struggled with injuries in the past two campaigns, after bursting onto the scene with Wellington in the Bunnings NPC competition in 2022.

The midfielder represented the New Zealand U20s in 2022 and made one appearance for the All Blacks XV under Clayton McMillan in 2024.

Hurricanes head coach Clark Laidlaw emphasises how disappointing it is for both Higgins and the club.

“It’s disappointing for Riley and us for his season to finish in the way that it has,” Hurricanes head coach Clark Laidlaw said.

“He’s had a tough couple of years with injuries, so to pick up another injury is super disappointing for him. We’ve been able to support him through this period before he takes off and help him with the initial part of his rehab.

“We feel for him and wish him well with his recovery as he prepares to head offshore.”

After his departure to Edinburgh was announced, Higgins told edinburghrugby.org that he hopes to improve his game in the next few years.

“I can’t wait to get stuck in with Edinburgh. It’s a big move but the challenge of testing myself in a new competition, with such a great team and such passionate fans, is very exciting.

“The club has a great feel to it and I can’t wait to grow my game with Edinburgh Rugby over the next few years.

“I’m still young and learning but I’m hungry to improve as a player and person on and off the field, and help the team wherever I can in the hope of winning some titles.

“Fans can expect a hard-working player who will never give up, and someone who brings an exciting style of play. I can’t wait to see you all soon!”
