There is a noble, but arguably errant stubbornness about New Zealand Rugby’s steadfast refusal to bow to internal and public pressure to allow Richie Mo’unga to be available for the All Blacks series against South Africa later this year.

Noble because there is always something admirable about an institution that has the fortitude to stay rigidly devoted to a belief even if the vocal community disagrees with the logic.
Potentially errant because NZR’s refusal to tweak the existing eligibility legislation to allow all returning players who have signed a contract – regardless of the duration of that agreement – to be immediately available for the All Blacks, has given head coach Dave Rennie a tricky mini-assignment as part of his enormously difficult macro task of trying to reset the national team and win next year’s World Cup.
To explain, NZR has a sliding scale of privilege dependent on how long a returning player commits to stay in New Zealand.

In the case of Mo’unga, he has signed an 18-month deal, and although he will be back from Japan in June, he won’t be eligible for the All Blacks until the Bledisloe Cup series against Australia in October.
If he had signed a three-year deal, he would have been eligible earlier – and available for the Greatest Rivalry series against South Africa in August-September.
Rennie revealed to media last week that when he came into the job in March, that he had been provisionally planning for Mo’unga to be available for the South Africa trip.
He wasn’t explicit, but he presumably thought that his request for Mo’unga to be granted an exemption by the NZR board would be granted.
We haven’t asked the board to relax that policy around Richie. We think the policy works for us. It keeps our best players in New Zealand playing in our competitions.
But NZR’s leadership didn’t agree. They believe the current policy makes sense in the long term and that it would set a dangerous precedent to make a special case of one player, which is why chief executive Steve Lancaster presented a paper to the board in early May that recommended not relaxing the current settings or making an exemption for Mo’unga to be fast-tracked.
“This is something we regularly revisit with the board,” Lancaster told Newstalk ZB. “It’s a relevant thing for our board as governors of the game to regularly consider and reflect on.
“We haven’t asked the board to relax that policy around Richie. We think the policy works for us. It keeps our best players in New Zealand playing in our competitions.”
The rationale for not changing is to protect the players who have remained in New Zealand and honour the terms and conditions that they were promised when they committed to stay.
In other words, NZR says that someone such as Damian McKenzie made a four-year commitment to stay and that the current eligibility rules – him knowing that Mo’unga (or any other offshore New Zealander) couldn’t come straight back into the All Blacks – would have been a factor in that decision.

“We’ve got some world-class players in the same position, and a number of those have committed to stay in New Zealand and play on the basis of the policy,” Lancaster said.
Leaving aside whether this was the right or wrong decision, what it has done is set up a hugely intriguing battle between McKenzie, Beauden Barrett, Mo’unga and Ruben Love.
And, it has created a difficult juggling act for Rennie as he tries to work out who he wants to install as his chief play-maker in the pre and post-Mo’unga periods and how he intends to use those who miss out.
The situation for the first seven Tests of the year has been simplified as Mo’unga will be able to train with the team but not play.

What’s revealing – indicative even of how the incoming coach sees the pecking order when all four are available – is that Rennie clearly had a plan earlier this year based on Mo’unga being granted an exemption. “My thinking would have been that we wouldn’t have used him [Mo’unga] in July [Nations Championship],” Rennie said.
“We’ve got good depth. We’ve got guys who are currently playing, but the thinking would have been Richie would be in the group, getting his head around how we’re going to play the game and the detail within that, include him in the squad to Africa and probably play him against the Stormers (in the) first game and let him earn the right to fight for a Test spot.
“But obviously the criteria means he can’t do that. I know there’s been a lot of chat around it and I guess the protocols mean that because Richie hasn’t committed for a couple of years, he’s not available to come to Africa and he’ll play NPC.”
There is still, however, a chance Mo’unga ends up in South Africa as Lancaster has confirmed an exemption will be granted if there are injuries.
But assuming he doesn’t make it to the Republic, Rennie’s going to have to find a different entry point for Mo’unga to play and stake his claim for the role, and the two-Test series against the Wallabies in October is tailor-made for that.

The All Blacks will play another 12 games – the remainder of the Nations Championship (Scotland, Wales, England, finals), an Anzac Day Bledisloe, a full Rugby Championship and a game against Scotland in Dunedin – before the World Cup kicks off, time that Rennie will presumably use to refine the team’s attack patterns and build cohesion.
It’s likely, given the need to enhance the team’s understanding of his vision, that he’ll want to be relatively consistent in his selections in those 12 Tests, which means he’s probably going to have to make a call about his preferred No 10 on the back of limited audition time for all of them.
Mo’unga will have the guts of the October Bledisloe series to state his case – but what about the seven upcoming Tests – the Nations Championship fixtures against France, Italy and Ireland and the four Tests against the Springboks?
Will Rennie play it relatively safe and entrust the No 10 jersey and the strategic management of the team in this period to Barrett?
In big games Barrett’s experience has counted and while he hasn’t shredded defences the way he used to, he’s given the team a calm head and played the percentages well enough.
The veteran hasn’t set Super Rugby alight and while some of that has been because the Blues have been strangely disjointed, Barrett has still looked reticent and hesitant.
Questions will be asked whether Barrett still has the electric pace, bold vision and ability to play with the ingenuity he did between 2016 and 2018, but in recent seasons he has been the steadiest and most reliable co-ordinator and game manager the All Blacks have had.
In big games his experience has counted and while he hasn’t shredded defences the way he used to, he’s given the team a calm head and played the percentages well enough.
The big unknown, however, is what the arrival of Rennie and new attack coach Mike Blair will bring to the All Blacks. There is a sense that the previous regime was muddled in how they wanted the All Blacks to play and it’s possible that Barrett was installed as the preferred No 10 not necessarily because he was the most dynamic, but because he was the least confused.
If the All Blacks want to make major shifts in their performances, they will need to play at greater pace, find more variation in their patterns and be a genuine triple-threat team again and Barrett will have to prove he is more than a safe pair of hands to keep the role longer term.
There is also the question of what to do with Love and whether there will be an opportunity for him to start a Test at No 10 and prove he can handle the play-making demands of international rugby as well as he does for the Hurricanes.

He’s been impressive in Super Rugby orchestrating the competition’s best backline and most definitely earned a chance to audition for the All Blacks role.
The Test against Italy in Wellington feels like it would be the right one to try to answer that question. McKenzie’s likely fate is to play off the bench for most of this year.
Rennie may not have got his wish of an exemption for Mo’unga, but the upside of the rejection is that it has put real pressure on all his various aspiring play-makers to perform.
Opportunities will be limited for Barrett, Love and McKenzie, and they will know that Rennie has an open mind on selection and will be swayed by form more than reputation.
To add to the pressure, for the first seven Tests of the year, the spectre of Mo’unga will be looming in the distance.
There is no doubt that Rennie would have preferred it if Mo’unga had been made available for the Greatest Rivalry series, but the situation may yet play to his advantage
The ABs don’t have depth at 10. BB is clearly past his best. DMac is another 15 convert who has played well but always looks uncomfortable against the Boks. Love is playing brilliantly but has only played one test at 10 against Wales. He is a player that must be given an opportunity to prove himself this winter. But he does not represent depth at 10. Only Mo’unga is the real deal at 10 - both talent and experience, including good wins against the Boks. Crazy not to pick him to travel to SA in August. The ABs are literally one injury (Love) away from mediocrity.

Not sure why all these people are living in the past and expect the ABs to grow by looking backwards. Mo’unga may prove to be the best 10 in NZ, but he needs to prove it because he’s been away for so long. It amazes me how players who leave seem to grow in skills and ability that they didn’t have when they played in NZ. Sure RM did some really good things, but he also made a lot of mistakes that gave the ball to the opposition. Saying he needs to prove himself in the NPC is the correct thing to do. While the Boks have done well with bringing players back from overseas, the reality for them is that their home competition and economy is so awful they have to because they can’t afford their top players to stay in SA.
For me NZR is doing the ABs a huge service in retaining the policy and keeping the best players in NZ. Sure there are a lot going off shore but for the most part they are fringe players or ones who have realised that they aren’t likely to get selected and so are off to capitalise on their ability to earn for their families before they get too old. Good on them.

You don’t need to make examples like these. The logic is simple, we want people to sign up to be a part of New Zealand rugby, not just play for the All Blacks. To do this representing the All Blacks is used as a bargaining chip. It’s as simple as that, that’s all you need to know as to why rules like this are enforced.
NZR feels that for the All Blacks to be strong, NZ rugby needs to be strong.

No, that is incorrect. He is one could be granted.
And it is a big “if” at this stage. Would a 10 need to go down, do they include 5 10s in the squad to help this? Or could they leave a 10 spot open by only picking three (mine are DMac Love Reihana) and whenever an injury happens in another positional group, bring Mounga in like how SA replaced a WPOTY hooker with Pollard? Might that also be seen as circumventing the eligibility laws and be denied?
What we know %100 is that Rennie obviously had no concern with the long term strength of the All Blacks, so it is NZRs job to ensure he has to look to the future by planning to use another 10, instead of Mounga.

The one other thing I would say in all this is please dear god pick Rueben Love at 10 and back him as that, thoroughly, absolutely and even when Mo'unga comes back. Don't bail on him like Robertson did with McKenzie, of Foster did with Mo'unga, or delay then dump him in the deep end in RWC year like Hansen did with Mo'unga. All for the benefit of you know who.
Rueben Love has the potential to be world's best 10, year in year, year out, the dominant 10 of his generation. I've never thought that about Mo'unga, though he's always been one of the top three, and occasionally the best, without ever being dominant. No team in the world is more dependent on having a top tier 10. Hopefully the collection of old men in the selection panel will choose out of hope, not fear. Going back to Barrett would be nothing more than weakness.

Obsession in NZ with the veteran savior
Always the same articles for months now… honestly, I can’t wait for early July so we can finally get a clear idea of what Rennie and his staff actually want to do.
What really annoys me is that people keep praising Beauden Barrett for for his consistency (right now it’s worthy of Stevie Wonder). In reality, we simply haven’t seen… and haven’t seen for quite some time now. Go back and watch his 2025 matches. They’re full of all kinds of mistakes. And this year with the Blues, it’s even worse!
All of this is getting really tiresome…
On top of that, all these articles act as if Rennie is inevitably going to continue what the previous coaches — Foster and Razor — were doing. But the truth is that journalists, pundits, and former players know absolutely nothing about that. They’re not inside their heads and conversations of Rennie, Henry, Barnes, or Blair…
First, we need to wait for this initial squad announcement.
In my opinion, there will be some surprises.

It's time for the era of Love to begin. He's the best suited to break down international defenses.
He can run, but his point of difference is his pass - his speed and accuracy of pass put him well above BB and RM and it gives other players exceptional depth to attack from. It's no wonder his outsides score so many points. Dmac is the next best, but he also loads his passes before throwing them. Love can reel off an exceptionally fast and accurate pass on the move which is a deadly skill in a rush d world.

More fairy stories about Beauden "Golden Boy" Barrett at 10. That Gregor Paul can only come up with a 2018 Bledisloe as a great performance by Barrett, a game eight years ago against a struggler, is indicative of just how relentlessly mediocre he has been at 10 since the AB's magic carpet ride ended in 2016.
Don't mean to bore everyone with something as inconvenient as history, but I'll give it my thousandth go.
Barrett struggled in the first real challenges in the 2016-2019 cycle, the loss to Ireland in 2016, then the 2017 Lions series, and was eventually dropped by Hansen from 10 in RWC year 2019. Because of Hansen's obsession with Barrett, Mo'unga's had only one game at 10 against a Tier 1 opponent until 2019. Instead of being transitioned in 2017-2018 Mo'unga was dumped in the deep end in a world cup year in the AB's most important position, and was further gimped by Hansen/Foster insisting on the dual playmaker structure, the first real sign of the extreme privilege that has defined Barrett's AB career.
Mo'unga was retained by Foster until 2021, when he was dropped at the end of TRC for Barrett. Barrett then failed in his next major test, an away game in SA [He's none from two in away games against SA since 2018] and then again in the test series against Ireland in 2022. He then failed again in the first test against SA, and was dropped, again, when Foster saw he was about to get chopped himself. After Mo'unga was reinstated at 10 and led the AB's to victory in the second test, Foster was kept until 2023. Because he finally dumped Barrett at 10.
This is where its gets interesting. End of 2022 Barrett advised NZR he was probably playing offshore after RWC 2023, and therefore would not be eligible for the AB's. NZR replied with an offer that he could play in offshore 2024 and 2025 and still be eligible for the AB's in both those years. Barrett was again going to be privileged, this time to an extreme degree, becoming NZ's first multi-season offshore player eligible for the AB's. That proposal failed to get past the SRP clubs, but the NZR's drive to privilege Barrett was clear.
In the wake of that NZR created farce, which the media initially Barrett blamed for, Mo'unga signed for 3 years for Toshiba in Japan December 2022. It would be fascinating to know what sort of offer NZR made to Mo'unga, and if he was offered a year offshore as part of a new deal. Given he was well below the number of tests players are usually at when they are given that exemption it's entirely possible that they refused that, assumed he would stay, tried to cover themselves again with golden boy, and in the process drove Mo'unga overseas. At the very least Mo'unga had a very clear message that whatever value he had to NZR, Barrett had much, much more. That Mo'unga signed a three year offshore contract in 2022 was certainly a sign of his alienation.
McKenzie was the one who then had his career at 10 badly damaged by the colossal favouritism shown to Barrett. With Mo'unga going, Robertson panicked at the end of 2023, insisted that NZR retain him. In an act of insanity Barrett was given a four year contract with an immediate offshore exemption, with Robertson looking at Barrett as a 10 despite his repeated failures, undermining McKenzie in the same way as Mo'unga was.
Robertson gave McKenzie less than a full year as starting AB 10, panicked again at the end of 2024, put golden boy back to 10, who again failed immediately against top quality opponents. As he almost always does. Against England end of 2024 the AB's were down 22-10 with 14 minutes to go. Barrett went off injured, McKenzie came on at 10, rescued the game, the AB's winning 24-22 because of him. McKenzie then got MOM against Ireland the next week when Barrett was injured, and the best win of Robertson's era.
Barrett was restored against France, given yet another chance when others never are. When McKenzie came on at 52 minutes the AB's are again down, 17-24, and listless. McKenzie sparked another revival, kicked 4 penalties, almost got the AB's the win, a win that probably would have occurred had they pulled Barrett off at the same time and put McKenzie to 10. Robertson still didn't get the message, kept Barrett at 10 in 2025, and signed his own death warrant.
Beauden Barrett's win rate against top tier opponents when starting at 10 is abysmal. Against the Lions, South Africa under Erasmus, so post 2018, France in France post 2019, England 2016 to 2019 then in England after that, Ireland post 2015, Argentina post 2019, he is running at 11 from 26, so 42%. I haven't included McKenzie's win against England 2024 because they won that game because Barrett went off. Against the same teams in the same time frames when the AB’s have not had Barrett at 10 they have won 13 from 23, so 57%.
The situation with Barrett has become increasingly bizarre. Love is now in line to be the next one mistreated by the obsession with Beauden Barrett at 10. Barrett has failed three times as the AB's first choice 10, and is hopefully about to be dropped for the third time. All this failure is still being presented as a form dip by the media. It isn't. Class is not permanent, and Barrett has never had any at 10 against top tier opponents. Will Rennie be the fourth AB's coach in a row to risk or cause his own destruction because he refuses to accept that? We will see.

Thanks for this history lesson, it puts things into perspective. What especially irks me is that DMac was repeatedly snubbed for Barret even after bailing out Razor so many times.
I’m from Taranaki, saw Barrett play as a schoolboy, think he is one of the best 15s or 23s to have ever played. But he isn’t a natural 10 and has been going backwards for a long time now. he’s got very little left to offer and the fact that Mounga will be in the country, under contract and still unable to be picked for the SA tour is ridiculous

It was more Havili that had the Mom performance in that SA test, but I think a hint of change in Mounga then.
NZR only had to go after Barrett because Mounga signed offshore when he was still kinda struggling as an AB. You can’t really fault them for that. Oh yes you’re splitting up the two attempts to sign BB, righto. Again though, can’t really critize NZRs recruitment when it’s the AB coaches that have selected him.
Real issue is that someone got into Razors head and BB stopped being the filler or glue guy for the team, and instead was entrusted first with the starting full back spot, then the starting 10 spot.
Something caused a drastic change to Razors outlook. Well I say drastic but it could have taken months to happen.
NZR have stated that Mounga doesn’t qualify, and it was even broached, or asked for. Again, Mounga wasn’t the same guy you saw in 2023 at this point, so why would either party even consider it?
Otherwise - and you basically went on to explain my points anyway - full agree with your synopsis.

I bet you Jacko doesn't agree with this. He is the number one apologist for BB closely followed by Gregor who seems to have forgotten his last years statement that BB had locked in the number 10 spot for the RWC .
Gregor is described as NZ Rugby's formost analyst. It just shows the paucity of the NZ Rugby media that a person so described could call a 34 year old number 10 a selection lock over two years out from a RWC.

100% agreed and I have been spouting this for years. BB is the most overrated and protected player I have ever seen. An absolute myth. Even the Blues only recent title came when BB was away. He hampers ever team he plays for but the fanboys point the finger everywhere but where it belongs.

Love was good again lastnite not without fault threw an errant pass near the end kicked a penalty dead missed a couple of albeit difficult conversions and tackled nothing on Tavatavanawai try but with that all being said he was good again nothing like consistency with a flash of a double right foot step to reinforce your claim I reckon and if all goes well and with Richie Mo coming back to town and with Dmac still doing his thing and Beaudy still capable of a big game 10 no worries for 27 go 1 number down and after Cam that’s very hazy imo

The ABs don’t have depth at 10. BB is clearly past his best. DMac is another 15 convert who has played well but always looks uncomfortable against the Boks. Love is playing brilliantly but has only played one test at 10 against Wales. He is a player that must be given an opportunity to prove himself this winter. But he does not represent depth at 10. Only Mo’unga is the real deal at 10 - both talent and experience, including good wins against the Boks. Crazy not to pick him to travel to SA in August. The ABs are literally one injury (Love) away from mediocrity.

Not sure why all these people are living in the past and expect the ABs to grow by looking backwards. Mo’unga may prove to be the best 10 in NZ, but he needs to prove it because he’s been away for so long. It amazes me how players who leave seem to grow in skills and ability that they didn’t have when they played in NZ. Sure RM did some really good things, but he also made a lot of mistakes that gave the ball to the opposition. Saying he needs to prove himself in the NPC is the correct thing to do. While the Boks have done well with bringing players back from overseas, the reality for them is that their home competition and economy is so awful they have to because they can’t afford their top players to stay in SA.
For me NZR is doing the ABs a huge service in retaining the policy and keeping the best players in NZ. Sure there are a lot going off shore but for the most part they are fringe players or ones who have realised that they aren’t likely to get selected and so are off to capitalise on their ability to earn for their families before they get too old. Good on them.
You don’t need to make examples like these. The logic is simple, we want people to sign up to be a part of New Zealand rugby, not just play for the All Blacks. To do this representing the All Blacks is used as a bargaining chip. It’s as simple as that, that’s all you need to know as to why rules like this are enforced.

And it is a big “if” at this stage. Would a 10 need to go down, do they include 5 10s in the squad to help this? Or could they leave a 10 spot open by only picking three (mine are DMac Love Reihana) and whenever an injury happens in another positional group, bring Mounga in like how SA replaced a WPOTY hooker with Pollard? Might that also be seen as circumventing the eligibility laws and be denied?
What we know %100 is that Rennie obviously had no concern with the long term strength of the All Blacks, so it is NZRs job to ensure he has to look to the future by planning to use another 10, instead of Mounga.

It started to feel like that in the republic at the depth of the trough under Alistair Coetzee. Getting the boks to winning ways has reignited players ambitions to become springboks.
NZ is delusional if they think they can continue with their isolationist player policy (only picking players who play in NZ).
Your NPC is no longer the elite comp it once was. It has become devalued due to South Africa leaving and more and more players opting to go overseas …and it’s only going to get worse as foreign comps attract more of your best players. CRAZY to think that NZ has been the master of their own demise. I’m picking Sth Africa 4-0 and the kiwis to finish at best 3rd or 4th in the Nations championship.
Like France? England? Ireland? 4 of top 5 nations have the same policy. Should they ALL change or just NZ? NPC never ever inc SA.
The insecurity of New Zealand in whether they have “cattle” is telling. Such small minded bickering about one position and player must leave all Kiwis sleepless at night
The one other thing I would say in all this is please dear god pick Rueben Love at 10 and back him as that, thoroughly, absolutely and even when Mo'unga comes back. Don't bail on him like Robertson did with McKenzie, of Foster did with Mo'unga, or delay then dump him in the deep end in RWC year like Hansen did with Mo'unga. All for the benefit of you know who.
Rueben Love has the potential to be world's best 10, year in year, year out, the dominant 10 of his generation. I've never thought that about Mo'unga, though he's always been one of the top three, and occasionally the best, without ever being dominant. No team in the world is more dependent on having a top tier 10. Hopefully the collection of old men in the selection panel will choose out of hope, not fear. Going back to Barrett would be nothing more than weakness.
I can’t believe BBs drop in form. So quick. I’m hoping Love gets the 10 keys against France.

Obsession in NZ with the veteran savior
Always the same articles for months now… honestly, I can’t wait for early July so we can finally get a clear idea of what Rennie and his staff actually want to do.
What really annoys me is that people keep praising Beauden Barrett for for his consistency (right now it’s worthy of Stevie Wonder). In reality, we simply haven’t seen… and haven’t seen for quite some time now. Go back and watch his 2025 matches. They’re full of all kinds of mistakes. And this year with the Blues, it’s even worse!
All of this is getting really tiresome…
On top of that, all these articles act as if Rennie is inevitably going to continue what the previous coaches — Foster and Razor — were doing. But the truth is that journalists, pundits, and former players know absolutely nothing about that. They’re not inside their heads and conversations of Rennie, Henry, Barnes, or Blair…
First, we need to wait for this initial squad announcement.

It's time for the era of Love to begin. He's the best suited to break down international defenses.
He can run, but his point of difference is his pass - his speed and accuracy of pass put him well above BB and RM and it gives other players exceptional depth to attack from. It's no wonder his outsides score so many points. Dmac is the next best, but he also loads his passes before throwing them. Love can reel off an exceptionally fast and accurate pass on the move which is a deadly skill in a rush d world.
DMac has been really loading recently has he. Firing them out, now idea where they could be go (runners hitting them well too).
Though to be fair RM has the same ability to pass on the run, howevever, i think it’s time to give Love an extended run as the AB's playmaker.
Come on! BBARRETT hasn’t played well for a few season’s mind you his manager will tell you hes trying not to get injured before the world cup… yea right. Cant even get another contract in Japan!
More fairy stories about Beauden "Golden Boy" Barrett at 10. That Gregor Paul can only come up with a 2018 Bledisloe as a great performance by Barrett, a game eight years ago against a struggler, is indicative of just how relentlessly mediocre he has been at 10 since the AB's magic carpet ride ended in 2016.
Don't mean to bore everyone with something as inconvenient as history, but I'll give it my thousandth go.
Barrett struggled in the first real challenges in the 2016-2019 cycle, the loss to Ireland in 2016, then the 2017 Lions series, and was eventually dropped by Hansen from 10 in RWC year 2019. Because of Hansen's obsession with Barrett, Mo'unga's had only one game at 10 against a Tier 1 opponent until 2019. Instead of being transitioned in 2017-2018 Mo'unga was dumped in the deep end in a world cup year in the AB's most important position, and was further gimped by Hansen/Foster insisting on the dual playmaker structure, the first real sign of the extreme privilege that has defined Barrett's AB career.
Mo'unga was retained by Foster until 2021, when he was dropped at the end of TRC for Barrett. Barrett then failed in his next major test, an away game in SA [He's none from two in away games against SA since 2018] and then again in the test series against Ireland in 2022. He then failed again in the first test against SA, and was dropped, again, when Foster saw he was about to get chopped himself. After Mo'unga was reinstated at 10 and led the AB's to victory in the second test, Foster was kept until 2023. Because he finally dumped Barrett at 10.
This is where its gets interesting. End of 2022 Barrett advised NZR he was probably playing offshore after RWC 2023, and therefore would not be eligible for the AB's. NZR replied with an offer that he could play in offshore 2024 and 2025 and still be eligible for the AB's in both those years. Barrett was again going to be privileged, this time to an extreme degree, becoming NZ's first multi-season offshore player eligible for the AB's. That proposal failed to get past the SRP clubs, but the NZR's drive to privilege Barrett was clear.
In the wake of that NZR created farce, which the media initially Barrett blamed for, Mo'unga signed for 3 years for Toshiba in Japan December 2022. It would be fascinating to know what sort of offer NZR made to Mo'unga, and if he was offered a year offshore as part of a new deal. Given he was well below the number of tests players are usually at when they are given that exemption it's entirely possible that they refused that, assumed he would stay, tried to cover themselves again with golden boy, and in the process drove Mo'unga overseas. At the very least Mo'unga had a very clear message that whatever value he had to NZR, Barrett had much, much more. That Mo'unga signed a three year offshore contract in 2022 was certainly a sign of his alienation.
McKenzie was the one who then had his career at 10 badly damaged by the colossal favouritism shown to Barrett. With Mo'unga going, Robertson panicked at the end of 2023, insisted that NZR retain him. In an act of insanity Barrett was given a four year contract with an immediate offshore exemption, with Robertson looking at Barrett as a 10 despite his repeated failures, undermining McKenzie in the same way as Mo'unga was.
Robertson gave McKenzie less than a full year as starting AB 10, panicked again at the end of 2024, put golden boy back to 10, who again failed immediately against top quality opponents. As he almost always does. Against England end of 2024 the AB's were down 22-10 with 14 minutes to go. Barrett went off injured, McKenzie came on at 10, rescued the game, the AB's winning 24-22 because of him. McKenzie then got MOM against Ireland the next week when Barrett was injured, and the best win of Robertson's era.
Barrett was restored against France, given yet another chance when others never are. When McKenzie came on at 52 minutes the AB's are again down, 17-24, and listless. McKenzie sparked another revival, kicked 4 penalties, almost got the AB's the win, a win that probably would have occurred had they pulled Barrett off at the same time and put McKenzie to 10. Robertson still didn't get the message, kept Barrett at 10 in 2025, and signed his own death warrant.
Beauden Barrett's win rate against top tier opponents when starting at 10 is abysmal. Against the Lions, South Africa under Erasmus, so post 2018, France in France post 2019, England 2016 to 2019 then in England after that, Ireland post 2015, Argentina post 2019, he is running at 11 from 26, so 42%. I haven't included McKenzie's win against England 2024 because they won that game because Barrett went off. Against the same teams in the same time frames when the AB’s have not had Barrett at 10 they have won 13 from 23, so 57%.
The situation with Barrett has become increasingly bizarre. Love is now in line to be the next one mistreated by the obsession with Beauden Barrett at 10. Barrett has failed three times as the AB's first choice 10, and is hopefully about to be dropped for the third time. All this failure is still being presented as a form dip by the media. It isn't. Class is not permanent, and Barrett has never had any at 10 against top tier opponents. Will Rennie be the fourth AB's coach in a row to risk or cause his own destruction because he refuses to accept that? We will see.
Thanks for this history lesson, it puts things into perspective. What especially irks me is that DMac was repeatedly snubbed for Barret even after bailing out Razor so many times.
I’m from Taranaki, saw Barrett play as a schoolboy, think he is one of the best 15s or 23s to have ever played. But he isn’t a natural 10 and has been going backwards for a long time now. he’s got very little left to offer and the fact that Mounga will be in the country, under contract and still unable to be picked for the SA tour is ridiculous
It was more Havili that had the Mom performance in that SA test, but I think a hint of change in Mounga then.
NZR only had to go after Barrett because Mounga signed offshore when he was still kinda struggling as an AB. You can’t really fault them for that. Oh yes you’re splitting up the two attempts to sign BB, righto. Again though, can’t really critize NZRs recruitment when it’s the AB coaches that have selected him.
Real issue is that someone got into Razors head and BB stopped being the filler or glue guy for the team, and instead was entrusted first with the starting full back spot, then the starting 10 spot.
Something caused a drastic change to Razors outlook. Well I say drastic but it could have taken months to happen.
NZR have stated that Mounga doesn’t qualify, and it was even broached, or asked for. Again, Mounga wasn’t the same guy you saw in 2023 at this point, so why would either party even consider it?

I bet you Jacko doesn't agree with this. He is the number one apologist for BB closely followed by Gregor who seems to have forgotten his last years statement that BB had locked in the number 10 spot for the RWC .
Gregor is described as NZ Rugby's formost analyst. It just shows the paucity of the NZ Rugby media that a person so described could call a 34 year old number 10 a selection lock over two years out from a RWC.

I was amazed that DMac wasn't kept on after the Ireland game.
BB was world player of the year 2016/17. Not so much struggled as was peak of his powers.
He’s sucked for ages now though.
100% agreed and I have been spouting this for years. BB is the most overrated and protected player I have ever seen. An absolute myth. Even the Blues only recent title came when BB was away. He hampers ever team he plays for but the fanboys point the finger everywhere but where it belongs.
Love was good again lastnite not without fault threw an errant pass near the end kicked a penalty dead missed a couple of albeit difficult conversions and tackled nothing on Tavatavanawai try but with that all being said he was good again nothing like consistency with a flash of a double right foot step to reinforce your claim I reckon and if all goes well and with Richie Mo coming back to town and with Dmac still doing his thing and Beaudy still capable of a big game 10 no worries for 27 go 1 number down and after Cam that’s very hazy imo
