'He's a fighter' – Johann van Graan on England discard Ben Spencer

Johann van Graan has responded to Ben Spencer’s England snub by insisting his star scrum-half and captain will not take the disappointment lying down.

Having waited well over four years to add to the four England caps he won between 2018-19, the 32-year-old worked his way into Steve Borthwick’s plans at the start of this year and played in the Calcutta Cup defeat to Scotland at Murrayfield.

Spencer then appeared off the bench in the 16-15 first Test defeat to New Zealand this July before being handed his first international start against the All Blacks at the start of the Autumn Nations Series.

The former Saracens man took the opportunity handed to him because of Alex Mitchell’s neck injury and retained his place for the Australia defeat a week later.

However, Spencer was deemed surplus to requirements and jettisoned from the matchday 23 altogether for the next two Tests, against South Africa and Fiji, with Jack van Poortvliet and Harry Randall preferred instead, despite neither covering themselves in glory.

Given he’s not played for the last two weeks it seems highly likely that Spencer will be welcomed straight back into the Bath team for this Saturday’s Gallagher Premiership tea-time kick-off at home to Exeter.

“He was disappointed but I think he has handled himself really well, really professionally,” van Graan told the media today.

“England matters to him. I thought he played really well in the first two Test matches.

“But I am not going to comment on England selection, that’s Steve’s decision and whatever decisions he makes, he makes.

“I am looking forward to having Ben back, he is our club captain and has been in incredible form for us for the last two-and-a-half-seasons.

“What I would say is Ben is a fighter and it is very important for him to play international rugby.

“He loved his two starts against the All Blacks and the Wallabies.”

Whilst Spencer’s return to the Bath XV looks nailed on, a collaborative decision will be made between club and country and coach and player regarding other internationals such as England pair Ollie Lawrence and Will Stuart, who featured more prominently over the Autumn.

“Every player is available for the weekend should I wish to choose (them),” van Graan confirmed.

I predict both Spencer and Lawrence will shine again for Bath in the coming weeks. The reason? They will both be managed and directed on the pitch by Finn Russell.

Ben Spencer played Mitchell off the park in the prem final and had Bath not had player sent off would have won .

On form alone he should be the no 1 .

Very shabby treatment by Borthwick. Very poor player management .

Make your mind up Borthwick and stop chopping and changing and give the team a chance.

'Razor's conservatism is in danger of halting New Zealand's progress'

I really dont know what the problem is Nick. Cane was immense this year and no one below him demanded the job. TJ perhaps less so but he was always going to start the season at 9 anyway due to the thing they call experience. I think guys like Lakai will have learnt a lot from the likes of Cane and Ill garrantee TJ has helped the Roigard/Ratima/Hothem settle in to their roles much better than they would have had there been no experience around. At the start of 2024 these guys had 3 tests between them. Im glad TJ was around.

The biggest fail area from my pov is centre. Razors lack of desire to change what is clearly failing is a worry. Is he waiting for a full year of SR? Is he not sure? I dont know the answer of course but He fiddled where he shouldnt have and didnt touch the area he should have. WJ at 15 is an experiment. Its not a clear decision yet either. WJ is an amazing attacking player. He isnt an amazing kicker or an amazing decision maker.

The 10 position is being handled very badly too. Its Dmac but BB is constantly in there, Its BB but no 15 to back that up or its no one. GET RID of the centre pairing and get Love in at 15. The backs will function way better. All the players get their SR backs working far better than Razor has gotten, and with no dedicated backs coach in the ABs its a clear problem area.

Also this comparing SA with NZ when 1 side is retaining all their stars and the other side has had some major changes isnt a apples with apples comparison. Imagine comparing a F1 racing team where 1 team was 100% settled and the other was brand new....Just not a comparison worth doing as it proves nothing other than the blatently obvious.
