The two-time Women’s Rugby World Cup winner joined the West Country side in 2022 from Worcester Warriors. Since then the 32-year-old has been a major figure in the Circus’ dramatic turnaround in domestic form, which has seen the club claim three consecutive PWR titles in a row.

Currently the West Country side top PWR, have claimed 14 wins, 14 try-scoring bonus points and have already secured a home semi-final berth this term.

Dan Murphy, Gloucester Hartpury Head of Rugby, said: “Alex is a hugely influential player or us and someone who consistently sets the standard in both training and matches.

“Her experience at the very highest level, combined with the physicality and skillset she brings, makes her a key part of this squad.

“She’s been central to the success we’ve had over the past few seasons, and we’re really pleased that she’s committed her future to the club.”

Matthews made her England debut as an 18-year-old in 2011. A Hartpury College and Roehampton University graduate, the 32-year-old won the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2014 before gaining a professional contract with England Sevens. She represented Great Britain at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games.

Last year she scored two tries for the Red Roses in the Women’s Rugby World Cup final and was named England vice-captain ahead of this year’s Guinness Women’s Six Nations. Matthews played in England’s 33-12 in Round 1, but has missed clashes with Scotland and Wales with a shoulder injury.

Alex Matthews said: “I’m really pleased to have extended my time with Gloucester Hartpury. We’ve built something really special here over the past few years, and it’s a group I love being a part of. I’m excited to keep pushing, developing my game, and creating more success with this team.”
