John Smit makes huge all-time Malcolm Marx claim ahead of All Blacks finale

Former South Africa captain John Smit has declared Malcolm Marx not only the best player in the world, but the greatest hooker to have ever played for the Springboks.

Marx was again influential in South Africa’s latest win over the All Blacks, producing a near-complete display in the 29-24 victory in Johannesburg. His lineout throwing was faultless, he won a crucial breakdown penalty and scored off a driving maul late on as the world champions opened up a 2-1 lead in the four-match series against New Zealand.

The 32-year-old has become one of the defining figures of this Springbok era, and Smit, himself a World Cup-winning hooker, believes Marx now stands above every South African to have previously worn the jersey.

Discussing the 92-cap hooker’s qualities on his I Love Rugby podcast, Smit also highlighted the breadth of Marx’s game, from his carrying and scrummaging to his work over the ball, before pointing to the influence he has on those around him.

For Smit, that combination of ability and character is what sets Marx apart, leaving him convinced there are “no real chinks in the armour”.

“I think there’s so much that I can say because Malcolm obviously played in that number two shirt, and there’s a couple of things about Malcolm that make him the best in the world,” Smit said. “Certainly the best that’s worn the number two shirt in South Africa, and I say that quite respectfully and quite gladly. I’ve just loved watching him play. I’ve loved what he can do for South Africa.

“But there’s a deeper reason. He’s a beast. I mean, he’s a monstrous man. He’s a big guy. He’s athletic. He’s fast. He carries well. He steals. He scrums. He’s got an unbelievable throw. There’s no real chinks in the armour.

“And I think what people don’t understand is, over and above that, we’ve all played with some amazing rugby players, and he’s a better human being than he is a rugby player. He’s just such a good guy. He’s good for the team. He’s the kind of guy that gets in there and serves. He’s serving the guys all the time. He’s providing a level of confidence.

“And then probably his first Test was the quietest we’ve seen him because he hadn’t played a bit for a while. I think he took that to heart and he just got better and better and better. His influence, it’s not just the things he does.

“And I think the last thing I’ll say about Malcolm, which I think we’d all love people to say about us as ex-rugby players, is that he must be the bane of existence for every opposition team that play against him. But I don’t think there’s one person in world rugby that doesn’t like him as a human afterwards, that can’t wait to have a beer with him. And I think that says a lot about the guy.”

when it comes to best hookers ever I think of Fitzpatrick, Coles, Mealamu, Bismarck, possibly Woods, possibly Smit as an all-round package (leadership & playing prop too etc). I like Dan Sheehan as well….could end up being a great by the end of his career.

Maybe i’m biased but Marx has the most impact out of all of them. Would probably start Marx and have prime Dane Coles from the bench in an All-Time 15/23.

The dangers of not only a third world education -but how CTE left untreated - can make you a Bok Supporter.

Well, Marx is easily better than John Smit for a start. Fractionally better than Bismarck who was an absolute beast too. Uli Schmidt would be next best off the Bok list. Certainly that illegal tour-ending hit on Savea by Marx in 3rd Test showed his nasty side too, it was disgraceful.

I don’t think the hit on Ardi was much of a hit at all. I watched it over and over and it really wasn’t a cheap shot.

Always frustrates me that Jake White chose John Smith as captain before choosing a team, in my opinion he didn’t deserve his place, especially at the start. If they gave Lukas Van Biljon more game time he could have been a legend, he had similar attributes to Marx. But Marx is no.1 for sure, maybe Keith Woods second.

I always chose my captain first - of course he had to be an exceptional player but as Rassie says not necessarily the best player - the right player for the team. For example Joost was a disaster as a captain.

As a pretty one eyed ABs fan I've always considered Fitzy to be the best hooker ever. But I'm now willing to put Marx in my all time XV at hooker.

That says a lot! I’ve always considered Fitzie in the top 3 of all time…he just had this Steve Waugh mental edge thing going whilst being a world class player & leader of men. I now too consider Marx at the top of the pile.

Has to be nailed on for back-to-back World Rugby Player for the year.

He deserved it last year but has been even better this year

Actually not so far off…. Best hooker! Yeah I can imagine that. Particularly in the past 2-3ish years.

Best hooker indeed. Do you know a few?

On his way to 100 - and quite probably more than 111 - test caps, he’ll certainly be regarded as the best hooker in SA history.

What a player.

he’s only 32 and on 92 caps currently, so if he stays injury free & on his current trajectory, he should easily surpass 111. I feel he is already the best hooker in SA history & the next year or two will cement his place as best ever period.

And best hooker of all time?

There’s a case for Mealamu as he played more and won more, but I’m not certain he impacted games in the same way Marx does. There’s also a case for Keith Woods, who did have a massive impact, but did so over a pretty short (58 caps in 9 years) career playing for what was then a pretty mediocre team.

Why South Africa's ‘scrum dominance’ gospel is spreading around the world

I think it was pretty much the top Bok team in the RGR PMcD. Snyman and Kwagga the only regular forwards missing from the Bok squad over the last 24 months. By the same token the ABs did not have Scott B or Tamaiti Williams (or Brodie or Frizzell - though they were not regulars in 2024/2025). But I agree that the gap between the ABs and this top Bok pack is significant at the scrum. And while I agree with NB that the penalty fest is “stoopid”, the ABs can’t expect to win the WC with a deficient pack. However, the combination of a back five of Scott B, Holland, Vaa’i, Lakai and Sititi has already clearly improved the power IMO. You may have also noted that the ABs had about a 45% continuity rate through the RGR in the forwards while the Boks had the same forward units from test 2 - 4. If Rennie is worth his salt, he will give this back five at least two of the NC games (Scotland and England), alongside EDG, Taylor and Newell, to continue to build cohesion and then have them play the NC final. Ditto with the impact pack - though I am undecided whether Numia or Bower, Tosi or Lomax -should be the LHP and THP.

Anyway back to your point, I think we saw the best Bok forward units in the RGR, and they are some distance ahead of the ABs. And no doubt they have plenty of room to get stronger. But I also think the ABs have significant room to improve, and are starting to do so.
