Daly eyes unexpected Lions Test spot

Elliot Daly admitted he had just about given up on playing for the British and Irish Lions in New Zealand, but he is ready for his chance against the All Blacks.

Daly, 24, produced an impressive performance on the left wing in the Lions’ 34-6 win over the Chiefs on Tuesday.

The 13-time England international’s display saw him put himself in a position to potentially be given a start for Saturday’s first Test.

Daly said he thought his chances of playing for the Lions were slim just six months ago, but he is ready to go.

“It would be amazing. At the start of the year I didn’t think I had a chance. If I got anywhere near it, it would be unbelievable,” he told UK newspapers.

“Whatever happens, happens. You’ve done as much as you can now and whoever gets selected we are going to get behind them.

“We’ve got training on Thursday and if you’re not in the team you’re going to try and push those who are to try and prepare them as best as possible for Saturday.”

The Lions scored four tries – the most they have managed on the tour so far – against the Chiefs.

Daly said he was happy with how creative the Lions were in their final tour match before the opening All Blacks clash.

“It’s not just about staying on the touchline and waiting for the ball to come to you, you have to go find it. That’s what we tried to do,” he said.

“I think we created a lot of chances in the second half, especially in that third quarter. It opened up for us and it’s probably the most open game we’ve had so far on tour.”
