Chiefs lure All Blacks XV prop back to Hamilton
The Chiefs have signed All Blacks XV prop Tevita Mafileo to a two-year deal, bringing the former Hurricanes big man back to the club in which he made his Super Rugby Pacific debut.
The 28-year-old played just one season in Hamilton before moving to the Hurricanes, where he made his name over seven seasons and made 11 appearances in this year’s title run.
The versatile front rower can play both sides of the scrum and spent much of 2025 in camp with the All Blacks, although he never debuted.
The move to Chiefs country will let Mafileo step out of the All Blacks prop logjam at the Hurricanes, where Tyrel Lomax, Pasilio Tosi, Xavier Numia and Siale Lauaki are the leading contenders for minutes, and have all worn the All Blacks jersey in 2026. Mafileo joins Newcastle recruit Pouri Rakete-Stones in leaving the Canes’ front-row stocks.
For the Chiefs, Mafileo’s arrival fortifies a front row unit that has lost Reuben O’Neill to the Western Force and Sione Ahio to La Rochelle.
Mafileo, one of New Zealand’s most respected scrummagers, said he is looking forward to seeing what he can achieve in Chiefs colours.
“It’s a big honour and a privilege to come back for the Chiefs. For me it’s a big opportunity to see what I can do for the next few years. I’m excited to get amongst it, and try and get to know the new boys and the old boys that are still there.”
Gallagher Chiefs Head Coach Jono Gibbes was thrilled to bring Mafileo back to FMG Stadium.
“There’s a lot of strong talent in Chiefs Country, and it’s great to see guys wanting to come back and play. Tevita brings an incredible knowledge of the game, strong work ethic and years of experience across the Super, NPC and All Blacks environments. It’s nice to have the chance to bring him back.”
