Rugby World Cup match official joins Test coaching team in shock switch
Referee Ben Whitehouse will hang up his whistle after taking charge of the Ospreys versus Dragons clash in the United Rugby Championship this Saturday, to take up a full-time role as a specialist coach with Wales.
Whitehouse, 36, will work closely with coaches and players around the principles of law, discipline, decision-making and communication as part of Steve Tandy’s coaching team.
“Ben’s had a big impact already in his work with us so far this year and it’s great to now make that a more formal role,” Tandy said.
“His knowledge of the game from his experience officiating, not only around the laws but also in terms of communication, is hugely beneficial and we’ll be working hard as a group to continue to build and improve in this area during the next phase of the Nations Championship in November.”
The son of former international referee, Nigel Whitehouse, Ben Whitehouse refereed in nine Tests, having made his debut at the highest level in 2015.
Most of his officiating career in more recent years was spent in the TMO hot seat, including RWC 2021 and RWC 2023.
In club rugby, Whitehouse went on to referee over 100 matches in the URC – only the third person in the competition’s history to reach the milestone.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time so far with Steve, the coaches and players. Rugby has been a huge part of my life since a young age and Wales means everything to me,” Whitehouse said.
WRU Director of Rugby and Elite Performance Dave Reddin added: “The creation of this role is part of our work to build a clear and aligned Welsh rugby DNA. The specialist technical, tactical and strategic expertise that Ben will continue to provide coaches and players is extremely valuable as we look to accelerate our development in all areas.”
