Ardie Savea doesn't need to return to Super Rugby in 2027

As long as Ardie Savea spends a few months playing in New Zealand next year, I don’t really care where it is.

I hate sabbaticals. I have never been able to fathom why we dilute Super Rugby by allowing All Blacks to play in Japan. When rugby in New Zealand continues to face a variety of challenges – and the All Blacks consistently underwhelm on the world stage – the welfare and happiness of a few elite players really is the least of my worries.

Savea’s stint in Japan is nearing its conclusion, but – as it stands – he doesn’t have anywhere to play Super Rugby next season, following news that Moana Pasifika is bowing out of the competition. That’s sad, but also a fair reflection of where things are at. The team’s continued participation in Super Rugby Pacific just wasn’t sustainable.

All of which leaves us with breathless questions about where will Ardie go now? Will he return to the Hurricanes? Could he be a Blue? I’d actually be happy for him to play for Oriental Rongotai.

I admire Daniel Carter for a few reasons, but one in particular was that he commuted from Auckland to play for the Crusaders. Folk outside of Auckland don’t have a huge regard for the city and those that live there. They view with suspicion those who head to the big smoke. Carter might have lived there, but at least he stayed in the red and black.

I have never warmed to seeing Beauden Barrett in a Blues jumper. I wasn’t even that stoked about Ricky Riccitelli wearing it. I wouldn’t burst into tears if Savea signed with the Blues, but I would look at him differently. Carter knew fans could cop the fact that life had taken him to Auckland, but they weren’t going to condone him playing against the Crusaders.

At the risk of stating the obvious, Savea doesn’t need to be playing Super Rugby to justify All Black selection. He wouldn’t be swanning around Japan if it did. But, really, he doesn’t. Savea, as has been said countless times, is his own man. At times, I’m sure that makes him difficult to manage. He follows his heart, which appears to be why he signed with Moana Pasifika in the first place. Equally, it’s also why he’s occasionally made noises about playing rugby league. Not because he loved the game, more because it was an avenue into representing Samoa.

Among the things Savea is loyal to is Oriental Rongotai. Am I seriously suggesting he sit out the 2027 Super season in favour of a prolonged stint in Wellington club rugby? Probably not. But I am pointing out that it actually doesn’t matter where he plays Super Rugby next year or, indeed, if he plays it at all.

Related

We probably all assume next year will be his last in an All Blacks jumper. Who knows where he’ll end up after the next Rugby World Cup. But it feels safe to say he hasn’t always loved being employed by New Zealand Rugby or has never entertained the idea of signing somewhere else. As I say, he’s a man of strong convictions. Strong enough to say he wants to play for Ories next year? We’ll see.

Dane Coles, of course, was desperate to play for his home province – Horowhenua Kapiti – towards the end of his career, but his employers wouldn’t accede to that request. Rightly or wrongly, Savea’s status is slightly higher than that of Coles, and I definitely wouldn’t be shocked to see him have some kind of swansong at the Polo Grounds.

I understand Moana Pasifika’s demise. I’m disappointed by it, but I see the reasons. Just as I see that performances in Super Rugby haven’t been a prerequisite for All Black selection for a long time now. On that score, we don’t actually need to see Savea back with a franchise next season.

With the Stormers - obviously.

Honestly given the way the game’s been going, with the Northern Hemisphere closing the gap more than they have ever before, they should rebrand some of them as “excursions” and encourage more players to do a season at a time away in Europe after they’ve played a season or two in the black jersey. Get them some more money, soak up some IP from overseas and bring it back to our competitions. Japan is good financially but I’m still skeptical on the overall benefit for the players from a developmental perspective.

Interesting moment - if I were Toulon, I’d consider giving Ardie a lucrative 3 or 4 year contract to walk away from NZR and it would be an interesting option to see if he goes for a guaranteed final 3 seasons, or he takes a risk chasing RWC 2027.

Ollivon, Savea and Shioshvili as a third line would be class.

Huh, you mean 2031?

He’s contracted till next yeah now, basically on sabbactical, going to Toulon now wouldn’t interfere with 2027.

I think this could play into Dave Rennie’s hands quite well, given that Moana Pasifika is disbanded, he can ask to be able to consider overseas players through to RWC 2027 and then Richie, Brodie & Ardie can be considered for the SA tour and he builds his squad a little earlier, whilst not forcing a permanent change to selection.

That’s the perfect fudge that will get Dave Rennie what he wants and may actually help the AB’s in the process.

TBH I think Ardie would want to be playing for the Canes, he was already supposed to be he meant so much to Moana I think he just had to return (they probably knew their predicament, as he did, then).

In saying that, Ardie is like the SBW of this decade, he has such an appeal with the fans and is a huge money spinner too I’d imagine they allow him to just have another Sabbatical like Cane (in that they allowed him to finish on a sabbatical). I made that point already but if it wasn’t obvious (and why would it be reading the random thoughts of this author) I can totally see that exception being made, yes (not your idea as that obviously goes against what they want).

So, Super Rugby not doing as well as some people thought and the chaos of 40 odd players with nowhere to play will put downward pressure on wages and make the overseas contracts even more attractive.

Where have I seen something like this happen before. 🤔🤔🤔

It doesn’t really have anything to do with SR. I don’t know if it was COVID related but this team got absolutely no support from their community (after lockdown ended) for a couple of years. Its a very tricky and delicate situation (made so by NZR deciding to reject all bids and help setup the franchise themselves) but that initial hurdle was never really overcome. The league didn’t want 11 teams I don’t think and I’d expect this was the window initial funding ended and the Islands were supposed to take over. You also got the union blocking Moana from playing in AK.

Its funny because they did the exact same thing with the Sunwolves.

Ardie will be back in NZ later on if not sooner depending how Kobelco Kobe Steelers fare in the playoffs…

Dave knows how he’s currently performing and if there were any issues that he felt needed to be dealt with, so Ardie Savea will be in the 2026 AB’s squad as long as he's physically, mentally fit, healthy and injury free etc…

Jumping ahead to SRPacific 2027, ‘Canes assistant coach Jason Holland replaces Blues head coach Vern Cotter?!?

Wut?

How do you know what Ardies doing?

What’s with the obsession with Ardie? Great player - yes. But would losing his services wreak havoc for the ABs? NO. He’s not Dan Carter or Richie McCaw, both of whom were instrumental in winning the 2015 RWC. We have a long list of loosies who would do the job - not as well as Ardie yet - but worth developing and in fact there is an argument that they should be given the opportunity to step up - Lakai, Sititi, Dalton, Kirifi, Barnes, Segner, Flanders. And before the Ardie cheerleaders bang their drums, I am not saying we drop Ardie or that he should not be captain. But the ABs have the talent to move on if Ardie chooses to end he playing days cashing in overseas.

I wrote a pertinent and on topic comment saying the Blues should sign Miracle. It didn’t mention Ardie at all. It was taken down.

Either Ardie plays Super or he can bugger off. No ifs, buts, maybes.

What do you want him playing Super for?

I hate sabbaticals. I have never been able to fathom why we dilute Super Rugby by allowing All Blacks to play in Japan.

Cool opinion, perhaps the writer would prefer to see NZR struggle financially by paying huge salaries to players they can’t afford. The writing is on the wall for Kiwi players to be able to play anywhere but be selected for the All Blacks, particularly the best ones.

I could understand them going to FRA or the PREM for a season (they will learn something different to their game) but I am not convinced I have seen the evidence to say you come back a better International player after a season in Japan.

P
PMcD 27 days ago

I don’t recall Jerome Kaino suffering form issues whilst playing in FRA, in fact he may have come back a better player and more robust defender.

J
JW 27 days ago

I think he’d just prefer they bugger off, fair enough call he wants them eligible overseas. It’s his opinion, cool if that’s cool.

Bidwell with an article that uses paragraphs rather than sentences.

Blues should sign Miracle Fai’ilagi for next year.
