The NSW Waratahs have claimed their third win of the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season, holding on to beat Moana Pasifika 29-14 in Sydney. Rookie fullback Sid Harvey was among the standouts, crossing for two tries in the hard-fought triumph.

Melani Matavao was another difference-maker, with the scrum-half scoring two tries inside the first quarter of the contest. Moana took a two-point lead into the sheds despite being beaten in both the possession and territory battles.

Isaac Kailea powered over to give the Tahs the lead 12 minutes into the second half, before Harvey dove over in the corner later on. There was a lightning delay with about 10 minutes left, but the Tahs did enough to close out the contest once play resumed.

Super subs deliver

It’s hard to believe the British & Irish Lions tour of Australia was almost 12 months ago. There are a lot of performances that stand out from that Series, but the efforts of scrum-half Tate McDermott in Melbourne were especially memorable.

Following an injury to Harry Potter, McDermott lined up on the edge for more than 60 minutes. The Queenslander was actually fairly impressive in that performance, standing out as one of the Wallabies’ best across the three games overall.

Former Australia U20 captain Teddy Wilson, who is also usually a scrum-half, covered the wing during the first half against Moana. Wilson made one line-break with a strong carry along the left edge, before coming back on as a halfback during the second term.

Triston Reilly came on as a replacement for Lawson Creighton inside the opening 10 minutes, and the utility ended up scoring New South Wales’ first try of the contest. Reilly did go missing for periods, but those points were still crucial.

Isaac Kailea scored a try off the bench in the 51st minute, with the replacement front-row stepping up at the set-piece. In fact the efforts of the entire tight five late were huge, laying the foundations for Sid Harvey to score with about 10 to play.

Then, just before the full-time siren sounded, replacement hooker Folau Fainga’a had the final try-scoring say from a maul.

The moments that mattered for Moana

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s quickly taken corner against Barcelona in 2019 is one of the more iconic moments in recent Champions League history. It showed how brave decision-making can define sporting contests at the highest level.

While Moana Pasifika didn’t end up winning on Friday, two moments of quick-thinking magic had a game-changing impact during the opening 40. No. 9 Melani Matavao didn’t just keep Moana in the fight, but helped give the visitors every chance of a result.

The stats and scoreboard told two different stories during the first half. Moana had just 30 per cent of territory and 39 per cent of possession after 27 minutes, yet the visitors held a hard-earned two-point lead at Allianz Stadium.

Matavao returned from an injury spell in round 10 and was thrown right back into the starting side, with Jonathan Taumateine also back on the bench. The scrum-half opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a quick tap close to the try line.

Tahs halfback Jake Gordon came across in defence, but Matavao had too much momentum, reaching out to score to the right of the posts. With the successful conversion, Moana were off to a red-hot start at Allianz Stadium.

Glen Vaihu was shown a yellow card soon after, which saw Moana go down to 14 men for the next 10 minutes, and that ultimately led to points the other way. Triston Reilly hit back for the Tahs, but it didn’t take Moana long to take the lead back.

There was a sense of déjà vu when Matavao again thought to take a penalty quickly with a tap deep in the red zone. These moments stand out. It wasn’t to be for Moana in the end, but they’re able to stay in the fight as a result of their execution and decision-making.

Another reminder: Tahs have unearthed a gem

It seems to be a fairly popular talking point after each Waratahs game this season: how did Super Rugby Pacific rookie Sid Harvey go? At just 20 years of age, Harvey has stood out as a reliable member of an otherwise Wallabies back three.

Max Jorgensen was the form winger in the competition during the early rounds of the campaign, and Andrew Kellaway has also impressed in a series of starts. But Harvey, there was something different about this performance.

Harvey scored his maiden Super Rugby try against the Chiefs a fortnight ago, but it was otherwise a tough night for the fullback, with an error directly leading to a Kyren Taumoefolau try during the first half at FMG Stadium Waikato.

But Harvey bounced back in a big way on Friday, looking more like a Super Rugby Pacific veteran than a rookie who only debuted last month. The former Australia Sevens representative never looked rushed, instead always confident.

Melani Matavao gave Moana Pasiifka the lead back with an effort midway through the first half, before Harvey appeared to almost move in slow-motion during a spectacular somersault finish in the corner – immediately leaping up to face the crowd afterwards.

Harvey produced a chip-and-chase inside the Waratahs’ half in the 31st minute, something no player lacking in confidence would do. And generally, Harvey kicked well both off the goal-kicking tee and in general play.

Before the lightning delay in the 68th minute, Harvey crossed in the corner for his second.

It wouldn’t be anything new to say that Harvey is a future Wallaby or anything like that. But this was right up there as perhaps Harvey’s best performance to date in cambridge blue, alongside the young gun’s efforts against the Blues on March 21.

Tahs hold on after a lightning delay

There was a lightning delay just after 9:00 pm, bringing the match to a halt with 10 minutes left in the fixture. Harvey was about to attempt a conversion, but was made to wait at least half an hour for that shot at the sticks.

The Tahs had just taken an eight-point lead, finally building some scoreboard pressure after their dominance in both the possession and territory battles. But there was still plenty of rugby to be played, and both teams were chasing much-needed wins.

When play resumed, the Tahs held on.

Moana had plenty of ball inside the red zone, but the Tahs made some important match-defining tackles. With less than five minutes remaining, Pete Samu held a Moana player up over the line, which kept it a two-score game.

Then, fly-half Jack Debreczeni sent the goal-line dropout about 55 metres on the full.

These were arguably season-defining plays.

New South Wales had lost three of their last four to Moana and had only tasted victory on two other occasions during the 2026 campaign.

With another six matches to play in the round-robin, the Tahs sit just outside the top six on the live ladder. Defending champions the Crusaders sit in seventh, who they face next weekend at Christchurch’s One New Zealand during Super Round.
