Gareth Anscombe Bio

Gareth Anscombe was born on 10 May 1991 in Auckland, New Zealand. He’s the son of former Auckland and Ulster coach, Mark Anscombe.

Gareth Anscombe made his debut for Auckland in the 20210 season, a year after finishing school. A year later, he was the top point-scorer at the IRB Junior World Championship. From here, Gareth Anscombe’s meteoric rise continued and he went on to represent both the Blues and the Chiefs in Super Rugby

Then, in 2014, Gareth Anscombe decided to move to the UK. During this period of his career, he represented Cardiff Blues, Ospreys and Gloucester. He also signed for Suntory Sungoliath for the 2023-24 season, however his registration was cancelled when he underwent groin surgery and he never made an appearance for the side. From the 2025-26 season, he will play his domestic rugby for Bayonne in the Top 14

Despite representing New Zealand at U20 level, Gareth Anscombe ultimately decided to represent Wales on the international stage. He qualified to represent the country because his mother was born in Cardiff.

He made his debut for Wales in 2015 and has gone on to make more than 30 appearances for his adopted country. The highlight of his international career came in 2019, when he was named as Man of the Match when Wales beat Ireland 25-7 in order to gain the Six Nations Grand Slam. In the match, he scored 20 points.

Gareth Anscombe still has plenty to offer the game of rugby. We can’t wait to see what he achieves next.
