Do you feel JAS would get anywhere near the Bok team though, JW ? I don’t think he would.

Perhaps your point is that if he were in the Bok system, had been since he began to play the game, then he would be a far better player, better coaching background etc ?

Smith’s part of the problem. He’s one of the “masterminds” behind the current masterplan: get our flyhalves to kick the ball away on repeat and call it strategy. Because obviously pick-and-go, mauling, and direct carry-and-clean-out rugby are extinct concepts now, right? It’s not rugby anymore—it’s a long-form punt compilation with occasional breaks for a scrum.

And the attack coach? Absolute word-salad merchant. You could hand him a whiteboard, a marker, and unlimited prep time and he still wouldn’t design a backline move that survives first contact with reality. Everything’s “first-phase only,” because apparently once the ball leaves the set piece, the team collectively forgets the laws, the options, and how passing works. “Set plays off first phase.” Brilliant. Revolutionary. Someone alert the rest of the world that continuity has been cancelled.

Sela given big chance as Bath make statement selection

players should be selected on the basis of what they do on the pitch, not what they do on the scales. Lots of commenters on here struggle with grasping that, but thankfully van Graan doesn’t!

I’m not really sure why Sela needs more time. He’s older than Opoku-Fordjour was when he was first capped. There’s less than two years until the world cup and Borthwick will probably want Sela to get some experience before then.

Yes, Osborne at 12 is certainly an option. Leinster went with him there in 23/24, then veered away. Barrett & Ioane coming in saw him shunted to the back three.Kilgallen is a great player, but can’t stay on the park long enough. Whatever it is about Coombes, AF doesn’t seem convinced. Hodnett, too.

If all goes to form, it should be vs. Argentina in the QF. Certainly won’t be easy, but Ireland will back themselves for that. Would be good to see some new centres being blooded, and the likes of Izuchukwu and Joe McCarthy having clear runs of it.
