There are only three real candidates to be Dave Rennie's All Black captain

As the dust settles on the announcement of the All Blacks‘ new coaching staff, Dave Rennie’s next order of business will be to select the captain to take the team forward to 2027.

The incumbent, Scott Barrett, is currently on a non-playing sabbatical to refresh his body ahead of the run-in to the Rugby World Cup. He will return to Super Rugby with the Crusaders at the tail end of the season and would likely not have expected to return to the All Blacks with a regime change.

There are only three real candidates to take the All Blacks’ captaincy under Dave Rennie, including Barrett himself. All Black captains tend to be forwards, often in the back row. The chances of anyone in the backs taking over the captaincy are slim.

There is a strong possibility that Dave Rennie retains Scott Barrett as captain, based on Rennie’s past decisions.

When Dave Rennie took over the Wallabies job in 2020, many expected that to be the end of Michael Hooper’s captaincy. Even though the openside had penned a five-year deal at the back of 2019, Hooper was well and truly ‘Michael Cheika’s guy’, following the coach from the Waratahs to the Wallabies.

Cheika’s favourite No.7 was always ahead of the generational talent David Pocock in the pecking order, forcing him to No.8, even though he is perhaps the best poacher to ever grace a rugby field. Many in Australian circles believed that Hooper was unjustly a protected species and only picked in the team due to Cheika.

Starting with a new era in 2020, Rennie might have wanted to have distanced himself from the Cheika era and appoint a new face to lead the Wallabies, but his first choice was to stick with Hooper.

Rennie was quoted at the time saying, “going in a new direction doesn’t mean you need to change the furniture” on the call to back Hooper’s leadership, citing his strong respect within the group as a reason.

Many have pointed out that Rennie’s style of game revolves around a ferocious game at the attacking breakdown, clearing bodies by any means possible to generate fast ball. This is an area of the game where Barrett will lead by example, which could appeal to Rennie.

Under Scott Robertson, Barrett did hold back and rein in his ambitious style of play that often toed the line. Before he was captain, he was red carded for dangerous cleanouts twice, in Perth in 2019 and at Twickenham against South Africa in 2023.

If Rennie wants to dial back up the intensity of the attacking breakdown and “napalm the ruck”, there is no doubt he can rely on Barrett to do that and show the way. There isn’t another player in the All Blacks who comes to mind that is that physical, perhaps only Du’Plessis Kirifi, which does lend weight to the theory that Barrett will be retained.

The second candidate is Ardie Savea, a vice-captain last year and the subject of a speculated power struggle within the camp under Robertson.

Savea has had two stints at Kobe, firstly in 2024 and again in 2026, choosing to return to the Japanese club where Rennie is. The relationship is clearly harmonious and in good health.

If Savea plays openside for the All Blacks under Rennie, he will be tasked with clearing rucks and protecting ball more so than he does as a No.8.

At Kobe, Rennie has been playing him as a No.7 and for big minutes. Savea plays 80 minutes or 70+ minutes frequently. However, even as an openside, Savea does carry the ball a lot. It’s the trump card of having Savea in the first place, with his special leg drive and power. In that regard, he may not clean as often as a traditional seven.

If Rennie wants his captain to lead the way at the breakdown, Savea may not be the best candidate, and Barrett has the edge here. Savea will certainly carry more and have fewer ruck arrivals.

The big question mark with Savea is the ability to lead and influence all the players within the All Blacks. If he has been part of a faction that is causing division, is he now going to be a uniting force? It’s one thing to lead a small group unofficially, it’s another to lead a team officially.

The end of the Roberston era and the speculation around Savea’s involvement does harm his chances of being the next captain, even if he has a great relationship with Rennie.

The third candidate is hooker Codie Taylor who is in vintage touch at 34-years-old, an experienced forward with plenty of leadership qualities. He has joined the exclusive club of All Black centurions and captained his club at the Crusaders.

Taylor’s set-piece has been exceptional, especially last season. He’s guaranteed to start if healthy due to his ability to operate the lineout at 90%+. He is a work horse who gets through a lot of defence and can certainly impose himself on the attacking breakdown.

There is a fourth wild card option, Brodie Retallick, who only becomes viable if he decides to sign with NZR.

Rennie’s captain at Kobe is Brodie Retallick, which is a strong endorsement. Rennie has publicly expressed a desire to bring him back, and that could be why. Until a surprise deal is announced, he isn’t in the picture.

As it stands, those are the only three real candidates to be All Black captain, with Barrett actually holding the lead with the highest chance. Rennie has backed the incumbent before, and Barrett’s biggest strength, cleaning out, is likely integral to Rennie’s plans.

A certain Richie McCaw was still pretty wet behind the ears when made AB captain. He did OK as I recall. If you are a leader then you are a leader. I'm not saying experience is irrelevant but it's not the key either.

I think given the coaches, Ardie must be odds on favourite. He is also awesome follow me leader. But does he still have the passion? Does his reported malaise run deeper? Is there some burnout there? If so, he needs to be honest about that, much like Barrett needs to ask himself whether heis built for the captaincy of the ABs. If we look at the great and really good recent AB captains - Fitzpatrick, McCaw and Reid they commanded their positions and their passion for the Black jersey was never ever in doubt while they wore the Captains armband. Ever. Can we say that about Ardie given the talk of leaving the ABs just two months ago? Does a change in coach really reignite that never say die passion? If not, then the ABs should look to the next generation.

Does his reported malaise run deeper?

It’s no a malaise I wouldn’t say, its just that the All Blacks are not his highest purpose. I don’t think that person can be captain, nor does he want to be if you believe him.

It amazes me in the professional era that captains are not specifically trained for the role. That does not always mean employing a referee like SA and NZ.

We are talking effective communication and good listening skills.

This can and should be trained. A person doesn’t have to have the natural personality traits. Leaving it to the individual is amateur hour stuff.

A Captain must also be able to ensure the leadership group functions in such a way that what is required and/or tactical changes and longer in a match are identified and communicated quickly to the players in the team that need to know.

This onfield organisation could be the difference in a big RWC knock out match.

Captaincy is a big role and the person must be fully supported in that role to get the maximum for the team.

J
JW 40 days ago

Maybe that’s always been a strength of NZ then, but I can’t imagine so. Captains have indeed always been ‘groomed’ here, maybe you just mean they’ve done a poor job?

Could be a mixture of that practice having it’s problems too, like the wrong picture of a captain coming through, and the process ruling out the wrong (good options) sort of people, with the better idea to ‘groom’ everyone and then see who comes out the other end best?

As a long suffering Hurricanes fan I'll tell you for free that Ardie is terrible at the on field captain's role, doesn't communicate with the ref, makes poor decisions and no fan wants to hear a 2 minute prayer before a lacklustre 20 second explanation of what went right or wrong. Great player, terrible option for captain.

Scott had his run, he isn't a top 3 lock at the moment, he's better off focusing on his game.

Personally I want a captain that's in a position where it's likely that they'll play 80 minutes most games, they're the main point of contact with the ref and continuity matters when pointing out issues and infringements, for that reason (amongst smaller ones) I don't want Codie Taylor there, vice captain? Sure, he's been there long enough and it's unlikely he won't be in a given 23.

The last back to be ABs captain to my knowledge was Tana, who just so happens to be an incoming coach, why limit ourselves to forwards when our best, most consistent players happen to be backs? Roigard is great but like hooker it's not an 80 minute position and he's still pretty new, Jordie is pretty much the only player that I would consider, even if it makes Christmas dinner in Pungarehu a bit awkward.

J
JW 40 days ago

Jordie is an 80 minute player for you? Where?

S
Stavroula Alachiotis 44 days ago

I feel like savea and sititi are on the same level, but I would recommend the all blacks to try include Brodie retallick for 2027, as every good team should have about 80% new guys, and the rest should be experienced blokes to guide the youngsters. But Scott Barrett or sititi should be captain in my opinion

It's far more important to get the right 15/23, the captain should follow from there. One of Fozzies biggest mistakes was naming Sam Cane as captain way before the squad was announced then felt he couldn't back track.

J
JW 40 days ago

Why would you back track on Cane?

In the end Cane was injured a fair bit so he really had multiple captains as well.

Q
Quinninexile 44 days ago

Why don’t we choose the best fullback and guaranteed starter - Will Jordan. Plenty more experience than Roigard and likely to play 80.

J
JW 40 days ago

Because he’s not?

d
d 44 days ago

I know the ABs will deny it, because they like Scottie and don’t want to hurt his feelings, but I have yet to see him act anything like a captain. We need a captain who deals confidently rather than obsequiously with the ref, and whose whole demeanour lifts the side, particularly when they are on the back foot.

J
JW 44 days ago

Barrett will remain captain until Rennie is ready to make a decision after Rivalry tour. It’s really the only logical option.

S
SC 44 days ago

Is Savea a better 7 than Lakai? Is Savea a better 8 than Sititi? Both debatable.

Is Taylor a better hooker than both Taukeo’aho and Aumua? Debatable.

Is S. Barrett a better lock than Holland and Va’ai? Debatable.

Is J. Barrett a better 12 than Tupaea? Debatable.

Is there any NZ halfback better than Roigard. NO- indisputable.

Roigard as captain.

R
RD 44 days ago

Scott was a clear starter before he became captain, the problem with picking experience is that you're also picking an old player, Savea isn't going to be at his best by the world cup and there's a fair chance that he wouldn't be the first choice starter without being captain, captains don't get benched or dropped if they underperform, they get “rested” if we're lucky.

J
JW 44 days ago

The team captain runs the week, he doesn’t need to play. Strategic captains are appointed each week for the game, you can have about three of them, two starting one bench etc.

S
Spew_81 44 days ago

J Barrett may get another shot at 12, considering how well he is working with: Love and Roigard as a playmaking trio.

Tupaea can play well at 13. A J Barrett 12/Tupaea 13 combo would have a lot going for it.

That Roigard/Love/J Barrett trio idea could work with McKenzie 10 instead of Love at 10. If Rennie want’s more experience at 10.

But as Rennie is on a hiding to nothing. He may as well give Love a shot and hope that Love develops very quickly. It is highly likely that Love will start at 10 for one of the two All Blacks teams that will tour South Africa.

S
Spew_81 44 days ago

Roigard will start most games and play 80 minutes. He also has the authority of a veteran past his years.

Roigard playing 80 minutes works well with 6-2 splits e.g. substitute the specialist reserve halfback with a utility back.

S
Spew_81 44 days ago

Taylor does not have the right temperament for captain.

Leadership group Yes, Captaincy No.

S
SC 44 days ago

Cam Roigard as captain.

Roigard is the same age and position as when France gave Antione DuPont the captaincy and it has benefited the player and team.

Time is now to give the arm band to the present not the past- Cam Roigard.

J
John Breslin 44 days ago

Dupont was firstly the Toulouse captain for the title winning 2020/21 season

He got a run at the French captaincy that Nov - in Ollivon’s absence. He then got it the following season in his mid-20’s

Roigard would need to win honours in super rugby as captain first, if he is to emulate Dupont

The ABs way has tended to be forwards as captains in the modern era. I don't see it changing

B
BM 44 days ago

Savea as captain. Does the writer not recall Ardie sitting under the posts sulking like a 5 year old

S
Spew_81 44 days ago

Savea and S Barrett may be better starting from the bench as part of a ‘Bomb Squad’.

J
John Breslin 45 days ago

Needs to be a recent ‘World Rugby Player of the Year’ who has never been red carded in his professional career

Good lad, Ardie. Go get it!

S
SC 44 days ago

Savea is past his prime as is Taylor and S. Barrett.

Select a captain entering his prime who has been to a RWC- Cam Roigard.

Will Jordan, not all captains need to be in the front

I

You’re kidding. Game smarts aren't the same as ref smarts, and Jordan has consistently demonstrated an inability to talk a ref into or out of anything.

Tupou Vaii

S
Spew_81 44 days ago

Solid long-term option. Great player, correct temperament.

But maybe better to pick up the captaincy from 2028 onwards?

B
Bazzallina 45 days ago

Would it be wrong of me to say that Cody did not show the form LY ( was still good) or so far this year to be a shoo in as the starting 2? cannot deny the ball carry abilities of Samisoni Asafa and Bell at present with the first 2 in their “ golden” years in terms of age experience

J
JW 44 days ago

You haven’t been listening to Jeffery enough, finishing is more important in a hooker.

J
John Breslin 44 days ago

I love Taylor but he's a card machine. Basically an ATM

You need your captain on the pitch as often as possible

B
Blackmania 45 days ago

I agree with you. I don’t see Taylor in the conversation to be captain, as I think he won’t necessarily be a starter with the new coaching staff. My pick is Aumua to be number 2.

Jordie Barrett could be captain. It would be a smart move by Rennie to transfer the captaincy to Scott Barrett’s brother, and it would probably reduce speculation compared to if it were Ardie Savea.
