Yes it's pure recency bias Mitch. The Boks happen to be the best at the moment so everyone says it's the URC. People forget that South Africa became number one when their players were very young and 80% of the starting lineup were in Super Rugby.

Ok GVF have woken up with a more positive attitude. The ABs have not peaked yet - at critical moments / seconds under pressure their system has slowed down and at times misfired. I think part of that is due to Love still learning his 10 game at this level. Nano decision making slightly off. So, even though Richie has not played this DR system yet, he may just be able to navigate those moments / seconds a little better and so keep the AB machine in 5th gear for longer. Another potential positive is Blackadder’s work rate - far superior to Jacobson - and alongside Lakai - that could be significant at ruck time. Missing Ardie is huge - especially in those dark moments - but its time for Vaa’i, Paddy and Taylor to step up. Alongside Richie - we may well see the ABs fire up. The dark “reality” cloud in all of this is that the Boks have not yet peaked - and with their scrum “cheat code” they are plainly firm favourites.

And to be clear I am using “cheat code” in the sense of a gamer who has worked out how to beat the game - NOT that they are doing something nefarious.

It would have to be multiple injuries for that to occur. With Rieko on the bench he would surely cover the first injury. If there are two early back injuries, yeah it might be a problem but it is all about risk and reward - we have only had one back in game injury for the whole tour from memory and that was well into the second half. BB might have a great game as a sub - but does he offer a distinct point of difference to DMcK, Murphy or Jordan in the last 15?

Agree Toko - it is no coincidence that the Boks got on top of the ABs from about minute 60. A extra forward ball carrier (eg Semisi) or TT would have been great to see - and TT is genuine cover for inside centre and wing. As to fitness the idea is to bring them on only for the last 15-20 to blow holes against soft shoulders. And like you I just dont see the utility value in a 10 / 15 replacement when that is already covered by multiple players, bearing in mind BB must surely be full back cover as Damien must be first choice 10 cover. Jordan could easily go to fullback too and TT covers wing with Rieko covering outside centre. If experience is the issue, well with JB, DMcK, ALB, Jordan, Rieko and Richie, we have one of the most test hardened backlines we have had for a long while. If anything with BB it is starting to look like the Seniors tour…

* Its just occurred to me Richie, JB, Rieko, Jordan, BB, DMcK and ALB all played in the 2023 final … utu time…

Yes, I think Rennie’s success is in part due to a group of players coming into excellent form this year. Players like Holland and Love. Can’t honestly say that of Roigard, as he was very good last yuear too.

I was perplexed when I saw your comment in my gmail first, GVF, but coming to the actual comments section of the article, and reading d’s comment below, I assume now you misunderstood my comment.

And I do realise how much support there is for the game from the black/coloured population. One only has to look at crowd shots at any game anywhere the Boks play to realise that. And ofc the upsurge in black coloured people now playing the game is plain for all to see. I count it as a major reason why the Springboks will remain right at the top in the game for the foreseeable future.
