Wales star Tomos Williams is facing a battle to be fit for Friday night’s Gallagher PREM West Country with play-off chasing Bristol Bears at Ashton Gate.

Scrum-half Williams, who is leaving Kingsholm for PREM rivals Saracens at the end of the season, suffered a shoulder injury in a collision with team-mate Jack Innard in the 26-19 win over Harlequins at the Twickenham Stoop last month.

The Lions tourist missed the Cherry and Whites’ 36-17 defeat to Leicester Tigers at Villa Park, and is back running again, but boss George Skivington believes that the visit to Bristol could come too early for him.

“Tomos got a bang to his shoulder. It wasn’t horrendous or anything like that. I think he has probably just played a lot of rugby, to be honest, coming off the back of the Six Nations.

“And, you know, when lads are fatigued, the bangs take a little bit longer. But he’s there or thereabouts. We’ll make a call on him for the weekend. He’s not bad. He’s in a good spot,” he said.

Skivington says that two of his other scrum-halves, Mikey Austin and Callum Braley, will also miss the trip down the M5, but there is good news about winger Ben Loader, who is back in full training and available for selection.

Loader, 27, who has scored one try in five games for Gloucester following his move from United Rugby Championship outfit the Stormers, has been out of action since the 30-21 home defeat to Saracens in December with back-to-back hamstring injuries.

But Skivington revealed that Wales international winger Josh Hathaway, who has scored four tries in 11 games this season, has played his last game of the campaign because of an injury.

“Ben Loader is back in training now, so he’s good to go, but Josh Hathaway is out for the season. He hurt his hamstring,” added Skivington.
