The Straight 8 fan set vote to decide World XV

Voting has been intense and margins very tight!

Rugby fans from all over the world are turning out in droves for the first ever global fan vote to select the best player in every position across the rugby field in 2020. Eight nominated candidates go head-to-head in three rounds of knockout voting to determine the winner in each position, with the resulting fifteen forming the first ever fan-selected World XV.

Voter turnout has been immense with some categories having already been decided including the vote for best lock, best flanker, and best winger…

Agree with all that. I am hoping it settles to something fairer in the next year. It is extremely difficult for the defensive catcher as is, any slight error is often a knock on/knock on advantage and worse.

You do know that, despite the media’s ignorance, Scott Hansen was one of Jamie Joseph’s assistant coaches with Japan from 2020-2023 including the 2023 RWC. That is 4 years of international coaching experience.

Jason Ryan has now been All Blacks forward coach for 4 years.

Who are the contenders to replace Abby 'Wow' on England's wing?

There is of course the option of playing Helena Rowland or Emma Sing at Full back and moving ellie kildunne to the wing. Tough to replace Abby Dow-most years she has been a world XV player-england will be a weaker team without her as shes been such a great attacking threat for the team. Kildunne,Dow and meg jones are the 3 england backs that are hardest to replace as they have such individual skillsets and get into world XVs regularly

Our Investec Champions Cup team of the week

I think for the English teams to compete you either have to prioritise the Investec over the PREM (as Saints did after the bad start last year) or you need to get very lucky with injuries to see you across both competitions.

I think the Will Stuart injury was a bit of a blow, so will depend how many more they have between now and the 6 Nations.

Will be interesting to see if Bath can mount a charge. They’re definitely a way off Toulouse & BB at the moment, but if they decide to really focus on the champions cup that could change.

There are other vital elements in a top winger: sound defence (closely allied to intuitive positioning), kicking skills, preferably with either foot, and an instinctive ability to link with the other 2 of the back 3.

Big question: will JM feel the need to experiment (CMM is nearing 30) or stick to the player who's already proved herself?

Yes, it doesn’t change the overall style but will certainly give them more depth & consistency for the number of games they are having to manage and the ability to manage injuries.

Whilst UBB have been up there for a few seasons, I do wonder how much more confidence and assurance they will play with and we will likely see them at their best this year and next.

When they are in the mood UBB are prob the hardest team to defend against in Europe. They can score a lot of points very quickly indeed.

JLDP is prob a like for like with Guido Petti, and they will likely play him at 4 as much as they do 6. They already have big carrying guys like Matiu and Gazzotti and BVT and now Willis so he’ll be a swingman for them.

The other aspect is that McCall is a DoR type who doesn’t do tracksuit coaching, so he’d be starting from scratch there. I think that is what may have held Rob Baxter back too?

World Rugby also have to make the Garyowen a contest. I wasn’t a fan of the blatant blockers practically being a ‘Stationary Wall’ but in removing any ‘blockers’ it has technically turned it too much the other way into a 15v1 contest where the defending team basically has to catch the ball while the chasing team are allowed to slap it backwards. Perhaps make it only a 1v1. If there is no 1v1 contest then it is 15 Chasers ready to flatten/muller the Defender who catches the ball. It is almost an ‘intentional’ mugging.

Some of the Chasers are now also jumping into the contest with their back to the opposition which is like jumping across the line at a Line-out. How can the chaser have due-diligence to their opponent if they jump into them with their backs turned?
