England head coach Steve Borthwick has named a 36-player squad for a three-day training camp ahead of the forthcoming Nations Championship.

There’s a return to the squad of Harlequins loosehead Fin Baxter and Sale Sharks’ Joe Marchant. Maro Itoje returns after having the summer off, while Will Stuart, Ben Curry, Emmanuel Iyogun, Tom Pearson and Kepueli Tuipulotu all return.

There’s no room for Bath’s Ben Spencer, Ollie Lawrence, Ted Hill, Vilikesa Sela and Charlie Ewels. Bristol’s George Kloska and Saracens’ hooker Theo Dan are also missing, having appeared in the June window of the new competition.

Seb Atkinson, Immanuel Feyi-Waboso and Guy Pepper are all listed as being in injury rehab. Chandler Cunningham-South and Benhard Janse van Rensburg are also not considered due to injury.

The squad assembled on Sunday and will train at England’s Performance Centre at Pennyhill Park through to Tuesday as preparations begin for a crucial November schedule.

England kick off their Nations Championship campaign against Australia at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, on November 8 before further fixtures against Japan and New Zealand later in the month.

The short camp provides Borthwick with an opportunity to bring his players together following the opening weeks of the domestic season, while a final Nations Championship squad will be finalised in the coming weeks.

This looks like England are moving to a more physical pack again.

Suspect they will pair Genge/LCD/Stuart with Baxter/George/Heyes but the inclusion of Tuipulotu as the 3rd hooker is an interesting development.

Suspect we will see Itoje/Martin paired together.

Back row is interesting, I wonder if we see Chessum at 6, with possibly pearson at 7 & Pollock at 8, with Coles, T Curry & Earl off the bench, or even T, Curry, B Curry, Earl off the bench to raise the workrate in that final quarter.

The real question to solve is where do you play Pollock. Has his form finally justified a start at 8 (over earl) and if so, which is the most balanced back row to get the best from his game.

Interesting decision at centre - my gut feel is he may try the Saints style of backline, so we may well see Mitchell, Caluori, F Smith, Dingwall, (probably) Marchant (if BjvR remains injured) and then Freeman & Furbank.

As has been the case since RWC 2023, I think Borthers is still looking for his back row & centre combo’s, which was the issue he inhereted from Eddie and still doesn’t appear to have found his favoured combo.

I do think this was very harsh on Hendy, he deserved to be in that squad and is probably the key omission.

Get Lawrence in!

Will Joseph is good, but not international standard yet.

Also feels like a slight missed opportunity to persist with Furbank instead of Pater.

But overall, this is a good squad.
