Question mark over Andrew Porter as Ireland's injury woes mount up

Andrew Porter/ PA

Ireland’s principal loose-head, Andrew Porter, is a doubt for the early rounds of the Guinness Men’s Six Nations after it was revealed he injured his calf in training last week.

It would be a huge blow for Ireland to lose the services of Porter, as he’s been a virtual ever-present since Rugby World Cup 2023, while there are also injury doubts over his main understudies, Paddy McCarthy and Jack Boyle.

The Dubliner, who celebrates his 30th birthday in four days’ time, is being sent for a scan, with fears that the injury could keep him out for eight weeks. If that timeline is accurate, the Lions player will do well to make it back before the championship finale against Scotland in Dublin on March 14th.

Meanwhile, Munster scrum-half Craig Casey suffered a shoulder injury in the province’s agonising Champions Cup defeat to Toulon, which has left their qualification hopes hanging in the balance. Munster coach Clayton McMillan described the injury as “reasonably serious”.

Casey featured in six straight games for Ireland at the back end of 2025, including three starts, and would ordinarily expect to be Andy Farrell’s second-choice nine behind Jamison Gibson-Park.

With Ciarán Frawley forced off with an ankle injury early in Leinster’s win, head coach Andy Farrell will be hoping to see Hugo Keenan return to action and boost his full-back options, before Ireland’s Six Nations campaign starts away to France on Thursday, February 5th.

Keenan underwent surgery on a longstanding hip problem after the Lions tour and has yet to feature this season. However, Mack Hansen’s season could be over after he underwent foot surgery, while Jamie Osborne and Jimmy O’Brien, are currently nursing knocks.

Wing James Lowe is not expected to be out for long after picking up a neck injury, which forced him to miss the narrow win over La Rochelle at the weekend.

Hopefully Paddy McCarthy makes it as this would be golden experience for him. Otherwise it is a blessing in disguise for building some depth.

3.5 weeks till France away. Doesn't sound good for Porter.

Paddy McArthy is injured - a “significant” foot injury in some reports, knee in others. So it is Boyle and then Milne? on the loosehead. If Furlong can get through the next two weeks then tighthead should be fine but he is not operating at 100% IMO.

Rassie Erasmus: 'I think we'll find a very desperate New Zealand team'

Disagree with parts of this John. The ABs are grossly underrated at the moment based largely on the England perferformance. But 6N has shown that impressions of teams from one or two losses or wins means little. It is performance against top teams over a sustained period that counts. The idea that England were clearly No2 in the world after beating the All Blacks once was overhype as the two losses against Scotland and Ireland show. Conversely to say they are rubbish now is equally dumb. In reality the ABs are deservedly No2. They have beaten all the top five teams from Nov 24-Nov 25 and have the second best win rate of all top teams against other top teams. Notably when they last toured SA they lost two close games. And the idea also that ABs don’t have the rugby player resource to tour SA successfully is just wrong. Several key forwards did not participate in the Autumn series representing hundreds of test caps - Ofa, Lomax, Aumua, Tuipolutu, Vaa’i, Blackadder, Jacobson, Papali’i etc. Multiple emergent and seasoned forwards will provide staunch dirt tracker opposition - Dyer, Norris, Bell, Renata, Numia, Lauaki, Shalfoon, Hannah, Ah Koi, Mafeleo, Iose, Howden, Fusitua, Beehre, Boshier…. The tour will also be in August, mid international season and the ABs will be peaking. The tour will actually provide the coach with the time to build culture and synergies. The underdog will drive them too. Would not write off ABs so easily.
