Lions assistant coach Julian Redelinghuys has defended rival Leinster defence coach Jacques Nienaber ahead of their URC quarter-final clash this weekend.

Nienaber has become a scapegoat of sorts after Leinster’s heavy 41-19 loss in the European final to Bordeaux, with corners of Irish media and fans blaming Nienaber’s aggressive defensive system as a key reason why.

Redelinghuys came to the defence of the ex-Springbok head coach while speaking with media ahead of the quarter-final clash, pointing the mirror back on the Irish supporters who don’t see his “value” or appreciate him.

“Everything is Jacques’ fault, it’s terrible to see,” Redelinghuys said.

“We all know the quality coach he is and the value he adds. It seems the people on this side do not appreciate it. In the team, they do, but it doesn’t look like the Irish supporters do, with all the things you see and hear and how they throw him under the bus by blaming him.

“Apparently, he is not allowed to breathe in the coaching box. There are a lot of ugly things.

“However, we’ve worked with him and know what he can do and who he is. We do not doubt the quality he brings to Leinster, but it doesn’t look like the Irish appreciate him.”

Nienaber joined Leinster after the 2023 Rugby World Cup but the Irish heavyweights have not been able to win their fifth European crown, finishing as runners up twice with the South African assistant. They lost the final twice in a row to La Rochelle before his arrival in 2022 and 2023.

However, last season Leinster did become URC champions with their first title since the South Africans joined the expanded competition, winning their first title since the 2021 Pro14 championship.

Leinster have won four of the last five against the Lions as they look to begin their run towards consecutive URC finals. The last clash between the two teams was only three weeks ago, where Leinster comfortably beat them by 31-7.

What is this utter nonsense? Leinster got hammered by Bordeaux. 35 scored at half time and if Bordeuax needed 70 by FT you felt it was possible. Ofcourse, there was going to be questions around the D. Most questions are at Cullen’s door though as the head coach. Victor Matfield said that the SA doesn’t work unless you win the collisions which gives you time to rush. If you don’t win the collissions and/or struggle on a hot day it works. Some Leinster supporters and pundits are surely allowed discuss this before we get a broadside against all Irish supporters by yet another thin skinned saffer this one the Lions coach?

Jamie Joseph pinpoints where Highlanders repeatedly fell short in 2026

In an article from years back, the Highlanders were mentioned as spending far below the salary cap compared to the other teams in the competition, particularly the Crusaders and the Blues with a key factor being more difficulty attracting top young talent. Part of that is because they’ve been historically the least successful team in the competition and that’s not always just mismanagement - they’ve visibly had less talent than most of the other teams in the competition for a number of reasons. Part of this is of course having the smallest population base out of all the teams but they’ve also the University of Otago not attracting as many players to the area out of high school as it used to. How is that the Highlanders’ fault? They can make do with other teams’ scraps but let’s be honest here - most of the other teams will be claiming their top talent first and their blue chip import talent will be guys from surplus positions such as winger (e.g. Tangitau) or players from outsider situations like Tavatavanawai (coming from Fiji and Moana) or Holland (latecomer to NZ and at a position that was covered in most other SR franchises).

That’s where you need to find parity. A different draft system could be “pick an All Black coach for your team” and the draft gives you dibs on who out of the ABs team becomes and assistant at your franchise. One cool way to ensure a key factor in acruing talent.
