Emirates Lions thrash Zebre Parma in Johannesburg

Henco van Wyk and Edwill van der Merwe claimed two tries apiece as the Emirates Lions eased to a convincing 61-19 bonus-point success over Zebre Parma in the United Rugby Championship.

Richard Kriel, Francke Horn, Quan Horn, Morne van den Berg and Emmanuel Tshituka were also on the scoresheet as the Lions emphatically claimed a second win of the season, while fly-half Sanele Nohamba slotted eight conversions.

Zebre responded through a pair of Simone Gesi scores, plus one from Jacopo Trulla and four points from the boot of Giovanni Montemauri, but were well beaten in Johannesburg.

Potential 8 Nations after SA and Georgia Join:


Two seeded groups of 4. League stage (3 matches), Knock out stage (2 matches).


eg

Group 1: Ireland, France, Scotland, Georgia.

Group 2: South Africa, England , Wales, Italy.


Top 4 Cup: Semi Finals, 3rd/4th playoff, Final.

Bottom 4 Plate: Semi Finals, 7th/8th playoff, Final.


Holds some league format, but includes knock out phase also. Great RWC prep.

Argentina head into autumn series without Pablo Matera after ban

Italy V Argentina is a very important game. While ranking changes between the 2019 and 2023 tournament played no part in the draw for 2023, rankings at end of 2025 will likely be used for the 2027 draw.


As there are 6 pools in RWC 2027, to get in Band 1 for the draw you need to be in the top #6.


Argentina currently are #6 with 84

Scotland #7 have 82

Italy #8 have circa 80.


Should Argentina lose to Italy they are now in the 82.5 range close to Italy, Scotland and showing Australia a chink of light.

Argentina only lose .5 points by losing to Ireland/France. After the November series there are only 3 International windows left.


Will this factor in Contemponi's analysis and preparation? The Italy match appears to be the real must win.

R.E. definitely. Taken a squad at rock bottom to world Champs.


He has pushed the envelope and made a mockery of world rugby. Yes he does have his critics, though his antics have been very entertaining.


He has almost single handedly changed the game as we see it now.


Riding on a red card and missed penalty into hall of fame, I don't think so.

I thought about adding EPCR games but it would have taken a long time Ed - too long. And AFAIK the agreement between LNR and FFR is based on Top 14 minutes not European comps.


Having said that it would have been nice to be able to include the extras... There are three rounds of knockouts in Super Rugby compared to eight rounds [four pool games + potentially four knockout rounds] in European comps.


It's quite interesting, because a side like Toulouse reverse course in the EPCR. Dupont only played 700 mins in the Top 14 but 240 mins in the pools stage of the Champions Cup. His deputy Paul Graou played over 1400 mins in Top 14 but only 11 in those pool games....


I suspect the SRP teams just had to plough ahead with the same personnel in the knockouts.

Great work Nick, must have taken a while but given there isn’t an EPCR equivalent in the SH, surely it’s not a like for like comparison without those games in the figures? Particularly since the top clubs absolutely prioritise having their best players for those games.

Sua'ali'i would probably need to bulk out a bit first though


15 would be a good fit for him physically, and would suit his skillset given his kicking, but does he have the tactical awareness to win kick tennis battles? I haven't watched league in years but I gather that that isn't really part of the game

Yep it's a great point about top SA players... The Test-worthy ones now have to go straight from the RC into the URC without much of a break or a pre-season. How long can they sustain it before SA moves to join the 6N instead, which fits the European season far better?

Was a surprise to me as well that Aus players play so much.

There is a real concern in South Africa that our players play all year round. This due to our players playing URC up North + the Midyear tests + Currie Cup + the Rugby Championship in the South.

There is no break.

Something has to give, and I think the longevity of our top players will be shortened.

What many people don't seem to understand is that rugby is just a game, just another sport fighting for eyeballs against every single other sport, social media, videogames, etc. Our fanbase is ageing and capturing the imagination of the next generation should be a top priority if we want our game to have a future. Ilona has done a wonderful job in putting rugby out there, something not even great male players like Dan Carter could do. Between her and Siya Kolisi they are pushing rugby into uncharted territory, and we should celebrate that, instead of being suspicious. Every single talk show she's invited to, every brand deal she gets is a win for rugby.

No they are just based on domestic leagues - so no post-season knockouts. or European games included for France/England/Ireland etc...


I'm surprised the top players in Aussie and NZ are playing so much - Aussie in particualr no far short of France. That's a detriment and it might also go some way to explaining the ABs fall-off in the last 20' of games.

Five big omissions from the All Blacks XV squad

Despite Super Rugby's flaws The Hurricanes, Blues, and Chiefs forward packs are a significant step up from the Fiji forwards. Especially when so few of their team play together and it was their first game of the year.


My point is not that RR should be starting for the ABs, or that Bell is not a very talented player, but that like many other selections it just seems random and inconsistent. If Bell was coming off the back of an SR season like RR had then you wouldn't flinch at his age or experience, like Sititi for example. But that is not the case for Bell at all. In fact he had some pretty horrible performances.


Inconsistent selections make an inconsistent team.

Yeah. Look at the Saffa teams. They get dozens of people to attend for a massive mafch - maybe even 100 people on a great day. Most of them either family members or get free tickets.
