In-form Tommy O'Brien rewarded at Leinster

Leinster and Ireland wing Tommy O’Brien has signed a new deal with the club in what is his breakthrough season on the Test stage.

The 27-year-old, who made his debut for Leinster in 2019, has been dogged by injuries for large parts of his career, which has curtailed his progress.

He has managed to remain healthy over the past year, which allowed him to make his Ireland debut against Georgia last July before putting in some strong showings during the Guinness Six Nations, finishing the Championship with two tries against Scotland.

The winger is fresh from a try-scoring display against Sale Sharks in the Investec Champions Cup quarter-final, where he was one of Leinster’s best performers.

In light of his display against the Gallagher PREM outfit, former Wales captain Dan Biggar was effusive with his praise for the winger.

“Tommy O’Brien on the wing is absolutely brilliant,” he said on The Rugby Pod this week. “An absolute superstar. Everything he touches at the minute, whether it’s high balls, kicks through, tackle, jackal, everything about him. He’s a proper rugby player.”

It doesn’t look like they do but as you say, it will fully resource that back row for a battle on two fronts (which is tough).

I know J-L didn’t want to play at lock any longer at Sale, which was part of the issue, especially with the two Curry’s being the preferred 6/7 starting combo.

He would make the matchday 23 and I suspect you would see a starting back row of Jack Willis, Tom Curry & Ben Earl as the starting back row, or possibly with Tom Curry/Underhill/Earl with Jack Willis & Pollock coming off the bench.

I think this will take 2 things to allow this to happen;

1) Steve Borthwick will need to be fired as England coach, as I doubt Jack Willis has much faith in him to start with given his past history and I doubt his handling of his brother will have helped much either (this season).

Not many England players considering they won very comfortably against an improving Ireland and didn’t play all that well, a bit like the WC. The quality of the opposition doesn’t seem to be a factor in some of these choices.

There were really two games within a game - The First 40 before the red card (where Toulouse did well) and in fairness it was the second 35 where things changed but UBB are lethal and can just score from anywhere the way they play.

In the first 40 the scrum was even, UBB have great athletes in the line out, who have strong line out D (you really need 3 jumpers against them) but I did feel Toulouse made gains with the pick and go around the fringes, winning the initial leg drive carry but the UBB line/rush defence is up quickly and that’s where Finn Russell and his chip kicks will keep them honest.

That’s where Will Muir becomes a key player for them, Spencer’s left peg box kick plus his aerial challenge is how they like to make progress up the pitch, which is why I think UBB will switch Penaud back to 14 as you suggested.

If you decide to kick to LBB, I think you get what you deserve. 🤣🤣🤣

Hard to know whether UBB need them! Gazzotti was outstanding as was Matiu when he came on. Maybe it’s just options for the Top 14 grind with JLDP playing a fair bit of second row. UBB used Guido Petti the same way.

Yes, and South African English is different to both American and British English; closer to the latter, I believe, but still distinct. I don't really know if the South African convention is to write with or without the internal capitalization. You are the one that keeps referring to South Africa, so maybe you know. However, there are cultures where this IS the norm and my point this whole time was that you should not call what someone does a mistake, if all they did was follow their own cultural norms.

I tell you what, you go ask Antoine if he is offended if other cultures apply their own cultural norms and conventions and capitalize the P in his surname when they refer to him. If he does take offense, I will apologize to him, but I will probably also lose quite a lot of respect for him as he has so far given me every impression that he respects others cultures and their right to express their cultural identity.
