Henry Pollock has come under fire on social media after a fiery cameo off the bench in Northampton Saints’ heavy defeat to Leicester Tigers at Welford Road.

The home side had dominated from the outset, with Jamie Blamire grabbing a brace and Wallaby James O’Connor pulling the strings in a composed display at fly-half.

In truth, the East Midlands derby was effectively over as a contest by the time Pollock entered the fray. Geoff Parling’s outfit were already in full control and cruising towards a convincing victory.

But rather than fading quietly, the closing stages were punctuated by flashpoints; many of them involving the young back-rower.

Indeed Pollock was immediately in the thick of it, drawing the attention of referee Matthew Carley, the biggest moment arriving shortly after the 52-minute mark. With Saints trailing by close to 30 points and struggling, Pollock had been asked to step in at hooker due to the sin-binning of Craig Wright, a role that quickly proved a big ask.

After a lineout was deemed not straight, the whistle went, but Pollock’s frustrations spilled over. He briefly grabbed Leicester forwards Ollie Chessum and Hanro Liebenberg by the legs after the play had stopped before needlessly shoving Jack van Poortvliet, sparking a melee involving players from both sides.

Pollock, while giving it plenty of gob, seemed happy to do so while backing up from the burly 6’6, 118kg South African Liebenberg, and the England back-rower copped plenty of flak on X for his antics.

South African rugby writer Graeme Peacock wrote: “Henry Pollock [is] going to become a severely disliked player both locally and internationally if he carries on like this, getting booed by Leicester fans, coming on and acting like a bit of a clown and even peeing his fellow England players off. Could turn into a lonely road.”

Another fan echoed the sense of contradiction in Pollock’s game, writing: “I love Henry Pollock. He’s an exceptional player. But sometimes, you can see why others hate him.”

Others were far less forgiving in their assessment of the 20-year-old’s demeanour during the incident, particularly his animated reactions in the immediate aftermath.

Popular South African rugby account and pundit Rugby AP posted: “Pollock looks so stupid jumping up and down and pulling faces as Hanro calmly just keeps advancing towards him. Plastic boy.”

The timing of the flashpoint, with Saints heavily beaten and chasing shadows, also made Pollock’s antics look a little bloodless.

One user wrote: “Pollock’s a quality player but all that was purely playing up for cameras! Carley handled him perfectly – carry on, go and sit down for another 10! He’s a young lad so get being excited, but a senior player needs to say forget messing about and play when down by 30.”

Another added: “Henry Pollock’s stupid childish goading & winding up of opposition players – while Saints are being heavily beaten – is amongst the most pathetic things I have seen.”

It wasn’t all negative. Pollock did show a glimpse of his attacking quality with a neat pass to set up George Hendy’s try, but that moment was largely lost in the wider narrative of his cameo.

It’s a brave choice to pick a fight with a man who looks like he eats tractors for breakfast, especially when your primary weapon is looking like a very angry chihuahua

His international teammates who appeared to dislike him the most. Stewart had him in his pocket all match. Stewart gave him a little shove and Pollock was off. Every competitor knows that Pollock has a “Clown” button that is easy to push. As English punters knowledgably promise, It will be worth it when his army of Tick Tock fans start playing the game though! (LOL)

Cute. I hope he does that at Ellis Park. Will make the price of admission worth it.

I think it’s great for the game.

Who cares if he takes it upon himself to be the heel. It’s a sacrifice we’re willing for him to take…

Laughing at the little doggie yapping away. Sums up Pollock to a T.
