‘He’ll play this year’: Former All Black on why Blues bolter can’t be ignored

Former All Black James Parsons has no doubt in his mind that Blues loose-forward Anton Segner will represent the All Blacks in 2026.

Segner captained the Blues in their 59-34 defeat at the hands of the second-placed Chiefs in Hamilton on Saturday night, ruining their chance of hosting a Qualifying Final this weekend.

The German-born loose-forward has gone from strength to strength in the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season, amassing 88 carries and 144 tackles so far for the Blues.

His 15 turnovers are among the league’s best, and with 44 players set to be named for the All Blacks’ Greatest Rivalry Tour to South Africa, Segner has been discussed as a genuine option for Dave Rennie.

The newly appointed All Blacks coach has talked about his desire to pick players based on form, and being effective on both sides of the ball.

This suits Segner, whose work around the park for the Blues has been admirable, while becoming a lineout option for Vern Cotter’s side has helped in the absence of Patrick Tuipulotu.

The 24-year-old is fifth equal on the list of lineouts won in the 2026 season with 54, and has six line breaks to his name.

Parsons, a two-Test former All Black, believes that Segner has made a real push to be in Rennie’s squad, and wouldn’t look out of place if selected.

“Carry and clean is big for Dave Rennie, and 75% of the time that he carries it, he gets past the gain-line, it’s the best of any loose-forward in New Zealand,” Parsons said on The Breakdown.

“It’s pretty straightforward. He will play this year, whether it’s the 34 [July squad] or the 44 is probably the question.”

Former All Black first-five Stephen Donald agrees with Parsons on Segner’s form, but says it’s a difficult group to squeeze your way into.

“He’s been fantastic, his case is incredible, but let’s not forget, we presume Ardie Savea’s probably going to be the seven, so that’s your starter locked up,” Donald said.

“Then you’ve got five other spots to fill as far as your squad goes. So it’s not going to be easy, Batesy [Steven Bates] touched on it, we’ve got so many quality loose-forwards so he certainly deserves it. But sometimes you know it’s not easy to get in there.”

Current Auckland Bunnings NPC head coach Steven Bates admits that although he’d love Segner to feature for his side this year, the German-born loose forward deserves a crack at the All Blacks.

“I think he will be picked. I think if Rennie talked about the pick-and-gain stuff. If he’s true to his word, there is no better person in the game in his back-in-play stuff than Anton Segner,” Bates told The Breakdown.

“So breaks me a little bit, but I wish the best for Anton because he ticks every box, he’s a good rugby player, he’s a fantastic human, he’s a great leader and he’s got great standards.

“He ticks every single thing you want, and love to have him on our NPC campaign, but I’d love for him wear a Black jersey as well.”

Deserves to be in the 34 on form.

Chiefs needs to switch Naitoa Ah Kuoi with Parker. Put him at 6 and Parker on the bench. Finau needs to string ten games along being outstanding. Not two.

Can’t do that by putting randoms in front of him, the currently All Black 6 makes it hard enough to get game time.

I can see Segner making Rennie’s first squad because he brings a pretty unique skill set. A openside who can also operate effectively in the lineout.

There are still a few unknowns, particularly around Ardie Savea’s role. He played at 7 last season and has been playing 7 with Kobe as well. On the face of it, he’ll probably stay there. But Rennie could be tempted to shift him to No. 8 and move Sititi to blindside flanker.

Finau has definitely been building some momentum lately. He could be a real impact player off the bench.

I’d also keep an eye on S. Tupou Ta’eiloa. He’s got an outstanding work rate. A bit like a 22-year-old Vunipola. He could well be the bolter in the squad.

He’s signed offshore. Only Moana could save him from going I’d say.

It’s not really Segners player that gets you excited (he’s fairly ordinary on the field amongst great players), it’s really his off field persona. He decided to join the Blues over the more structured pathway at the Crusaders. He’s captained the side in his first season as a starter. Is the picture of the professional athlete.

What I also suspect is that he develops and learns really quickly. He probably hasn’t had the rugby background a lot of his peers have and he is making his game fit whats needed as he goes, rather than a guy like Casey who’s had a picture of who he wants to be since a kid. When he first came into the Blues it was as someone who had learned to benefit his school as much as he could, not he’s starting to benefit the Blues by nailing some key areas of play. I really think that if he is kept in one position he could well be that McCaw level game manipulator at the highest level.

His size is also fairly versatile, already a big loosie without looking it. Very interesting prospect.

Bang on the quick learner I reckon JW he has really improved his discipline this season

Even tho I would name him captain I wanna see Ardie off the bench start Wallace at 8 Lakai at 7 and tending towards Finau at 6 which I think a heap of people gonna rip but that’s just for the first test

I think he will be a non Test All Black. Play mid week in SA

Most likely yeah, I would probably rate him about that CLW level though, so could get interesting with some injuries.

The loose forwards DR selects will be interesting. I personally think Segner should be picked and I think that some of the previous automatic selections need to miss out so they wake up and start growing again. For me Jacobson has regressed and while Kirifi is playing OK, I think he needs to step up his intensity a bit.

Kirifi didn’t step up at International level at all. Great SR player, but that’s his ceiling. Same could be said for Jacobson.

Segner deserves a shot, because until players have actually been tried at test level, we’re only speculating.

Could almost argue that Fainga’unuku is better than Kirifi atm.

Agree about the automatic selections, I'm hoping Ardie is not locked on to 7 as he does not have a high enough work rate, so maybe it's back to 8 for him, with a hard worker at 7 and a big unit at 6.
