Worcester Warriors’ fairytale return to English Champ Rugby was completed with a 27-14 final win over Bedford Blues at Goldington Road, but the contest pivoted on a second-half incident involving Bedford flanker Fred Tuilagi.

Worcester lifted the trophy after just their first season back in English club rugby since going bust in 2022, having contentiously been allowed straight into the Championship last year.

In a fast-paced opening, Hugh Bokenham struck first for Worcester on eight minutes before Bedford hit back through Joey Conway, Will Maisey converting.

Bedford’s pack then asserted control, earning a penalty try on 19 minutes to lead 14-5.

Worcester responded before the break, Tim Anstee powering over on 35 minutes with ex-England star Billy Twelvetrees converting, and Will Reed finishing a sharp move at the death of the half to send the visitors in 17-14 ahead.

The third quarter became an arm wrestle, with Alex Day, Fyn Brown and Archie Benson prominent for Bedford, while ex-England back-row Matt Kvesic and James Tyas led Worcester’s defensive effort.

With neither side able to break through, the decisive moment arrived just before the hour.

With Worcester leading 17-14, Tuilagi was yellow-carded for a no-arms tackle on Tyas despite the lock appearing detached from the maul.

From the ensuing pressure, Will Reed released Louis Brown, who surged clear before sending Siva Naulago over under the posts. Bedford protested furiously, convinced Reed’s pass was forward, but the try stood and Twelvetrees converted to stretch the lead to 24-14.

Reduced to 14 men, Bedford struggled to regain a foothold. Worcester’s half-backs Lloyd Williams and Reed controlled territory, while Bokenham and Tyas continued to carry hard. Twelvetrees added a penalty on 70 minutes to extend the advantage to 27-14.

Bedford threatened briefly through Dean Adamson and Tui Uru, but Worcester’s scrambling defence, with Thabo Ndimande and Alfie Garside making key interventions, held firm. Even after Tuilagi’s return, the hosts could not convert late pressure into points.

At the final whistle, Twelvetrees and Kvesic led jubilant celebrations as Worcester sealed a remarkable title in their first season back, while Bedford were left to rue missed chances.
