Hamstring problem rules Lion out of Ireland’s game with Wales

Ireland second-row Iain Henderson has been ruled out of their Guinness Six Nations trip to Wales and skipper Caelan Doris is a major doubt for the Cardiff clash.

Henderson (hamstring) and fellow Ulster lock forward Cormac Izuchukwu (ankle) will both be absent on Saturday as Ireland seek to win the Triple Crown after victories over England and Scotland.

Doris is in a race against time to be fit after sustaining a knee injury against Scotland in Edinburgh.

“Gavin Coombes, John Hodnett, Diarmuid Mangan, Stuart McCloskey, Jacob Stockdale and Nick Timoney have all been added to the squad, with Iain Henderson (hamstring) and Cormac Izuchukwu (ankle) unavailable due to injury,” said an Ireland squad update published on Sunday.

“The Ulster duo will remain with their province to recover and commence their rehabilitation programmes.

“The workloads of Caelan Doris (knee) and Ronan Kelleher (neck) are being managed this week.

“Tadhg Furlong is continuing to make progress and both Mack Hansen and Joe McCarthy are back training with the squad.”

Craig Casey will join the Ireland camp this week in his recovery from injury.

Interim head coach Simon Easterby will name his squad to play Wales on Thursday.

Good to see Hodnett and Coombes added to the squad. The latter has been overlooked too long by Ireland. Hodnett is an emerging talent. Unlikely thpugh he will get a cap this year.

Coombes is lethal from close range. He rarely gets held up. While the overall performance against Scotland was good, the efficiency in the 22 wasn’t.

There may be a lot of chances again this weekend. Ireland need to win first of all, but if that looks on, then they need to score a lot of tries and points to cover any potential loss to France.

From a personal point of view I would have 13 English players in the Lion touring squad*

E.Genge, W.Stuart, J.George, M.Itoje, O.Chessum, B.Curry, T.Curry, CCS, B.Earl, A.Mitchell, F.Smith, T.Freeman, M.Smith

Test starters is another matter altogether and that i suspect that will be far more Green tinted. I also think theres a slim chance AOF makes the plane as a bolter, for that unique ability of playing both sides of the scrum

I think the key here is that degree of danger is part of the high tackle protocols not the diving on a player prone on the floor without the ball protocols. This was a straight red until they started thinking about it like a high tackle.

Still cant begrudge France the title by far the best team this tournament

You could add that Andy Farrell was only a success as a League player - he came into Union far too late in his career to make an impact. Ditto Shaun Edwards in France. Cheika with Argy previously and Eddie with Australia. These are the guys who actually move the game on from waht it was.

I agree, furthermore the grass roots game needs a massive overhaul, schools need to get back to being competitive again. We also need to look at the amount of clubs in the lower tiers, as painful as it might seem we have too many, some fail regularly to field a first 15. The Irish system has less clubs but multiple teams playing on a Saturday, supporters are more concentrated providing greater revenue in the clubhouse. I don’t know how they will improve the regional situation which is generally dire, maybe ditch one?

In some ways, Smith F and Smith M, would be better going to Argentina, where they can develop England strategy and tactics under Borthwick, Wigglesworth and Ford!

The latter will be invaluable to England in a dual role (player/coach) going forward.

Not always in agreement with mr Cleary, but that is a fine, and very fair analysis. It is particularly apposite regarding a Lions’ Tour coinciding with an England one to Argentina. Assuming quite a few England players will be going to Australia, what an ideal oppportunity to blood some youngsters - and others on the fringes. The planets may be alignoing!

Easterby is not the coach for Wales in their current situation.

However, the incompetence of the WRU board in it’s current form makes me worry greatly because I don’t know if they have the nous to make the right appointments for both DoR and Coach.

The restrictions they have placed on both job descriptions severely limits who can or would want to apply for either job. Basically, they are targeting current or previous coaches of international set ups and have shown little interest in getting fresh ideas from someone new.

DoR has to be the first appointment, quickly followed by the coach. They have complete autonomy to select a brand new coaching team and decide how Wales nationally, regionally and semi professionally play the game. There has to be a link and direction agreed by all coaches for a common purpose.

DoR then has to redirect WRU resources i.e. development officers, etc back to schools and grass roots rugby to actively bring interest and participation back to pre-2000 levels.

WRU has to forget about making profits for a few years and go into the red to get things right top to bottom.

Have the Board the desire or the capability to deliver what is needed? I seriously doubt it!!
