Second-half England flex blows All Blacks away in Twickenham

England’s long wait for victory over New Zealand at Allianz Stadium ended after they came from behind to crush New Zealand 33-19 with George Ford taking centre stage.

Ford was the mastermind behind a 10th consecutive victory for Steve Borthwick’s men but there were standout performers across the team, including Alex Mitchell, centres Fraser Dingwall and Ollie Lawrence, and Ben Earl.

It took time for the pre-match favourites to find their stride but upon seizing lead for the first time through Underhill’s 44th-minute try they were always in command, even in the face of an All Blacks uprising.

It was England’s first win over New Zealand at Twickenham since 2012 and their only success against their rivals since the 2019 World Cup.

And the parallels with the 19-7 semi-final rout six years ago were clear after the haka was faced with a U-shape formation resembling the challenge laid down in Yokohama.

There was much to admire about England’s first half but the familiar failing of chances going unconverted was costly, as were their defensive frailties and malfunctioning line-out.

New Zealand, meanwhile, delivered a lesson in the art of finishing in the first quarter, their two visits to the home 22 producing two tries in three minutes.

On both occasions England’s wide defence was exposed with Leicester Fainga’anuku sliding under a tackle to score near the left corner before Codie Taylor darted over after the midfield had been scythed open by a skilfully executed backs move.

An early 12-0 deficit was the harsh reality facing England given they had started brightly with Immanuel Feyi-Waboso lively, Dingwall forcing a gap and Ford producing a huge spiral bomb.

Freddie Steward departed with a head injury to usher Marcus Smith on to the field and the full-back was soon involved as Earl launched a counter-attack that ended with Feyi-Waboso being stopped close to the line.

English ambition was rewarded in the 25th minute when Ollie Lawrence marauded over from a scrum strike move, breaking two tackles before touching down with an outstretched arm.

Sam Underhill carries the ball forward – PA

Two quick drop-goals by Ford made the interval deficit just 12-11 and when Taylor was sin-binned for handling on the floor, England struck by upping the tempo with Sam Underhill executing the decisive carry after Mitchell had almost crossed.

The All Blacks scrum was shoved backwards and Ford had a try ruled out for a knock on as the wins began to pile up for the hosts, with Dingwall’s 55th-minute try confirming the tide had turned.

Dingwall pounced after Lawrence had sucked in two defenders in a line-out move and then on came the bomb squad of Lions forwards to make matters worse for New Zealand.

But they hit back when Jordan swept over after Earl had been sent to the sin-bin and with the game back in the balance, it was England who responded with greater composure as a Ford penalty and Tom Roebuck try sealed a famous win.

I’ve just had a look at some of the stats and there is one that stands out above anything else - tackles made.

For the entire 6 N’s, ENG averaged 130 tackles with an 85% tackle completion. Since doubling down on the 5x7 strategy, ENG have delivered 190 tackles per game vs AUS & NZ with a 91% tackle completion.

That is an enormous change, which is why our defence has improved so much since the summer.

Attack stats last Autumn were worse but the current attack isn’t that much different. We did have slightly better results in the 6N’s but that also included the WAL game, so excluding that they are probably quite similar.

Really pleased with today’s win, I thought it would be a close game, where ENG’s defence would cause issues but had some doubts if our attack would score enough points but the drop goals really helped and kept the scoreboard ticking over.

This was really a victory for the defence, which looked very strong and whilst a few are going overboard, we were very much 2nd place in the attack stats, so room for improvement as we continue to evolve.

Oh dear Razor! Did Dmac not save you?

The coaches are hopeless.

I’m still def glass half full on our ABs some of our young guns have been going really well and outside backs there can be some easy changes for next squad along with midfield forwards are stacked but 10 is up for grabs imo hopefully Super Love for example gets a good go and earns it need a back up or 2 for Cam, Cortez needs form and Christie a stop gap, know everyone getting Gaga on Pledger but he is young any world Fakatava makes it ?

It’s not the players.

Wasn’t all box kicking so I enjoyed that match.

England Rugby World Cup 2023 champions, oh what could have been with a display like this.

Well done Ford, still a match to win. Surprised English scrum was so good, is that improvement or still ABs coming into form? Lucky to have Smith on so early, allowed England to play both ways, good credit for a team vilified for these performances in 2024.

Those two starting props got utterly destroyed by your boys last season when they came on last Autumn, so that is how far they have improved.

Baxter was young, so they have put another 5-10KG on him since and his scrummaging has really improved. Heyes just improved his technique but they have also improved since Jamie George started playing between them and has become a very effective replacement front row unit.

Well played England, highly annoying that the Allblacks coaching staff reselected Proctor to start as a passive centre despite Quinn having been so good, save could be said for the captain.

Totally agree CO.

Let’s be honest CC was a big loss for this game, he was brilliant the last couple of weeks buy why on earth would you break up QT/LF after what they had done the last few weeks?

Some of these selection decisions and the refusal to pick a 6|2 bench with Sititi & Kirifi was a coaching blunder from Razor.

You have the players but what is the coaching team thinking???

I’ve always said that Scott has been the least inspiring AB captain ever, but the blame really lies with the coach, England look a lot more confident and aggressive in a year, the ABs look worse than they did when Razor arrived. Our structures clearly aren’t working.

Sam Underhill. First name on the team sheet. Brilliant.

I typed out a comment expressing doubt that he’s really the first name on the teamsheet, but after double checking it seems he’s started every game he’s been fit for since the conclusion of the RWC. Honestly hard to believe given the other players available in his position.

Will hold my hands up over banging the Fin smith over Ford drum, ford was very good although I still would want fin more often than not, on a more serious note though brilliant by the side a hell of a lot of positives and I thought Dingwall and lawrence in the centres were pretty good today!

Sort of wish we'd get the wings involved that bit more but there's clear improvements from this time last year and that's a big scalp.

Even more positive is furbank back for saints aswell!

Onto the Argentines next week!

I hate to say this but the stats say we were outstanding in defence and 2nd best in attack BT, so maybe your comments aren’t wrong.

If we maintain that level of defence (which is fairly consistent vs AUS stats), whilst adding a more fluid attack, EMG are going to build in a very good team over the next 2 years.

It’s certainly moving in the right direction again but will be a monumental test in Paris during the 6 Nations to see if we can repeat the win and prove we are serious contenders.

Thought BB had a pretty poor game. Surprised Razor didn’t put McKenzie on sooner.

Great win for us though, but a tough game against Argentina still to come.

From 10-14 the ABs were very subdued. Never watched England play the ABs before and been so relaxed about their backs… Jordan not withstanding! The guy is absolutely world class.

Glad in the second half we kept the ball in hand a bit more - possibly forced change when Steward was injured. When Earl, Lawrence, IFW, Roebuck are hitting the line at pace England look dangerous. For 10 mins in the first half the ABs had 95% possession because England kicked it back to them every 2 phases. England have got a good kicking game but we need to give ourselves a chance to go through some phases and create pressure before we go to the boot. Found that balance much better as the game progressed, very good performance. Wasn't a vintage ABs team but England put them under pressure.

Yeah not every test side is going to be defensively focused or skilled, they pulled the trigger nicely when there were opportunities?

H

You’d swear the NZ attack coach has lost interest in his job.

P
PMcD 30 days ago

He’s been pre-occupied with Australia. I’m not sure they ever replaced JS did they??? 😉

J
JW 30 days ago

You’d hope so, at least that would give Razor grounds to fire him and get a more qualified replacement like Tony Brown.

As well as the defence coach
