France name elite group of players to be protected by 9-Test cap

The 33 French internationals who’ll benefit from a new initiative designed to reduce their playing time during the club season, preventing exhaustion and keeping them in peak condition for the upcoming World Cup, have been named.

French outlet Midi Olympique revealed the list on Sunday, but the players and clubs concerned were already aware of the initiative, having been informed in advance by the Fédération Française de Rugby and the Ligue Nationale de Rugby.

The new programme enforces players to rest one weekend for every four-weekend block, or two games in an eight-weekend block, to ensure they aren’t overworked during the season.

At the same time, those involved can’t play more than nine Test matches per season. This means that, in Les Bleus’ current competitive schedule of 11 matches, players such as Matthieu Jalibert and Emmanuel Meafou will need to stand down two matches, whether in the November section of the Nations Championship or in the 2027 Six Nations.

However, France’s coaching staff and clubs could adjust each player’s rest and competition schedule by mutual agreement.

Stade Toulousain is the most represented club on the list with 13 players, followed by Union Bordeaux-Bègles (6), Stade Rochelais, Section Paloise and RC Toulon (3 each), Racing 92 (2), and ASM Clermont, LOU and Montpellier (one each).

Amongst the most notable omissions are UBB’s Maxime Lucu, La Rochelle’s Grégory Alldritt, and Section Paloise’s Hugo Auradou. However, it is important to note that the 33-player list for the new programme was drawn up in the weeks leading up to the Six Nations.

As a result, players who were unavailable at the time, such as veteran scrum-half Lucu, who missed the tournament through injury, may not have been fully accounted for when the selections were made. Therefore, he could still be included in the workload-management programme, with the same scenario applying to Hugo Auradou.

As for Alldritt, the No. 8’s situation differs from the other two, as his absence resulted from Fabien Galthié’s selection dpolicy rather than any injury concerns.

Gaël Fickou and Romain Taofifenua also appear on the official list, yet both last played for France in November 2025, demonstrating that there are room for changes in the months ahead.

Despite some lingering uncertainties about potential additions or removals from the list over the next 12 months, LNR president Yann Roubert clarified that including these 33 players does not guarantee their participation in the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

What is certain is that the FFR and the LNR are committed to working together to give Les Bleus the best possible chance of achieving a historic result at the 2027 World Cup.
