Edinburgh centre Matt Scott has announced his retirement from rugby at the end of the season.

The 40-cap Scotland international has enjoyed a 14-year professional career having made his Edinburgh debut in 2011.

Since then, he has had three stints in the Scottish capital, with spells in England with Gloucester and Leicester Tigers sandwiched in between, winning the Gallagher Premiership with the Tigers in 2022.

The 34-year-old marked his return to Edinburgh at the beginning of this season, and registered his 100th appearance soon after against the Ospreys. That turned out to be his last appearance for the club, and with a back injury ruling him out of the final match of the regular season against Ulster on Friday, it is unlikely he will don the Edinburgh jersey again.

“After 14 unforgettable years, it’s time to hang up the boots,” Scott shared in a statement on social media.

“My overriding emotion is one of gratitude. Rugby is the ultimate team game and to have had the opportunity to be fully immersed in this sport for so long has been such a joy. Playing for my country and representing three amazing clubs in Edinburgh, Gloucester and Leicester Tigers has been beyond anything I could have dreamt of as a young lad from Currie who just loved the sport.

“I’ve played with some of the best in players in the world and some of the best blokes in the world and you guys have made my journey such a joy, so thank you.

“Thanks to my wife, for being my rock throughout my career, experiencing all the highs and lows with me. Thanks to my parents, family and friends for giving me nothing but love and support in everything I have sone. Finally, thanks to all the supporters who had been incredibly kind to me throughout my career.

“As for what’s next, a career as a financial advisor beckons but, for the moment, I’m looking forward to enjoying the last moments with my Edinburgh Rugby team-mates and reminiscing about the good times.”
