Former Harlequins lock George Hammond has signed for Japan Rugby League One outfit Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath ahead of the new season, which begins in December, as reported by RugbyPass.

The former England U20 forward, 25, spent seven years at the Stoop, having come through the Quins academy, making over 50 appearances, but was part of a lengthy exit list at the end of last season.

He will join a Sungoliath side that had a mixed 2024/25 campaign, winning eight of their 18 fixtures. This is despite boasting former All Blacks captain Sam Cane and double World Cup-winning Springbok Cheslin Kolbe.

Sungoliath will get their new campaign underway against Ricoh Black Rams Tokyo in December.

“I’m honoured and excited to join Sungoliath,” Hammond said.

“I can’t wait to give my all for this team and contribute to our success, ultimately being a trophy!?Thank you to all the fans for your support – I’m looking forward to seeing you out there and meeting you! Let’s make this season unforgettable!”

After Hammond’s departure was announced in May, Quins director of rugby Billy Millard said: “There is a strong culture here at Harlequins, which makes the playing and performance staff very tight, so it’s always an emotional time of the season as we confirm the group of players leaving the club.

“I’d like to thank all the players for their commitment to the club. They are a great group of men, and we wish them luck in the next chapter of their lives, both on and off the pitch.

“This season, I’m joining the team of leavers to take up a new challenge. My time at Harlequins has been nothing short of amazing, and I cannot thank the board, staff, players, and supporters enough for creating so many memories and friendships for my family and myself.”

Everyone knows Robertson is not supposed to be doing the coaching

Yeah it’s not actually that I’m against the idea this is not good enough, I just don’t know whos responsible for the appalling selections, whether the game plan will work, whether it hasn’t worked because Razor has had too much input or too little input, and whether were better or worse for the coachs not making it work against themselves.

I think that’s the more common outlook rather than people panicking mate, I think they just want something to happen and that needs an outlet. For instance, yes, we were still far too good for most in even weaker areas like the scrum, but it’s the delay in the coaches seemingly admitting that it’s been dissapoint. How can they not see DURING THE GAME it didn’t go right and say it? What are they scared of? Do they think the estimation of the All Blacks will go down in peoples minds? And of course thats not a problem if it weren’t for the fact they don’t do any better the next game! And then they finally seem to see and things get better. I’ve had endless discussions with Chicken about what’s happening at half time, and the lack of any real change. That problem is momentum is consistent with their being NO progress through the year. The team does not improve. The lineout is improved and is good. The scrum is weak and stays weak. The misfires and stays misfiring. When is the new structure following Lancasters Leinster going to click?
