Ex-England wing Marland Yarde announces retirement
Former England wing Marland Yarde has announced his retirement from rugby after being without a club for two years.
The 33-year-old last played for Bayonne in the Top 14, but left the club at the end of the 2022/23 campaign having joined midway through the season.
After making his London Irish debut as a teenager in 2010, Yarde went on to enjoy stints at Harlequins and Sale Sharks during his career, racking up over 50 Premiership tries.
He made his England debut against Argentina in 2013, and won the last of his 13 caps against the same opponent four years later. He scored eight international tries, including two against the All Blacks during England’s tour of New Zealand in 2014, notably running over Richie McCaw for his finish in Dunedin.
“Now feels like the right time to speak as the past events have undoubtedly been the most challenging period of my life,” Yarde wrote in a statement on social media.
“I’ve faced moments I never imagined, moments that tested my resilience. But as with all storms, there is learning and growth. am happy that everything was proven without doubt and proud that l’ve come through it stronger, clearer, and surrounded by the love and belief of those closest to me.
“It won’t come as a surprise, as haven’t featured on a rugby field since May 2023 that announce have officially retired from rugby. It’s a decision I made with peace, pride, and a deep sense of gratitude. Rugby has given me everything- a sense of purpose, lifelong friendships, and unforgettable memories. I will still remain around the game in a wide capacity as rugby will always hold a special place in my heart.
“As step away from playing, I do so with immense appreciation for everyone who’s been part of my journey. To every coach, physio, medic, analyst, and member of the backroom staff thank you. You are the heartbeat of every club, working tirelessly behind the scenes, ensuring we as players are at our best. Your roles often go unseen, but your impact is immeasurable.
“There are a few individuals want to acknowledge especially. John Flynn the man who saw something in me from the beginning, Without your belief, don’t know if would’ve made it this far. You gave me the foundation to build a career, and owe you so much.
“Neal Hatley, my academy manager & England coach who pushed me to be the best can be and throughout my career was always someone can count on for advice and support. To Nav Sandeep, thank you. You stood by me during the darkest injury period of my career when everything felt uncertain, you brought hope. Your dedication, positivity, and care were instrumental in allowing me to return to the game love.
“To the clubs that shaped me London Irish, Harlequins, Sale Sharks, Aviron Bayonnais and Barbarians RFC- thank you. Each jersey wore carried its own legacy, and wore them all with pride. Together we celebrated highs and endured lows, but the bonds formed and memories created will last a lifetime.
“Representing England was the pinnacle of my career & a childhood dream! Running out at Twickenham in front of 80,000 people while competing against the best teams in the world- that feeling is indescribable. It’s a moment will carry with me forever and a memory never forget.
“To the fans whether you supported me at club level or on the international stage your loyalty… you made every matchday special. You are the Soul of the game, and your passion reminds us why we play.
To every teammate and every opponent -thank you for the battles, the laughs, the camaraderie. You’ve each shaped my journey, and it’s been an honour to share the field with you.
“To my agent for over 10 years, Stuart Peters thank you for guiding me throughout my career and to Laura Slater for always sticking by me and supporting me through thick and thin.
