England asked to table account of Curry-Contepomi tunnel fracas as investigation looms

England must provide their version of events surrounding the tunnel confrontation between Tom Curry and Felipe Contepomi before Six Nations can decide whether to launch an investigation.

Argentina lodged an official complaint on Sunday night after Contepomi, their head coach, claimed he had been shoved and told to “f*** off” by Curry in the aftermath of England’s 27-23 victory at Allianz Stadium.

Contepomi also accused the British and Irish Lions flanker of being a “bully”.

Six Nations oversees the running of the autumn internationals, including its disciplinary processes, and the PA news agency understands that it has requested England’s view of the bust up.

It is hoped that all the information will be collated by Tuesday morning, at which point it can be decided if there are grounds for an inquiry on the basis that the game has been brought into disrepute.

The initial flashpoint was Curry’s late tackle on Juan Cruz Mallia in the 75th minute that forced the full-back to leave the field and Argentina confirmed on Monday that he has suffered an ACL knee injury.

Curry’s challenge was punished with a penalty but not referred to the television match official and the Sale back row has avoided a citing because the offence does not meet the red card threshold.

With Mallia off the field, it meant the Pumas had to close out a desperately tight game with 14 men.

Contepomi left the coach’s box to protest against the tackle and at the final whistle a brawl broke out between the teams that then extended to the flashpoint with Curry.

“Curry, let me say, it is probably part of his nature to bully people. He came into the tunnel and he gave me a little smack. He is 27, strong. I am 48,” Contepomi said.

“I was standing there. He was coming to say ‘hi’ to one of our coaches but we were upset because he was reckless and broke our player’s knee.

“When he came I said ‘mate, you broke his knee’, he said ‘f**k off’ and pushed me. Maybe that’s the way he is. I don’t know him. I’m not happy with the situation.

“After breaking someone’s knee you need to be at least humble enough and respectful to say sorry I did something wrong. But he went the opposite.

“Maybe it’s his way of being a bully. If we want bullies in this game, good on them. I know it’s rugby, but if we don’t look after each other in rugby, it could be dangerous.”

Contepomi added that the tunnel fracas was caught on camera and that England team manager Richard Hill was present. It is understood the RFU is willing to provide the footage if required.

England head coach Steve Borthwick and centre Henry Slade rejected Argentina’s description of Curry as a “bully” with Borthwick insisting he had no knowledge of what took place in the tunnel.

According to his club Toulouse, Juan Cruz Mallia will miss the rest of the season due to Curry’s “late tackle”.

Will this be considered as an unfortunate injury or could Curry be cited for dangerous play?

Toulouse are understandably miffed at losing a key player for the season and when they meet Sale in a European Champions’ Cup pool match it may be diplomatic if Curry were to be unavailable for that game.

They are very quick to defend a player who has previously brought himself, his union and the sport into disrepute.

Previously, despite his public school education, he didn't seem smart enough to realise Afrikaans and English are different languages.

Now it seems he doesn't realise the difference between hitting players on the pitch and hitting coaches in the tunnel.

Better all round once this all gets cleared up.

Heating up now.

Anecdotally, I've heard of parish priests being really decent folk. Pillars of the community. People who met them had great things to say about them.

Sadly it didn't rule out the gangster stuff they got up to behind closed doors.

Perceptions can be so deceiving at times.

If we take Contepomi’s statements at face value Curry was going to “Say Hi” to one of the Argentinian coaches. Contepomi has intervened and initiated contact with Curry in which he has accused him of “Breaking Mallia’s knee” .

Curry has pushed Comtepomi away and used an expletive whilst doing so.

Curry’s on field tackle was viewed and it was decided it did not meet the red card threshold.

Nothing to see here folks . Sir Keir won’t be paying reparations and gifting back the Malvinas just yet.

Well, not this week anyway.

If he shoved Contemponi he is in trouble.

Also…when Fuhrer Farage gets in he will gift East Anglia and NorthUmbria to his boss in Russia!!

I am glad this will be investigated and is not being done by ENG but by the Six Nations Committee, which is part owned by CVC (who organise these Autumn Series games) and have shown a bit more leadership than WR in this matter (who should have called the investigation immediately due to the damage it has done to the image of the game).

I have reserved judgement for what happened because we don’t have a clue except what FC has claimed, so hopefully there will be some transparency and this sorry episode will be dealt with.

Ok tbf regarding the tackle it reminded me of Bismark’s tackle on Carter.

Disagree. Bismark flattened Dan Carter fair and square - its just that Dan was royal game - not allowed to tackle him.

You weren't allowed to tackle Dan Carter!

Yet he complained to the ref like a little girl when facing South Africa? Not sure if it is not in his nature and he avoids conflict or if he was just scared of Bongi. This saga should be fun to watch.

Bongi would turn him inside-out.

Right? You can’t make this stuff up. Seeing how Curry and the English respond to all this when the shoe is on the other foot is gonna be popcorn entertainment stuff
