Oscar Jegou learns his fate after delayed disciplinary hearing

An independent disciplinary committee has found France flanker Oscar Jegou guilty of making ‘reckless contact with the eye(s)’ during Les Bleus’ 50-40 defeat to Scotland last weekend.

Jegou appeared to gouge Scotland hooker Ewan Ashman approaching the hour mark as he tried to disrupt a maul. Although it went unpunished on the field of play by the match officials, the incident was replayed extensively on social media, and during the BBC’s live coverage of the match, and Jegou was later cited.

The disciplinary committee had amended the charge to include the word ‘reckless’, after delaying the hearing by 24 hours, and upheld the citing, finding that the player had committed the relevant act of foul play and that the conduct had warranted a red card.

The disciplinary report concluded: “In applying World Rugby’s sanctioning provisions, the low-end entry point of six weeks was deemed appropriate in light of the fact that (among other reasons) there was no injury caused to the victim.

“In light of mitigating factors (including the player’s good conduct and good disciplinary record), the independent Disciplinary Committee applied a two-week reduction in sanction, thus reducing the final sanction to four weeks. There were no aggravating factors to increase the sanction. The player was reminded of his right of appeal.”

Saturday, 21 March 2026 – La Rochelle v Pau
Saturday, 28 March 2026 – Bayonne v La Rochelle
Saturday, 4 April 2026 – Newcastle v La Rochelle

World Rugby keeps talking a good game about player safety yet rarely walks the walk.

Until they really sanction players that cause them to potentially have a significant impact on their careers then the actions of players that threaten other players career will continue.

In this case no injury.. So if he had been blinded (my wife is an opthalmic nurse and you will be surprised by what inoccous incedents can cause blindness) then it would have been 12 weeks whilst another loses his livelihood. Ridiculous

“Good disciplinary record”

I bet Eben Etzebeth is really happy that this oke got off so lightly. Talk about one rule for the Boks and nobody else.

Utterly ridiculous penalty. I have no sympathy for Etzebeth and thought the sentence he got was short. At least in his case it was during a bit of handbags.

Jegou’s act, however, was a deliberate and cowardly attempt to cause harm to another player’s eyes during a legal play. Not once but twice he targeted Ashman. There are no mitigating factors here. He should have been out for at least a season.

Exactly.

At the very least 12 weeks. Three times longer.

I would love them to explain how the TMO and ref managed to miss that one.

I can’t believe they said nothing when it was so blatantly obvious at the time.

Ref was heard on mic as saying there is a separate process for that incident and to keep the game going. I appreciated that call at the time. May not have been the right decision.

There have been many blatant TMO/FPRO misses this tournament, would love an explanation of all of them to be honest.

Disgracefully short! No mitigation! The so-called disciplinary hearing's findings bring the game into disrepute every bit as much as Jegou's actions!!

Not as long as I thought.

“There were no aggravating factors to increase the sanction. The player was reminded of his right of appeal.”

So going back in for a second or even third crack isn’t aggravating?

And his most likely appeal would have been for a taxi home tout de suite before they had a chance to change their minds and do the job properly!

Just another branch of the firm who are useless and stealing a living

I've no doubt they think they are doing the lord's work and are brilliant at what they do. That's the level of incompetence

No injury, so no meaningful suspension.

We’d have to wait for a player to lose their sight?

They don't even need to make the right decision, just a not terrible one

Can't even get that right
