Bristol turn to Max Clark as stop-gap centre solution

Max Clark has been handed a PREM Rugby lifeline after being snapped up by Bristol Bears on a short-term deal.

Clark has been jobless since being part of the mass clearout of players by Newcastle at the end of last season. But the Bears have now turned to the 30-year-old as their midfield resources are stretched with the start of the new season just around the corner.

The Welsh-born centre arrives at the Bears as cover for the club’s returning internationals during the first block of PREM Rugby Cup fixture.

Benhard Janse van Rensburg, Tom Jordan and Matias Moroni are all unable to play until round one of the Gallagher PREM following their involvement for England, Scotland and Argentina over the summer.

Jack Bates has also picked up a minor injury and exciting Academy prospect Will Moore has returned from England U18s tour to South Africa with a shoulder injury requiring surgery.

Clark brings significant top-flight experience to the Bears, having made more than 100 appearances during a decade at Bath after progressing through the club’s Academy, while he has also donned the colours of the Dragons, Cardiff and Saracens before Newcastle took him up north.

“Max is an experienced, proven player who gives us important cover in the midfield during this first block of PREM Cup fixtures,” said Bears director of rugby Pat Lam.

“With the number of midfield players unavailable for PREM Cup selection, we wanted to add some experienced cover to the group while also ensuring we can manage our squad effectively through this opening period.

“Max is a strong defender and physical ball carrier and brings a lot of experience to the group.

“He’s fitted into the environment really well and we’re looking forward to seeing the impact he can make over the coming weeks.”

Clark added: “I’m very grateful for the opportunity to join the Bears on a short-term deal. I’m looking forward to getting stuck in immediately and adding to this already very tight and talented group.”
